The Summit Youth Centre - The Summit Youth Centre provides supervised program activities
that enhance and support individual growth in our youth (ages 12 to 18). ‘Summit’ offers a
healthy activity alternative for youth throughout the year including games, access to computers
and the internet, a youth - operated coffee and snack bar offering healthy food, homework
support, a social meeting place, sporting activities, workshops on requested topics, movie
nights and cooking and nutrition sessions.
Supervision and Leadership is provided both by staff and community volunteers. Youth are also
organized through the Summit to contribute to the community by supporting special events
such as the Cancer Relay for Life, Light-Up at Christmas and Valley Appreciation Day events.
Summit is a safe welcoming place in which positive values and actions are modeled and
encouraged while high risk behaviors are discouraged. It gives the youth of the valley the
support they need to become contributing, healthy and active citizens.
Elementary & High School Hockey Academy - The Hockey Canada Skills Academy operates
within J.A. Laird Elementary and David Thompson Secondary Schools in Invermere, BC. It
provides students with a unique opportunity to combine exercise and education. The focus is
on hockey and fostering hockey skills within each student at their particular skill level. 60% of
the students are non-minor hockey players. The on-ice sessions is one aspect of the fitness
component within the Hockey Academy with Firefighter Fitness Tests, Cardiovascular training
with heart monitors and various Plyometrics workouts rounding out the remainder. In the 2010
- 2011 school year, the programs inaugural year, the school noticed an overall improvement in
the student’s academic achievements.
