Tunnel & Mud Leads: A strong sign that termites have taken up residence in your home are mud tunnels and mud leads. Tunnels made of mud will be positioned on the outside of house structures (brickwork, walls concrete posts, concrete slabs etc). Most home owners find termites once they have penetrated surfaces for example: in and around architraves and floors boards. This is not uncommon as termites devour wood right until they reach paint. If this is the case in your home, this first step is not to panic the second is to call your pest inspector straight away and not to touch them. Why? If termites are disturbed they will head back to their underground nest and appear somewhere else in your home in the future. If left undisturbed your pest inspector can treat the termites more effectively. Termite infestation found in a Tamworth home. Termites travel through these mud tunnels when it is not easy for them to burrow through an object in search of food and water. Wings: Another indication is wings discarded by termites as a normal part of their behaviour. Sometimes these are found in cobwebs or window sills. Damaged wood: Any wood in the home that sounds empty or is dull when tapped with a screwdriver should be investigated. This is a tedious task and can result in damage to building structures. Look for these muds tunnels on the outside of your house especially on top of brickwork or dense structural material. Swarmers: This is one of the first signs usually noticed by householders, where termites gather in large swarms. This usually occurs near window sills or near indoor light. Swarmers inside the house nearly always indicate an active infestation in the home. The use of Termatrac T3i – Termite Detection Radar is recommended for a complete investigation of your home.
