SCIENCE TOGETHER - I
Parents and children make a great team when
they work together to learn and expand discovery
skills. In this class they will make a model rocket
that is capable of flying to an altitude of 300
feet. The cost of the rocket will be minimal - less
than four dollars. The course will discuss the
principles of model rockets: how the different
parts work together; transformation of energy;
air flow; friction; the function of the nose cone;
the rocket body; the fins; and of course the rocket
engine. Concepts from basic math and geometry
will be discussed and applied. Participants will
learn to prepare a rocket for launch and the safety
precautions needed. Each participant will launch
their own rocket at the end of the course. For third
graders and above. Parent or guardian registers,

TEACHING READING IN HEAD START AND PRE-SCHOOL
Students who don’t read well by second grade often find themselves referred to special education. But most
of us don’t know how we learned to read and can be at a loss when young children fail to read. Experts are
not always helpful either. For example, some standards set a goal that beginning students identify and name
letters of the alphabet by the end of the year. Yet the names of letters (“a,” “b,” “c”) are very seldom the sounds
associated with letters when reading. So naming letters and singing the alphabet can even interfere with
learning to read. This workshop will introduce Head Start/Pre-school teachers and paraprofessionals to a way
of reading that fits the abilities of young children and engages them in a fun exploration of associating sounds
with shapes and letters. Participants will be asked to fine tune the approach based on their experience with
young children. (A Certificate of Completion will be available for ongoing state certification purposes.)

Western Colorado is a challenging environment
for gardeners. Cool nights, unpredictable

the more vigorous growing perennials, which can
overwhelm a garden. Tips for ensuring perennials
longevity in the garden will also be discussed.

educational or
career goals, the
CMC Learning

What can I get from going to the Adult Learning Lab?
•
Review math skills you need for work. Employers need to know you are skillful with basic

•
Work toward earning your GED. We teach GED skills in a small group setting and can assist
you in taking GED practice tests. We can also guide you in registering for the test.
•
Improve your English skills. Learn to feel more comfortable with reading, vocabulary, speaking, writing, and workplace communication.
•
Meet your specific career goals. Do you have an area you need to work on that is a challenge
for you in your current job or is preventing you from getting a job? We can help you practice
and improve those skills.
Who can attend the Adult Learning Lab?
Anyone, whether they are age 17 or 70, who wants to improve basic academic skills.
Who teaches the classes?
We’re a little bit like family here. We have a small staff of teachers who have many years of experience helping countless successful students throughout the community. We have a classroom that is
fun to be a part of and we know you’ll feel comfortable here. Plus, our instructors are all certified
by the State of Colorado to teach adults.
When are the summer classes?
You can choose to come to morning or evening classes.
Classes meet: Mondays/Wednesdays from 9-11:50 a.m. in Glenwood Springs, or
Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6-8:50 a.m. in Glenwood Springs.
Registration takes place in class during the weeks of May 11 & 18.

CLEAR YOUR CLUTTER
Clutter creates stagnant energy and may be
holding you back from that promotion, new job

Clearing your clutter can assist you in opening up

The tarot system is connected to Egyptian
mysteries, Hermetic philosophy, the Kabbalah,
alchemy, and other similar systems. Although its
roots are in the occult tradition, interest in the
cards has expanded in the last few decades to
include many different perspectives. What might
be done with tarot cards? The answer lies with
the deep level of memory and consciousness that
affects each of us but generally remains outside
our ordinary awareness. Techniques to explore this
level include psychotherapy, dream interpretation,
visualization and meditation. The tarot may be
considered another tool. Please bring: Tarot System

on the functions of the four chambers of the heart.
Two sessions emphasize writing that the heart

stories it wants to tell, like the life-sustaining role
of the corresponding two chambers that pump life

WITH DR. WILL EVANS
Join this conversation about how to enjoy flowing within the web of life and
living sustainably. Everyone connects through the web of life, fulfilling a role
in keeping the fabric and tissue of Mother Earth healthy. As interconnected
beings, we are potentially capable of directing our flow toward health and
sustainability.

Sustainability Studies
Many people around the world believe fear is the ultimate source of human affliction, and wisdom traditions
actually treat fear as an illness to be cured at all costs. Modern social science research increasingly affirms this
belief about the pernicious effects of fear as antithetical to human well-being. If we are to chart a path toward
a sustainable future, then, we need non-violent methods and skills for cultivating courage, cooperation,
and hope as antidotes to unnecessary fear and despair. This pair of workshops is designed to help students
develop such practices for themselves and for their community through intrapersonal exploration of their own
identities and through cooperative interaction with others. Students can take each workshop individually or
in tandem.
SELF-ESTEEM, BELONGING &
SUSTAINABILITY
Teacher William Evans, MD, will ground this
exploration in human physiological and psychosocial health practices, as well as in wisdom
traditions he has studied during his long career as
a healer, which value cooperation and learning
from mistakes. Turangawaewae is a sacred word
of the Waitaha people of New Zealand, which
roughly means “standing tall in the unique light
of where you belong.” By helping them discover
(or remember) such place-based belonging and
self-awareness, Dr. Evans will equip students with
strategies for facing adversity with dignity, for
sustaining hope in times of crisis, and for honoring
the principles of peace and compassion even in the
midst of conflict and aggression.

STANDING TALL IN THE PRESENCE OF A
BULLY
Teacher Fred Donaldson, Ph.D., will help
students develop methods for countering fear with
love through a non-contest, highly kinesthetic
form of play, developed by Dr. Donaldson over the
past few decades, called Original Play. Using this
method, Dr. Donaldson has repeatedly facilitated
reconciliation among bullies and their victims
in some of the toughest schools in the world. By
practicing Original Play in a workshop setting,
students will learn this unusual and highly
effective method for building trust and cooperation
within their own communities. Students must
register by July 1.

cooperation among street children in Singapore and Brazil, prison inmates in South Africa, gangs in New
York and Los Angeles, and Syrian refugees in Lebanon. (For more information on this concept of play,
