and I hold the view that nothing is so complicated

to playing beautiful music, or trying to figure out the costs involved in

some differences from our earlier comprehensive
yearly catalogs. For instance, while there are
price ranges for instruments and bows, prices
on individual products have been removed. There
are still sections relating to instrument families,
bows, accessories, books and sheet music, but
the entire point of The Answer Book is to help you
make informed decisions based on your needs and
budget, not to sell you one particular violin, string,
or shoulder rest.

rental program
Our minimum contract is for only three months (with
a one-time opening fee), after which billing continues
on a monthly basis for as long as you wish. The monthly
rate will not change after the introductory period. You
may change size or grade at any time without loss of
rental credit. There is no restocking or cancellation fee.
100% of the first 18 months’ rent may be applied
towards 65% of the purchase price of any instrument
of your choice (within 60 days of the contract
termination).
We offer an optional protection plan to help cover
accidental damage.
Any instrument you buy from us may be traded in
on generous terms for another instrument of your
choice (of equal or greater value).
A driver’s license number, or passport number, and a
credit card are required.
Shipping of Standard and Premier instruments is
available throughout the United States (we cannot
ship basses).
Tuition Matching:
Rental Credit accumulated may be used for tuition
reimbursement (up to 50%) of any Suzuki conference,
camp or institute nationwide.
PLEASE NOTE: Each individual player in a family may accrue
rental credit once only towards an instrument or bow, even

full-size violin & viola price ranges
The question of price will come up early in the search
process, either when you are making an appointment
to come into our Bethesda store to try out instruments,
or having us select something to send. We have
instruments that span a huge price range. This broad
inventory reflects the wide range of musical needs of all
our customers, as we serve beginners to professional
players.
We believe that the best instrument for any player is not
determined by a particular brand or maker, but rather
the one that sounds and feels the best. This allows for
musical and technical development in a price range
that is manageable. We recognize the importance of
family budgets, and we do our best to account for the
musical needs of the player and the customer’s price
parameters. The following is a general guide to the
types of violins that will fall into some broad and useful
price categories:
$700 - $1600
This range contains primarily instruments originating
in Chinese workshops. From the entry level Halo and
Allegro to the more handcrafted Caprice, Legacy and
Potter Shop instruments, these violins can work well for
a first full-size instrument.
$1750 - $3750
In this, our largest category, we have the first step into
European violins. For warmth as well as projection,
these instruments will well serve an advancing student
who is moving into the standard repertoire. Elsewhere
in this booklet, you will see these under the brands
Zoller, Lutiger, Doetsch, Roman, Seppe and Gerhardt.
$4000 - $6000
This category will begin to see one of a kind and older
instruments. The inventory is always changing, so no
particular names can be identified. Normally, one will
find old German instruments and maybe the entry level
old French violins.

$6000 - $10,000
Here the advanced player will start to see hand-made
violins, often by American luthiers, as well as some of
the better antique French and German instruments. At
any time, our sales staff can describe what we have in
this range.
$10,000 and above
The certified and authenticated master French violins,
as well as the modern Americans and Italians can be
found starting in this price range. These are all unique
instruments, whether new or old, and may very well be
the lifetime violin for the right player. The older “modern”
Italian violins will begin around $25,000 and above.
Remember that this is a rough, yet very useful guide.
When you make an appointment to try instruments, you
will be shown all the violins in your price range; similarly,
if one of our salespersons is selecting something to
send to you, all the available candidates are played
and matched to your sound expectations.
Our salespeople who specialize in violas and cellos
can describe the comparable price catagories for
those instruments.
A further note about violas: Unlike the violin and the
cello, the viola has no universal full-size measurement.
We do not even use the term “full-size” to refer to a
viola played by a fully grown person, as the instruments
can measure anywhere from 15” to 16 ½” and beyond.
Generally, the midpoint is about 16”, a smaller statured
individual might feel more comfortable with a 15 ½”, a
larger than average person might do well with a 16 ½”.
Nevertheless, other measurements, such as the string
length and the thickness of the neck, can be just as
important as the body length.

full-size cello price ranges
Whereas everything stated on the previous page applies to
the cello as well as to the violin and the viola, the prices
for the different sorts of cellos are always higher. Since
every cello is unique in its sound quality, rather than settling
on a particular brand of instrument, it is more rewarding
to determine one’s budget and select the most appealing
instrument in that range. Here is a suggestion of what to
expect when shopping for a cello.
$1,100 - $2,400
Cellos in this range are easily playable and will carry
the student through the first years of learning. These are
Chinese instruments, generally made of Chinese wood.
$2,500 - $6,000
This range of cellos includes both European and the better
Chinese instruments. In general, one can expect a greater
range of tonal quality, as well as a stronger and yet often
warmer projection.
$6,000 - $9,000
In this group will be found better German workshop cellos.
It is also in this range that one begins to encounter older
European cellos, something which is sought after owing
to the beauty and breadth of tone which age often lends
to a cello. While it is occasionally possible to find such a
cello for a lower price, that will usually be a consequence of
the instrument’s condition and reflective of a considerable
amount of repair work in the instrument.
$9,000 - $15,000
New German cellos made with the greatest attention to
detail and using very high quality wood will often be priced
in this range. Given the relative scarcity of undamaged,
older cellos, one can also expect to find such prices on
older central-European cellos which are free of substantial
repairs.
$18,000+
This price range allows you to consider handmade cellos
in very good condition from Italian, French or American
makers. Professional cellos are often priced much higher.

SIZING OF INSTRUMENTS
One of the most eagerly anticipated changes that growing
students look forward to is changing sizes in their instrument.
While the current instrument is regarded as an “old friend,”
the rewards of fuller and more dynamic sound will usually
serve to overcome the feeling of loss associated with giving
up the smaller, more familiar instrument.

