Sung Eucharist
in thanksgiving for the life of
Joseph Patrick Michael Cassidy
11 August 1954 - 28 March 2015
Friday 17 April 2015
10.30 a.m.
Born in Montreal, Joe was deeply
influenced by the love and support of
his parents, Maureen McCarthy and
Linus Cassidy, and the family life they
built for their four children, Joe, Colleen,
Kathy and John. Following his first
degree, Joe spent fourteen years as a
Jesuit priest, continuing his academic
studies while also working in many
different settings, from prisons and
hospitals to universities. He spent three
months in Jamaica and a year in
Nicaragua during the contra war. These
pivotal experiences consolidated the
passion for social justice that continued
throughout his life. After leaving the
Jesuits, he moved to England in 1992 to take a lecturing job in Southampton,
where he met his wife, Gillian. They married in 1993 and their first child,
Emmeline, was born in 1995, followed by Marianne (1996) and Benedict
(2000). Joe was received into the Anglican Church in 1996, and the family
spent a year living in Laverstock, Salisbury, while Joe, continuing to lecture,
also acted as NSM for two parishes. The family moved to Durham when Joe
was appointed Principal of St Chad’s in 1997 and Ben was born in their first
home there, Dun Cow Cottage.
Joe gave generously of his time and energy to many different communities
during his time as Principal, including undergraduates, postgraduates, the
SCR, alumni and staff, but also the University more widely, the Cathedral,
many people in Middleton-in-Teesdale and Crystal Beach, Ontario, and at St
Matthew’s school in South Africa. Despite this prodigious energy and
sociability, he was also a very private and family-oriented man. He was
immensely proud of his children and they never doubted his unconditional
and – to use the word of one friend – besotted love. He loved spending time
with them, skiing, hiking in his beloved Adirondacks or in Teesdale, or
simply watching silly movies on TV. He had a ready sense of humour,
tending sometimes to the unashamedly scatological, to the delight of his
children when small (and when older, too). We love him and can’t imagine
what life will be like without him.

Hymn
The King of love my Shepherd is
The King of love my Shepherd is,
Whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am his
And he is mine for ever.
Where streams of living water flow
My ransomed soul he leadeth,
And where the verdant pastures grow
With food celestial feedeth.
Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
But yet in love he sought me,
And on his shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.
In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
With thee, dear Lord, beside me;
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight;
Thy unction grace bestoweth:
And O what transport of delight
From thy pure chalice floweth!
And so through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise
Within thy house for ever.

Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions, but
think on me in your goodness, O Lord, according to your
steadfast love.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
O keep my soul and deliver me; let me not be put to shame,
for I have put my trust in you.

Isaiah 43. 1 - 3a
read by John Cassidy
But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed
you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by
name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk
through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.

Psalm 121
sung by the choir
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills : from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh even from the Lord : who hath made heaven and
earth.
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved : and he that keepeth thee will
not sleep.
Behold, he that keepeth Israel : shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord himself is thy keeper : the Lord is thy defence upon thy
right hand;
So that the sun shall not burn thee by day : neither the moon by night.
6
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil : yea, it is even he that shall
keep thy soul.
The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in : from this
time forth for evermore.
Reading
1 John 4. 7 - 16
read by Kathy Read and Colleen Green French
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who
loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know
God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God
sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is
love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the
atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also
ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another,
God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us
of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son
as the Saviour of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the
Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love
that God has for us.
God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in
them.

Hymn
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy
Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
Whose trust ever child-like, no cares could destroy,
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
7
Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
Be there at our labours, and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.
Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are those who die in the Lord for
they rest from their labour.
Alleluia.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in
me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so,
would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that
where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place
where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you
are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and
the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you
know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him
and have seen him.’

Hymn
How shall I sing that majesty?
How shall I sing that majesty
Which angels do admire?
Let dust in dust and silence lie;
Sing, sing, ye heavenly choir.
Thousands of thousands stand around
Thy throne, O God most high;
Ten thousand times ten thousand sound
Thy praise; but who am I?
Thy brightness unto them appears,
Whilst I thy footsteps trace;
A sound of God comes to my ears,
But they behold thy face.
They sing because thou art their Sun;
Lord, send a beam on me;
For where heaven is but once begun,
There alleluias be.
Enlighten with faith’s light my heart,
Inflame it with love’s fire;
Then shall I sing and bear a part
With that celestial choir.
I shall, I fear, be dark and cold,
With all my fire and light;
Yet when thou dost accept their gold,
Lord, treasure up my mite.
How great a being, Lord, is thine,
Which doth all beings keep!
Thy knowledge is the only line
To sound so vast a deep.
Thou art a sea without a shore,
A sun without a sphere;
Thy time is now and evermore,
Thy place is everywhere.

Eucharistic Prayer B
President
All
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth,
giver of life, and conqueror of death. By his death on the
cross, your Son Jesus Christ offered the one true sacrifice for
sin, breaking the power of evil and putting death to flight.
Through his resurrection from the dead you have given us
new birth into a living hope, into an inheritance which is
imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.
The joy of
resurrection fills the universe, and so we join with angels and
archangel, with all your faithful people, evermore praising
you and singing:
Choir
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full
of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen.
Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna
in the highest.
President
Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant
that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your
holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body
and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and
gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples,
saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do
this in remembrance of me.
12
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you
thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this
is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and
for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you
drink it, in remembrance of me.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus:
Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life:

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his
perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this
memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our
sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this
bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.
All
Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in
your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so
that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and
glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by
whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,
for ever and ever.

All
Gracious God, we thank you that in your great love you have
fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the body and
blood of your Son Jesus Christ and have given us a foretaste
of your heavenly banquet: grant that this sacrament may be
to us a comfort in affliction and a pledge of our inheritance in
that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow nor
crying, but fullness of joy with all your saints; through Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Heavenly Father, in your Son Jesus Christ you have given
us a true faith and a sure hope. Strengthen this faith and
hope in us all our days, that we may live as those who
believe in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins
and the resurrection to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Hymn
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord:
Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice;
Tender to me the promise of his word;
In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name:
Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
His mercy sure, from age to age the same;
His holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might:
Powers and dominions lay their glory by;
Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,
The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.
16
Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word:
Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
To children's children and for evermore.

View me, Lord
sung by the choir
View me, Lord, a work of thine;
Shall I then lie drowned in night?
Might thy grace in me but shine,
I should seem made all of light.
Cleanse me, Lord, that I may kneel
At thine altar, pure and white;
They that once thy mercies feel,
Gaze no more on earth’s delight.
Worldly joys, like shadows, fade
When the heavenly light appears;
But the covenants thou hast made,
Endless, know nor days, nor years.

Yet thy grace can lift me high.

Joe, our companion in faith and brother in Christ, we entrust
you to God who created you. May you return to the Most
High who formed you from the dust of the earth. May the
angels and saints come to meet you as you go forth from this

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my
understanding, my entire will, all that I have and possess.
You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. All is
yours, dispose of it wholly according to your will. Give me
only your love and your grace; for that is enough for me.
