About the Kellett Fund
The Kellett Fund, established in 1996 following a £5m legacy from Mr Douglas
Kellett, supports projects that enable active ageing.
Who can apply?
Funding is open to community and voluntary sector agencies active in in Tyne &
Wear, Northumberland and Chester-Le-Street.
What sort of projects will the fund support?
Our starting point is the World Health Organisation definition of active ageing which
refers to “continuing participation in social, economic, cultural, spiritual and civic
affairs, not just the ability to be physically active or to participate in the labour force”
(WHO, 2002)
We believe that community and voluntary organisations are crucial to such a
development within communities. They enable older people to play a full role in
community life, both as the beneficiaries and the leaders of community action, and
provide a vehicle for them to ensure their concerns are heard. For many older people
benefitting from a community project provides the first step towards involvement in
running community activities, and perhaps also opportunities to represent their
community.
The Community Foundation Tyne&Wear and Northumberland want to support this
process through the Kellett Fund. As in previous rounds, our two priorities will be to
support projects that:
i.
support the active participation of older people in all aspects of community
affairs,
and/or
ii.
provide leisure and learning activities for older people.
We want Kellett grant making to support a balanced range of projects across these
two priorities. We are particularly interested in supporting projects that deliver
against both, offering older people opportunities to both benefit from and contribute
to service provision. A minimum requirement for all applications will be that projects
should involve older people in their governance, service planning and delivery.
A long standing priority of the Kellett Fund has been to ensure its projects benefit
those in most need. Applicants will be required to demonstrate a proactive approach
to engaging with hard to reach communities, and report on the progress achieved.
The Community Foundation is particularly keen to prioritise applications to the Kellett
Fund that address issues identified through our Vital Signs initiative. Vital Signs
reports are community philanthropy guides which look at the needs and aspirations
of communities, and how philanthropists can make a difference by supporting
community projects that address local priorities. They are published bi-annually by
the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. Copies of the

Our review of the Kellett Fund found that many recipients valued its commitment to
continuation funding. Consequently we will continue to balance the requirement to
provide longer term funding to projects with a good track record of delivery, against
demands for support for new or innovative projects.
Exclusions
Grants will not be awarded to:

individuals;

statutory organisations;

private sector organisations;

social care, health care or housing projects or services previously
funded largely from statutory sources;

fund projects focused primarily on the production of multi-media
materials;

fund trips abroad;

fund buses, mini buses or other community transport schemes (not
including transport costs forming part of a project);

capital projects such as building costs and access adaptations to
buildings.
How much funding is available?
You may apply for up to £30,000 per annum over three years. However grants will
be made for up to 2 years in the first instance, with funding in year 3 restricted to
those projects that have demonstrated significant achievement against Kellett Fund
priorities.
How and when can you apply?
Applications must be made on the online “Kellett Fund 2015: Grant Application
Form”. Applications received in any other format, or those submitted without all the
necessary supporting documentation, cannot be considered.
We are open for applications from 17 March 2015. The closing date is 12 noon on
28 April 2015. Successful projects will be notified in June 2015, and projects must
have commenced by 1 September 2015.
There will be a further round of Kellett Funding in 2016.
