"When it came time to put that degree to use as a professional writer, I quickly realized
that the path was not well marked. The solution was to dive into that new, technologically driven environment while still holding on to those tenets of good writing and good
journalism. The Isaacson School was the place to do that." Justin Patrick

BOOKSHOP: THAT NIGHT BY ALICE MCDERMOTT
NON CR
This class will appeal to readers but focused on writers. Together we will investigate a novel and look at the
craft elements that make it work. How does the dialogue, character, design, and setting contribute to the
novel's success? We will also discuss theme and meaning. Consider this as a heightened book club. Come with
ideas to share and discuss. That Night by Alice McDermott, was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize and a National
Book Award in 1987. The unnamed narrator recounts an incident that tore her idyllic 1960's Long Island
neighborhood apart. "It is high summer, the early 1960's. Sheryl and Rick, two Long Island teenagers, share
an intense, all-consuming love. But Sheryl's widowed mother steps between them, and one moonlit night, Rick
and a gang of hoodlums descend upon her quiet neighborhood. That night, driven by Rick's determination to
reclaim Sheryl, the young men provoke a violent confrontation, and as fathers step forward to protect their turf,
notions of innocence belonging to both sides of the brawl are fractured forever."
