General Information
Message From Your Board
Board
Welcome to all the new 2015 Members and Volunteers at CSVAC and
thank you to those who continue to renew your memberships each year
because you know the importance of these fees going toward the daily
operations of your centre.
This has been a busy time for the 2015 Board. Aside from supporting the
staff as they go through a staffing change and supporting staff as they book
their vacation and leave time for 2015. Administration Manager, Carol
Turnbull will be on Parental Leave for approximately 3 months later this
year and the BOD is currently brainstorming ideas how to fill this vacancy.
If you wish to know more about Carol’s adoption and parental leave please
feel free to stop in and chat with Carol. Due to the privacy policy Carol
is limited what she can disclose with the adoption information in a mass
publication.
We the Board members participate on at least one Centre Committee and
many of them chair a committee. Past and current members of the board
are currently updating the Centre Policy and Procedure Manual; will be
completed this Fall. We are planning future fundraising initiatives for
example this October our first Shred-A-Thon. Marketing Committee is
coming up with new initiatives to recruit more members and reintroduce
the use of member name tags. The Emergency Preparation Committee,
Director Bev Rhul worked with staff to plan and deliver the first of four
emergency response drills for 2015. Members are welcome to come
observe a monthly Board Meeting but this is for observation only; not
taking questions. Must give advance notice to Carol Turnbull or Eleanor
Ward. We are looking forward to the month of May and meeting more
members.

Volunteers
Volunteer of the Month - Bud Lum
Bud Lum moved to Victoria a year ago and has been volunteering
since day one. He joined the Euchre Group and after a couple of
months took over the Activity Leader role on Tuesday and Friday
afternoon. Bud enjoys being active in the Centre and added
more volunteer time toward the Multi-Cultural Committee and
in February became a new Director on the Board. Recently,
on April 17th he asked to be trained on the Reception desk; it
will be a pleasure walking in to the Centre and being greeted by
Bud’s cheerful and caring personality.
In his pre-Victoria days he was a math teacher, an engineer and was the General Manager for a
non-profit organization. Having experienced mental health problems, Bud says he would like
to be a peer supporter for those who are also dealing with mental health issues. Outside of his
volunteer roles at the Centre, Bud’s hobbies are walking and watching sports of all kinds.
Thank you Bud for all you have given and continue to give to our community.

Did You Know?
Emergency Preparedness Week May 3 to 9, 2015
Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is an annual event that takes place each year during the first full
week of May. This national event is coordinated by Public Safety Canada, in close collaboration with the
provinces and territories and partners.
Personal Preparedness
72 hours--is your family prepared? During an emergency, you and your family could be on your own for an
extended period of time. Emergency services may not be readily available, as increasing demands are placed
on responders. It may take emergency workers some time to get to you as they help those in most critical need.
Basic items you will need to survive for 72 hours:
Water - at least two litres of water per person per day (including small bottles that can be carried easily in case
of an evacuation order)
• Food - that won’t spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food
and water once a year)
• Manual can opener
• Flashlight and batteries
• Candles and matches or lighter (remember to place candles in sturdy containers and to put them out before
going to sleep)
• Battery-powered or wind-up radio (and extra batteries)
• First Aid Kit
• Special items such as prescription medications, infant formula and equipment for people with disabilities
• Extra keys for your car and house
• Some cash in smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travellers cheques are also useful) and change for pay phones
• A copy of your emergency plan including contact information
