DEPARTMENT OF COUNSELING
CLINICAL FIELD PLACEMENT LIST
9/2010
[rev. 2/15]
Important Information
This list of potential clinical sites is offered to you as a service of the Clinical Training Program in
the Department of Counseling. This list in no way guarantees a placement at a site or that the
site you are contacting will be available. Please make note of all listed information before
contacting a site.
Some recommendations and suggestions:
❖ Remember: at all times through this process, you are to conduct yourself
professionally. You represent our program and the profession of counseling.
❖ Remember: it is our expectation that you have adequate opportunity to do individual
as well as group counseling; be motivated and dedicated throughout your training to
make this happen.
❖ Site information frequently changes; if site information i.e. contact person, phone #,
email, is different, please notify the clinical coordinator
❖ Some sites listed might be “unavailable” for the semester you are seeking placement.
❖ You can secure placement at a “new” unlisted site. It MUST however meet all the
criteria for an “approved” clinical training site. Therefore, submit your request to the
clinical coordinator prior to signing any agreements.
❖ Have a resume prepared for submission along with an application as might be requested
by some sites
❖ Be prepared to complete a background check, drug test, and submission of your recent
health records as may be required for certain site placements.
❖ Be prepared for any interview by knowing what is expected to fulfill your clinical training
requirements [be familiar with the Clinical Handbook]
❖ Have all necessary documentation ready to be completed once a site is secured
[student clinical contract, site information sheet, site agreement, supervisor contract].
❖ Please make sure to have all clinical documentation filled-out completely [list of
associated activities at site, all signatures, etc]
❖ NOTE: You must acquire Professional Liability Insurance. This insurance must be active
[enforce] throughout the period of your placement at a clinical site.
❖ Do NOT limit yourself by only seeking a clinical placement that matches your future
counseling career goals and is located within a 5 mile radius of the university.

We are usually slower to assign an individual caseload given the severity of needs and
diagnosis of our population which often generates a high degree of anxiety for students, but
they do eventually get connected in order to fulfill the specific hourly requirements of
internship. Fast-paced environment, multiple crisis opportunities, a rotation through
departments (MH, SA, ES) is required. Intern needs to be self-motivated and willing to
approach the treatment team for opportunities as they are expected to help create and seek
out opportunities independently with guidance from supervisor.

This site is a high intensity clinical environment that serves adults and children with MH &
SA diagnosis. We are proud of the quality of services we offer and have the same
expectations of UNCC students. We offer individual, group, and family services along with
specialized services including SA/IOP, intensive in-home, school-based therapy, medical
services, and medication and sample medication programs. Prospective students should be
familiar with the DSM-V or have completed their DSM-V class and have a good
understanding of how to use the DSM-V. While being fully aware that students have a great
deal to learn, working at this center will require self-confidence, maturity, and a willingness
to learn from multiple experienced clinicians while engaged in providing services to a varied
population.

The Wingate University Office of Counseling Services provides a well-rounded placement site as
we serve a variety of presenting client issues. While the majority of the population is traditional
college age, there are also non-traditional students in our graduate programs who are eligible for
services. The majority of services rendered are individual with very little opportunity for group
counseling as students have attempted to offer groups with limited success. However, individual
direct client contact hours are usually plentiful and the generalist nature that is required for
clinicians on a college campus presents a diverse placement experience.
