Friday January 31, 10:30 am – noon Great Michigan Read Programs Great Michigan Read: Annie’s Ghosts by Steve Luxenberg Join nearly 300 other organizations in this state-wide reading initiative. The 2014 selection is part memoir and part detective story illuminating the author’s discovery that his mother had a sister hidden away in Eloise, a psychiatric institution in Westland. Copies of the book and reading guides will be available at the library. The Great Michigan Read is presented by the Michigan Humanities Council with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities Book Discussion: Dig deeper into the themes of the book: family secrets, immigration, mental illness, and more. OCC History Professor Emeritus Dennis Fiems examines the crazy ways mentally ill people have been diagnosed and treated through world history.
