Small Point Club,
Phippsburg, Maine
SEPTEMBER 9–12, 2015
Paint with Charlie Shurcliff for three
lovely end-of-summer days at the
historic Small Point Club located on
Cape Small, near Fort Popham and Phippsburg,
Maine. This beautiful location features sweeping

Each morning there will be a demonstration by
Charlie, followed by time for each student to
select and paint the landscape, both in a group
setting or on one’s own. This will be followed by
a break for lunch. Students will then resume
painting for the afternoon. Charlie will offer
individual critiques each day, and group critique
and discussion at the end of the workshop.
Students may paint in any medium such as
watercolor, oil or acrylic. All levels are welcome.

Marjorie Glick
Maris Platais
With a continued emphasis on watercolor foundations, celebrate the spring with a focus on
gardens, flowers and the spring landscape. The
class will include a few sessions of plein air
painting in the garden at Concord Art and also at
nearby locations including the Iris garden at the
North Bridge Visitor Center. A wide range of
techniques will be covered including the basics of
transparency, wet into wet, washes and color
mixing. Learn to demystify the watercolor process
by exploring concepts and strategies that will
allow you to paint with clarity and spontaneity.
Demonstrations and references to contemporary
and traditional watercolor artists are included.
marjorieglick.com
This class will focus on the creative process,
encouraging individual vision and expression.
Unencumbered by external visual overload, you
will be able to compose and design a mood or a
place that appeals to you. Maris will show you
how to recall and design various elements of
nature, from trees and fields, to sky and water.
This imaginative approach will help you develop
an eye for selecting a plein air subject. There will
be ample one-on-one instruction and critique.
You will be able to create a feeling of mood and
place. We will explore brush strokes, textures,
the use of line and mass, and many other techniques to achieve the desired effect. Imagination
allows you to be more spontaneous and fluid
with thoughts and perceptions. We all know
about the “happy accidents,” we will make them
happen!

Dean Nimmer
Charles Shurcliff
This workshop covers several creative off-press
monoprint techniques such as double image
prints, direct plate printing, plexiglass transfers
and other low-tech printing methods that add
depth and richness to your work. This workshop
is a great opportunity to find new and invigorating
ways to add dimension and depth to your artwork.
deannimmer.com
In this workshop, students will learn to see
the landscape as a composition of sunlit and
shadowed areas, as well as how to perceive the
hue and value of each. Charlie will demonstrate
how to simplify visual complexities and zero in
on what really counts. The focus will be on
learning to see as a painter, rather than using
detailed techniques or materials. The class will
convene at Concord Art Association and then
venture to a nearby outside location for the day.
Charlie will start with a demonstration and
discussion, and work supportively with each
artist. The workshop will finish with an informal
group critique and discussion. Please bring a
lunch and appropriate attire and supplies for
working outside in the elements. If inclement
weather should occur, the workshop will paint at
Concord Art.

Gorgeous Impressionism and
Dynamic Expressionism in
Pastel
All Levels

Kim Alemian
Robert Carsten, PSA-mp, IAPS-mc, CPS
This class will explore the process of drawing
from perception into abstraction as an openended activity. We will construct drawings
through additive and subtractive methods such as
layering, scraping and mark making. Through the
experimentation with materials and techniques,
students will question how much information is
needed to describe the motif. The importance of
perceptual drawing will be talked about throughout the class. We will refer to contemporary
master paintings and discuss examples of how
various processes were employed. Subject matter
will include still life and interiors. Class size is
limited to 10.
kcalemian.com
Pastel is well-suited for utilizing these two magnificent styles of painting. Robert will present
and demonstrate distinguishing features and techniques of each with the aim of enhancing drama,
strength, expression and beauty in your pastel
paintings. Working from sketches and photos in
the landscape subject matter of your choice
(Robert will be painting waterfalls, trees, rocks,
mountains and skies), learn to build form by layering strokes with an expanded palette of color
and limited value range. Composition, linear and
atmospheric perspective, practical color theory,
and attention to achieving vibrant, textural surfaces distinguish this workshop by a very popular,
nationally acclaimed instructor, arts writer and
exhibitions juror. This three-day fun and educational workshop will consist of demonstrations,
critique, and painting time.

Alla Prima Plein Air

Painting
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Fresh Ways with Oil and
Acrylic: One-Week Intensive
Emily Passman
Emily Passman
Alla prima is the Italian word for “at one time.”
Adding a sense of immediacy and freshness to
your outdoor painting will be the focus. Students
may use either oil or acrylic. Painting alla prima
allows the artist to spend more energy “seeing”
the landscape and painting the essence of it,
without feeling stuck on the details. We will
work on a series of small color “etudes” (studies)
prior to moving to the canvas. Please bring a
bagged lunch as we will meet and work outside,
weather permitting.
emilypassman.com
Whether you are an experienced or new painter,
a goal is often to loosen up, use larger brushes,
attain more vibrant colors and paint the essence
of your subject. In this class, the focus is to
remain true to what you see, to use it as a reference and then make it your own. Through drawing exercises and “immediate” paint sketches, you
will loosen up and trust your eye.You will create
a painting with a forceful statement through the
organization of the colors, shapes, movement and
values. Emily creates a hardworking yet informal
atmosphere, encourages larger canvases and
assists you in becoming an artist with deeper
expression. The class ends each day with a critique
and informal discussion. Class size is limited to 10.
