Joan Derylak’s program - Figure Flattering Quiltwear
7 pm Meeting, Thursday, April 10th
at Grace Lutheran Church
Please note that we are meeting on the SECOND Thursday of the month because the Church is
holding Lenten services on the third Thursday. Let’s hope by postponing our first evening meeting to April
that the worry of snow and ice will be behind us! Our program is a lecture by Joan Derylak on Figure
Flattering Quiltwear. Below is Joan’s description of her business and her lifelong love of sewing.
“Figure Flattering Quiltwear was founded by Joan Derylak, an avid seamstress and quilter. Joan’s late mother
wanted her to major in home economics at college to teach sewing in high school. In the early 70’s this seemed to lack
glamour to Joan, so she majored in math and minored in management science at the State University of New York at
Geneseo, graduating in 1975. She ended up working as an accountant for many years and started her own payroll service in
1992, serving over 100 clients. After selling the payroll service in 1999, she purchased her first brand new sewing machine,
a Bernina. Thinking, “boy this is expensive”, she wanted to make good use of it. So she joined Nimble Thimbles Quilting
Guild in Mauldin, SC with a friend in 2000. She has been quilting ever since. As her children are grown, she and her
husband of 35 years are at the stage to downsize. So her philosophy is “if I can’t eat it, drink it or wear it, I don’t need it.”
Hence making quiltwear developed. Specializing in Bargello jackets, she does everything on a foundation base from the
same jacket pattern. Come and learn how to make quiltwear that truly fits us and is flattering!”

Facebook for WNC Quilters!
Our Facebook page is up. You may link to our FB page by clicking the tab on our website, (the easiest
way!) or by going to Facebook, signing in, and then searching for “wnc quilters.”
I have to say “thank you” to everyone who has discovered our Facebook pages and is making our site
a success! We had 325 “hits” for our announcements regarding our National Quilt Day Challenge Show. If
you have not checked out the site or “liked” us yet, please go to www.Facebook.com and Search for WNC
Quilters Guild. Nancy Rogers, a former member remembered fondly by many of us, has found us and is
enjoying seeing the work and talents of her many friends. Nancy is enjoying life in Massachusetts near her
kids but so misses her friends and our weather! Nancy is a tad snow crazy at this point in time!
Remember, everyone may post to our page and it is a great way for the Areas to let everyone know
what is happening in their groups!
We hope our Facebook presence continues to grow and that it becomes a resource for our quilting
community!

Guild Program Preview…
Our May 15 meeting will be at 10:00 am at Grace
Lutheran Church. Our speaker will be Sandi Blackwell,
(www.stitchedbuy.com), who is an award winning
quilter and author. Sandi will discuss her “Squareagonals®” method of cutting and will show us her trunk
show.
Bridget has begun sign up for our May workshop
on Friday, May 16, from 9-3 at Etowah United
Methodist Church. Sandi Blackwell will be teaching us
to make the Spring Fling Table Topper, which can also
be expanded to a full size quilt. Several people have
already signed up so be sure to get your registration and
check to Bridget as soon as possible!
Sandi is thrilled to share with us that she is now a
Craftsy educator and that her first set of classes will be
released this spring! We are fortunate to have her with
us!
Remember when we used to bring our coffee
mugs to the meetings so that we could save the
guild money and “go green”?
We would like to gently remind members to
bring their mugs and enjoy socializing during the
break and save on expenses, too.
We will supply coffee, tea and condiments and
ask that members bring cookies or other munchies if
it happens to be the month of your birthday. And to
insure that every month is well covered we will have
a calendar for sign-up. When you bring cookies,
please remember to pick up your plate before you
leave.
Remember,
bring your mug!
