YOU’RE INVITED!
Have it all in Atlanta
AIA Convention 2015 is one of the largest and most
exciting annual gatherings of architects and design
professionals in the U.S. The people, the ideas, the
environment, the setting—it all comes together for
an experience that will supercharge your year.
That’s the big picture. Now let’s break it down.
The LUs
Get the latest on energy efficiency, learn about
LEED with behind-the-scenes tours of sites that
turn innovation into practice, or immerse yourself
in intensive ADA training. There are nearly 300
opportunities for high-quality, interesting, of-themoment education. We’ve segmented the schedule
so you can easily follow an education track or
choose an area of focus.
The innovations
Get the first look at new materials and technology
from nearly 800 exhibitors. Arrive early for an indepth, hands-on preconvention workshop and pack
your schedule with career-changing seminars. And
get ahead, practically speaking: Register early to get
the sessions you want. Book your hotel early and get
the best choice at a discount. Get to seminars
15 minutes early and you’re guaranteed a seat.
The people
Let’s start with this year’s opening keynote speaker:
President Bill Clinton. He leads an event filled with
visionaries, grassroots champions, change agents,
and rising stars—all giving dynamic presentations,
offering insightful education, and answering your
questions. And you can earn education credit for all
of it—including your talks with exhibitors.
The places
You take space seriously—and so do we. We also
like to have some fun with it. That’s why we’re
turning the Georgia World Congress Center Expo
floor into a temporary built environment with
dynamic visuals, theaters, lounges, and even
an award-winning structure built on the spot.
Outside convention doors, we show you Atlanta,
with insider tours and Design + Dining events that
turn city highlights into a moveable feast. Plus,
Atlanta offers plenty of downtime fun—sports
palaces, exclusive shopping, velvet-rope nightlife,
extraordinary architecture, and quirky picnic-table
dining spots.
The interactions
Students and award winners, preservationists and
data engineers, experts on disaster and art-world
stars—it’s a potent setting where you can shake up
the status quo, start a career change, and discover
new collaborators. We guarantee surprises—and a
memorable and valuable experience.

CITY GUIDE
8 THINGS WE LOVE
NEIGHBORHOOD ROUNDUP
Atlanta has it all—spectacular architecture, trendy
neighborhoods, and plenty to do and see all over
town. Here are some of our favorites.
Downtown
The closest neighborhood to the Georgia World
Congress Center, it also claims attractions
such as the World of Coca-Cola and the Philips
Arena, designed by Arquitectonica and Populous,
featuring America’s first stacked suite stadium
design concept in an arena. Its cluster of high
rises includes landmarks ranging from designs by
Philip Johnson and Marcel Breuer to Atlanta’s own
Flatiron Building.
1. Shackstaurants
There’s nothing else like them. They’re part
restaurant, part shack, and represent some of the
city’s oldest and most celebrated chefs. People
travel miles out of their way to get to Wyatt’s
Country BBQ, in Kirkwood. In Downtown, there’s
the world-famous Varsity, the world’s largest
drive-in restaurant (chili cheese dog, rings, Frosted
Orange). Or look for the several locations of This Is
It! BBQ & Seafood, a favorite local soul food chain.
2. Live music
Musicians ranging from John Mayer, Elton John,
and Outkast feel right at home in Atlanta, and this
says something about venues, audiences, and
variety. Try the Tabernacle, a former Baptist church,
for hip hop and rock; Blind Willies or Northside
Tavern for blues, and the Fox Theater for everything.
3. Craft beer
With nearly 20 local breweries, Atlanta is well
known in the craft beer scene. Try SweetWater,
home to unpasteurized beers available only in
selected Southeast states. Second Self Beer
Company, another terrific local option, was founded
by Georgia tech alums and offers tours and tastes
on the Westside.
4. Patios
This city takes advantage of the fine Southern
climate to drink and dine outdoors. Get back to
nature at the Righteous Room in Sandy Springs,
with an enormous tree growing out of the bar, the
Buckhead Saloon in Buckhead, or Decatur’s No.
246, where you can play ping pong.
Midtown
Skyscrapers and corporate headquarters and
hot restaurants bump up against the Olmsteaddesigned Piedmont Park (check out the Noguchi
Playscape) and the modernist High Museum,
designed by Richard Meier with a 2005 addition
by Renzo Piano, FAIA, and the new Museum of
Design Atlanta. Enjoy a spot of tea? Check out
Mary Mac’s, declared “Atlanta’s Dining Room” by
the Georgia House of Representatives and the city’s
last tearoom from the 1940s.
Buckhead
With its trendy nightlife and restaurants, top designer
stores, luxury condominium complexes, and artisanal
cocktail bars, Buckhead is stunning. It’s also known
as the Beverly Hills of the East, so you might see a
celebrity or two. Cocktail aficionados shouldn’t miss
The Painted Pin, an industrial warehouse-turnedbowling alley that serves boutique cocktails and also
offers bocce and skeeball.
Virginia Highland
It’s an eminently walkable mix of bungalow-lined
streets, cafés and restaurants, and galleries and
boutiques northeast of downtown. At night, you’ll
find casual good times and live music. Try Atlanta’s
best martinis (voted every year since 1989) at
Highland Tap Steak Cellar, which has a classy
1920s speakeasy ambiance and plenty of steak.

