Sugar vs. Sugar-Free For many years the nafirral food community has focused its criticisrn on sugar as tle causeof many problems,includinghyperactivity. (They overlook the fact that the additivesfound in sugary foods are more likely culprits.) This has led to many problems. Parents buy sugar-free products, believingthat they are bener for their children. And now junk food manufacturers are promoting their artificially-sweetened versions as "healthy" altematives. Feingoldcritics frequentlysay: studies have shown that sugar doesnot causehyperactivity, thus the Feingold Program doesn't work. They ignore the fact that the Feingold Program does not cut out susar! Design Growth His hypothesiswas that the addition of dye to the water usedwould causevariations in the growth of the plants and that the differences in their development would be obvious. The materials used were: I package lima bean seeds,20 styrofoamcups, a bag of potting soil (no plant food was used),5 32-ouncepitchersfor water, a packageof syntheticfood colorings(red, yellow, blue, green)from a grocery store, and a scalefor measuring the amountof soil used. The dye-free plants sprouted after about a week, producing sturdy stems. The ones receiving dye sprouted much more quickly, but their stemswere weak and early on, they neededto be supportedwith poles. Someof them wrappedthemselvesaround fte poles, so they had to be unwoundto be measured. The normal stemsgrew to about 25 inchestall. The red and yellow plantsgrew the most (30 and 31 inches),but they were frail and spindly. The green plants grew barely 12 inches,and the blue onesmeasured20 inches. The red plants(1) had long, spindlyvines,but no beans. The yellowones (2) had tragilevineswith smalldeformed pods. The blue stemswere thin (3) and the plant producedlots of leavesbut no beans. Chris put 8 ouncesof potting soil in eachcup and plantedone seedin each, 1/4" down into the soil. He added6 dropsof dye to the water in four of the pitchers,and did not add dye to the water in the fifth one. Initially, each plant was given 1/4 cup of water and coveredwith plastic wrap for the first days, to keepthe moisturein. Chris put the plantsin a sunny locationand rotatedeach of them at the same times eachday so they would all get equal exposureto the sun. He checkedthe soil of eachplant eachday and addedwater when the soil was dry. As the plants grew, he set the cups in a large pan with dry rice, to keepthe cupsfrom tipping over. Eachplant was measuredonce a week, at the same time and samehour. Water The soil in the dye-plantsdried out quickly and neededabouttwice as muchwater as the normalones.
