Intel highlights key factors for Thailand to enter Digital Economy
Public-private partnerships to help drive Thailand’s Digital Economy with
technology proficiency
Bangkok, 24 March 2015 – Intel Microelectronics (Thailand) Ltd. partnered The Federation of
Thai Industries (FTI) to host “The Digital Economy Forum” at The Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok. The
forum, which was presided over by Methini Thepmani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of
ICT, and joined by keynote speaker, Mr. John E. Davies, Vice President of Intel Corporation,
saw participation from executives in the public and private sectors. The forum aimed to educate
and stimulate the realization of the Digital Economy through successful case studies that can be
applied to Thailand as well as building up a platform in which ideas are exchanged in order to
drive the Digital Economy.
The Digital Economy policy was built by the Royal Thai Government as a platform to help drive
Thailand’s economic sectors based on five pillars including: 1) Hard Infrastructure; 2) Service
Infrastructure; 3) Soft Infrastructure; 4) Promotion & Innovation; and 5) Society & Knowledge.
John E. Davies, Vice President of Intel Corporation, said, “It is undeniable that technology has
become a vital part of our everyday lives. Consequently, digital literacy is a key factor in driving
a country’s economy, especially for SMEs. As Thailand gears towards a digital economy,
equipping people with technology and improving digital literacy would drive Thailand’s growth
more effectively and help the country reap the full benefits of technology, in addition to
enhanced quality of life.”
Conducting a business in the digital era is similar to what people underwent in The Third
Industrial Revolution where innovation drastically transformed the lives of people. An individual
might not gain the complete experience through the use of technology unless one is adaptable to
its transformation. Businesses are evolving to be more digital and this trend underpins the core of
the Digital Business Transformation that is the SMAC paradigm - Social, Mobile, Analytics, and
Cloud.
As a world leader in computing innovation, Intel is positioned to be an industry leader in
providing knowledge and access to skills development for human resource that will drive
effective digital knowledge, ability and skills among people in Thailand and across the globe.
The company is persistent in building projects to assist people in developing abilities to access
technology comprehensively and wisely.
Intel initiated the Intel® Teach program, a professional development initiative that helps
educators inspire excellence in the classroom. The program enables educators to design their
own teaching plans with clear guidelines and create activities which encourage students to use
computers in research, data collection, communication, and other essential skills for the
21st century. One other program is the Intel® Easy Steps, an education program designed to
provide adult learners who have minimal or no prior computing experience with the opportunity
to improve relevant ICT skills. The program materials use proven adult learning techniques to
teach practical and relevant digital literacy skills through hands-on experiences relevant to their
business and personal lives. The Intel® Teach program is currently deployed in 20 countries
across the globe.
In Thailand, Intel is working in line with local government’s policy to integrate technology into
education. With this in mind, Intel has established the training center to guide the Intel® Teach
program to achieve effective results. For example, the Office of the Basic Education
Commission (OBEC) implemented trainings in education across the country, and as a result,
there are currently more than 150,000 teachers from 76 provinces in Thailand who have
completed this training course. Intel will continue to keep its commitment to drive this project so
educators can reap the full benefits of this program.
The Intel® Easy Steps program has been providing adult learners the opportunity to improve their
social and economic self-sufficiency through digital literacy. The program is designed to teach
participants basic computer skills that are locally relevant and useful, both personally and
professionally. These skills hold the key to drive Thailand into the digital economy more
effectively. Currently, there are more than 1,981 telecenters in Thailand that help people in rural
areas learn ICT skills for their daily lives.
“Through the Digital Economy initiative in Thailand, the government aims to collaborate with
the private sector to develop hard and soft infrastructure, as well as ensuring the availability of
internet access in all villages throughout Thailand. To fully support the policy under the pillar of
digital economy promotion, digital society and digital knowledge, the “digital literacy” scheme
has to be fully implemented. And Intel will continue to keep its commitment to help drive the
digital economy in Thailand to its fullest potential,” said Sattiya Langkhapin, Corporate Affairs
Director, Intel Microelectronics (Thailand).
“We hope this forum will be a driving force in creating a digital learning social, enhancing
learning and technological skills in Thailand – all of which in alignment with the government’s
digital economy policy. Lastly, Intel would like to reaffirm our continuous commitment to
support the policy in order to increase the capacity and capability of Thai people,” Sattiya added.