presentations, exciting keynote sessions, fast, onpoint chats on the expo floor, and custom tours and
experiences. Follow a focus area or mix and match
from nearly 200 seminars and workshops and 50+
tours to create your own experience.
Preconvention workshops
Join us a day early for a small-group education
experience that lets you earn up to 7.5 LUs. Deep
dives into risk management and disaster planning,
LEEDV.4 materials credits, a mini MBA for
Emerging Professionals, and ADA and FHA—these
are just a few of the reasons to get to Atlanta early.
Graduate students and faculty should check out
course WE400 and other special opportunities for
people in academia also beginning Wednesday.
Education tracks and areas of focus
Three big-picture tracks and six focus areas
make it easy to follow your interests as you plan
your schedule. Focus areas highlight sessions on
trending topics in materials, resilience, and more.
Educational tours
Turn Atlanta into your classroom when you tour
iconic locations like the historic Fox Theatre, the
Sweet Auburn neighborhood, and the underconstruction Atlanta Stadium, brought to you by
host chapter AIA Atlanta. Register early because
these unique experiences typically sell out quickly.
Expo education
Take advantage of continuing education on the expo
floor including sessions hosted in the CE theaters
and learning lounges. Select these sessions during
registration to guarantee your seat.
Plus, Expo Chat is back! Stop by an exhibitor’s
booth during expo hours to discuss the latest
product info, research, materials, or technology.
Complete a learning statement after convention to
earn your LUs and HSWs.
70+ Events
Gatherings range from our largest event, The
Party!, to happy hours on the Expo floor, dinners,
receptions, the Chancellor’s Cup Open doubleheader, and Design + Dining events including a
moveable feast along Atlanta’s Belt Line. We’ve
also curated an exciting selection of non-credit
“fun tours” for your guests (and you, too), including
Atlanta Film Sites and a Civil Rights tour.
Education tracks and focus areas
Three tracks and six focus areas make it easy to
find seminars and workshops in areas of major
interest. Follow a focus area or mix and match
from 200+ seminars and workshops to create your
perfect agenda.
The big picture
We’ve organized all 200+ seminars, workshops,
and expo education sessions into three big-picture
tracks:
Design
How should it look? How does it function? What’s
its purpose? Design track sessions include
establishing a parti, evolving a project, and working
with both new and existing elements.
Practice
How do you streamline a project or keep a firm
flourishing? Sessions in the practice track address
topics including project management, contracts,
risk management, marketing, international projects,
client relations, and business trends.
8
Building Science
What is it made of—and how does it work? Sessions
in the building science track focus on advancing
technology, research, and data in building
design and construction. Topics include efficient
operations, sustainability, and systems integration.
You can browse by track in the online schedule.
Get focused
Six focus areas help you zero in on what’s important
to you. Register for seminars, workshops, and tours
from any area, in any combination.
Materials
We spec materials all the time—and these decisions
affect health, community, and the environment.
These courses look at the latest in the evolving body
of knowledge on materials and their larger impact.
Resilience
Aging infrastructure, disasters, and risk pose
complex challenges—challenges that only increase
with a changing climate. Look here to discover
how architects and designers can lead the way in
creating more resilient and sustainable practices
and innovations.
Energy
Net zero, net positive—getting there is now possible
at all scales and types of buildings. Seminars in this
area help you learn how.
Small Firm Practice
If you’re on your own or would like to be, check
these seminars for guidance, inspiration, and new
ideas in entrepreneurial architecture and design—
risk management, mentoring, employee relations,
and more.
Design and Health
Get a broad view of this booming area, pushing
away from formulaic approaches. Explore how
innovative architects are using design to combat
obesity, build community, and promote well-being.
Design Award Winner
Learn from the winners in this up-to-theminute area. This series of panel discussions
and celebrations examine the challenges and
successes of AIA design awards recipients and offer
networking opportunities with winning firms.

Meet exhibitors, earn LUs
AIA Expo brings together the newest products,
materials, and technologies—and the people who
are experts in using them. With Expo Chat, you can
earn LUs on the spot for talking to these experts as
you browse the expo floor.
No appointments necessary—just meet with any of
the 800+ exhibitors and get their verification codes
before you leave their booths. After convention,
complete a short learning statement form. Four
15-minute chats add up to 1 LU.
You can chat about any topic that interests you, such
as product solutions for your next project or the pros
and cons of a new material. Stop by NCARB’s booth,
and your conversation will earn you LU/HSWs.
Conversations about product promotion, sales, or
marketing are not eligible for LUs.
GETTING YOUR CREDITS
• Earn your first LU by meeting with four exhibitors
for at least 15 minutes each.
• Earn additional credit in .25 increments for each
15-minute exhibitor chat.
• Each attendee can earn up to 6 LUs total over
the three AIA Expo days.
• Take notes as you chat, so you can fill out your
learning statement.
• Collect a verification code from each exhibitor at
the end of your chat.
• Enter your verification codes online—through the
convention app or your attendance record.
• Complete the learning statement by June 1, 2015.
• Check your AIA member transcript to confirm
your LUs. We’ll post credits to your transcript
within 10 business days.
Friday, May 15.............. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Saturday, May 16......... 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
