The Purl Stitch and the Knit Stitch are actually the reverse of each other. The front of the Purl Stitch looks like the back of
the Knit Stitch and the vice versa.

A. Before You Start
Slip the point of the needle

Once you have learnt the Knit
Stitch and Purl Stitch, you
can combine both stitches
and create all sorts of
patterns.For example, one
row of Knit Stitch and one row
of Purl Stitch will create a
“Stocking Stitch”. You will
find your knitting will be
smooth on one side and
bumpy on the other. Or three
rows of Knit Stitch and 3 rows
of Purl Stitch will create a
Ribbing effect. The imagination is unlimited.

C. Remarks
1. There are 4 important skills in knitting: Casting On, Knit Stitch, Purl Stitch and Casting Off.
2. It is much easier for a beginner to knit when there is a more experienced person around. You could ask your parents,
sisters, school teachers, neighbours, or even sales people in yarn shops who are often very helpful.
3. Knitting needles come in various sizes. Usually the thicker the needle, the bigger the stitch will be. You could also
refer to the paper bands on yarn balls, which will indicate the size of needles and materials recommended as well as
colour reference numbers and washing instructions.
4. It is important to have a smooth and even stitch for the first row.
5. To help illustrate the process, some parts of the yarn shall be highlighted in a different colour.
