Pampered Pets Play a Game www.scholastic.com /dynamath FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY Some animals have a furry and fabulous life! P icture this: You travel to England to enjoy surfing lessons, a new wardrobe, and food cooked by a personal chef. This vacation is available through a website called VeryFirstTo.com for $73,000. Here’s the catch: It’s for dogs. Around the world, people are dropping big bucks on everything from a $430,000 doghouse to a $4.2 million tiara for their animal companions. Americans are no exception. Last year, we spent $55.7 billion on our pets. This year, we’re expected to spend $58.5 billion. “As people have made pets a significant part of the family, they’re willing to spend more money on them. They’re treating them in ways that are meaningful, as if they were taking care of a person,” says Bob Vetere. He’s the president of the American Pet Products Association. The rise in pet spending isn’t only because of luxury pet products. Many companies are getting in on the petspending boom by offering everyday goodies. 1 Tiaras and swanky beds, fancy doghouses, and cutesy costumes are just a few ways people dote on their pets. BarkBox, for example, ships packages full of treats and toys to its dog-loving customers once a month. A product called the Whistle activity monitor attaches to a dog’s collar and tracks its location and activity level. And with DogVacay, owners can find a safe place for their dogs to stay while they’re on vacation. It’s no surprise that many pet owners consider the billions spent on their pets to be money well spent. According to Vetere, studies show that pets can help improve our health and emotional well-being. In other words, what pets give back to their owners can be priceless. —Courteney Palis DynaMath • To order, call 1-800-SCHOLASTIC or visit www.scholastic.com/buy-dynamath Rounding C. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning OBJECTIVE Students will assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. LESSON Engagement 1. First, have students read the article. To facilitate discussion, ask students: •Do you have a pet that you pamper? Would you ever buy your pet a $4.3 million dollar tiara? Do you have an opinion on how much is appropriate to spend on a pet? Concept Development 2. Begin building conceptual understanding by asking students to explain what rounding is. •Ask: What does it mean to round a number? Possible answer: Rounding is a way of adjusting numbers so they are simpler and easier to work with. •The number line is a powerful tool for providing conceptual understanding so students know what they’re actually doing when rounding. We can use it to help them see why rounding gives us a particular number at a given place value. •Write the number 348 on the board and tell students that we’re going to round this number using number lines. On the board, draw a number line with an arrow at both ends. Divide the number line into 10 equal parts. •Ask: Which numbers do we place at the ends? Answer: It depends on which place value I am rounding to. •What number goes in the middle of the number line? Discuss with your partner. Answers: half-way point, the middle value, the number between the end numbers •Round this number, 348, to the nearest tens place, hundreds place, and thousands place using 3 different number lines. Have students complete each number line up and then compare with examples below. . Number lines for rounding 348 . . . to the nearest ten 340 to the nearest hundred 348 345 400 350 350 to the nearest thousand 348 348 0 500 1,000 300 Answers: Rounding to the tens: 340, rounding to the hundreds: 300, rounding to the thousands: 0. Application 3. Have students complete problems 1 through 5. You can use a whiteboard to draw the number lines if you prefer. Students can discuss their responses with a partner if time allows. Closure 4. Give students the opportunity to round smaller and larger numbers using a number line. The “Rounding on a Number Line” skills sheet will provide more practice (see below.) A number line is a great tool to see why numbers round up or down, depending on the place value you’re rounding them to. In the problems below, round each amount to the place value specified. Draw a number line to show your thinking. Round the weight of each item to the nearest 10 ounces. 52 ounces 3 Mario rounds 804 to the nearest 10. He says the answer is 810. Explain whether his answer is correct. 4 Round the following capacities to the nearest 100. 386 milliliters 16 ounces 1,312 gallons 127 ounces 2a Francie’s track meet begins at 10:30 and ends at 12:43. How long will the track meet be, in minutes? 523 liters 5 468 2b Circle the numbers that round to 500 when rounded to the nearest hundred. 432 520 591 449 What is this amount rounded to the nearest 10?
