Deep Delivery
“I love my job. I drive a submarine!” you think, as you get inside. The little
ship fits only one. But, that is fine by you. To you, sinking in the ocean is
fun. You work for the Remote Transit Company. RTC brings things to tricky
places.
As a sub driver, you take cargo underwater. You see cool things under the
sea. There is also eerie quiet. Yet, it isn’t always fun. You must be careful.
There is danger in the ocean. The giant squid lives here. That’s why your

pay is so good. Not many kids will take the risk. Meeting a sea monster is
scary. RTC has to pay well to keep drivers.
You have not yet seen a squid. But, you have only made a few trips. Each
time, you leave from Seashell Harbor. Then, you drive to Atlantis 12. It is a
building on the ocean floor. People do secret tests there. You hear they
use rare sea animals.
Today, you go slowly down in your sub. As you sink, you are shocked. Not
very far away is a squid. It is black. It is slimy. It looks hungry. And, it is
getting closer. You know its sticky arms will get you soon. You have to act
fast. “You won’t get me. Not today,” you pledge. You tap the computer
screen. It is on your dashboard. You must call RTC Central Command.
In seconds, the face of Mr. Haddock is on the screen. He is your boss. As
he talks, you begin your escape. You are trained to run away. You jerk the
steering wheel to the left. You push up on a lever. It makes you go faster.
That seems to work. It puts space between you and the squid. “This is
Haddock. What’s wrong, Driver 17?”
“Squid. A big one. Tell me how to lose it.”
“Relax,” says Mr. Haddock. “This is the first one you have seen. You don’t
know that it’s big.” You look into your rear-view mirror. The squid is back.
It is chasing you. You are being hunted.
Sweat drips from you. Your heart beats quickly. “I will drop the package.
That will let me go faster.”
“No!” yells Mr. Haddock. “Do that and you’re fired. We can never lose
cargo. In front of you is a red button. It has a picture of a cloud. Press it
when the squid gets close. Don’t do it too soon. It won’t work. But, do it
too late, and well…”
You see the button. You don’t know what it does. Now, you will find out.
When the squid is close, you hit the button.
At first, nothing seems to happen. There are no bombs going off. There
are no harpoons being shot. “Is the button broken?” you ask. But, just
then, you see a brown poof of liquid. It fast fills the water behind you.

“Did you do it?” asks Mr. Haddock. “Did you use the spray?”
“Yeah. Phew. I think it worked. The squid is gone,” you say. You sit back in
your seat. You feel relieved.
“That’s fake squid stink. The kind they squirt when they are scared. It tricks
the squid. It makes the squid want to flee. But, it costs a lot of money. It
only works half the time.”
“Gotcha,” you say. “On to make my delivery.” You tap the screen. That
ends the call. Then, you steer yourself back on track. “After this, I think I
will get a new job,” you say.