With violins, the teaching community falls into two schools
of thought regarding sizing. It is vitally important that you
check with your teacher before making final decisions
about purchasing an instrument.
Before moving on to the two methods of sizing violins for
students, let us review the fractional sizes of violins. A
full size violin measures 14 inches in body length, not
including the “bump” where the neck joins the body. As the
fractions decrease, the body length loses approximately
one inch per fractional size change.
Violin / Viola - Method 1
To find your size:
Place the violin under the chin as though you were ready to
play. Then lay the violin along your fully extended arm (no
bend at the elbow). The top of the scroll should fall even
with the second line below your palm.
By this method teachers can reasonably expect their
students to handle any type of position shift and any level
of difficulty fingering to be within easy reach. This is the
safest approach to sizing because it would be virtually
impossible for the player to be injured or experience
discomfort due to playing with an oversized instrument.
Violin / Viola - Method 2
This method seems to be preferred by the teaching
community. The primary determining factors are
comfort and playability, and there is more flexibility with
determination of sizes.
For sizing by this method, have the student hold the violin
in playing position then wrap the hand over the scroll until
it sits comfortably in the middle of the palm. The student
should be able to bend their elbow at a comfortable 45º
angle. Also note that the bottom corner of the instrument
should not protrude past the end of the shoulder.

Moving to the Next Size
In addition to the information at left, have the player play a
one octave scale on the middle two strings ( D major on the
violin, G major on the viola) using open strings ascending
and the fourth finger descending. On a larger instrument,
the stretch from the first finger down to the fourth should
not cause too much strain.
Cello
While the differences in sizing
standards for violins are fairly
small, for cellos the same “size”
(e.g. 1/4 size) may vary as much
as 1 1/2 inches, depending on
the brand and country of origin.
The size categories descend
from full size by roughly 2 inch
increments by measuring the
body length of the cello (not including the neck button).
To find your size:
Have the student sit on the front of the chair with feet flat
on the floor and thighs parallel to the floor. Extend the
endpin until the shoulder of the cello reaches a point over
the heart when the player is sitting upright, and the cello
fits between their knees at the curve below the bottom
corners.
Finally, when the bow is pulled across the strings all the
way to the tip, it should be comfortable for the player to
keep the stick fully level and parallel with the floor.

Are used instruments less expensive than new ones?
What do I do first?
Again, not necessarily. In the string world we do not use
the term "used." Rather, the older instruments can tend to
be more expensive.
Your best resource is always your teacher. They are the
ones who know your needs best. Perhaps you should start
by renting. Our Rental Dept can help get you started.
Do I need to have an instrument before I meet my
teacher?
In most cases, your teacher will want to help you in the
approval of your instrument, even if you're renting. That's
why we offer a 3-week, 100% money-back satisfaction
guarantee on all our instrument sales and rentals.
Do I really need an appointment to see instruments at
The Potter Violin Company shop?
For instrument sales, it is strongly recommended. Our
appointment policy is designed to keep you from being
frustrated when you visit us. An appointment assures you
the largest number of instruments in your specific category,
as well as a showroom in which to play them.
If I bought my instrument somewhere else, can I still
trade it in at Potter's?
While it is not possible to guarantee the trade value of an
instrument you may have purchased at another shop, it is
possible that some portion of your purchase price may be
applied against an instrument sale at Potter's.
Are new instruments better than used ones?
Not necessarily. Often, instruments that have been played
for several years have a smoother, more desirable sound.
With both new and "previously-owned" instruments,
regular maintenance is a must.
What about online "deals" and flea market fiddles?
While it is certainly possible to find instruments outside
of an established shop, you need to be absolutely certain
that you can get your money back if your teacher doesn't
approve the instrument. Sometimes a "deal" really IS just
too good to be true!
What instrument do you recommend for a player who
expects to be a performance major at a conservatory?
For players who are working toward a career as a performing
violinist, the instrument you and your family should be
considering for admission to an international top-level
college music program will be priced at $10K-$25K, with
the bow costing between $5K-$15K. Viola and cello 25%
higher.
What instrument do you recommend for the player who
expects to be an education major?
The demands for performance qualities become much
more flexible in this case. Many teachers own fabulous
instruments and bows for which they (or their parents) paid
tens of thousands of dollars. However, it is not a prerequisite
for general music educators to have instruments and bows
that have the response characteristics needed to land a
national-level orchestra job. Many of them play on the
same instrument they played in high school, perhaps with
an upgraded bow. These instruments would fall into the
price range between $5000 and $15,000, with the bow
costing $800 to $2,500. An outfit of this level would not
need to be “upgraded” during high school or college. Viola
and cello prices will be 25% higher.
What instrument do you recommend for an advanced
amateur who loves to play music but who plans to earn
a living in a different field?
A decent playing instrument for the serious amateur can
be had for $2,500 to $4,000 and the bow need not cost
much more than $800, although a serious player will be
able to tell the difference and would most likely appreciate
a “step-up” bow in the $1200-$1500 range. Please bear
in mind that any instrument (or silver-mounted bow)
sold by us can be traded up; if your playing needs and
expectations change, you are welcome to call us to have us
help you meet your new demands. Viola and cello prices
will be 25% higher.

Where can I find a good teacher?
My teacher says I need a "horsehair" bow. What's that?
If you or someone you know is interested in violin, viola,
cello or bass lessons, we're here to help! Call one of the
musicians on our staff so that we can help match you
with one of the talented teachers in the community for
private lessons.
Your teacher is referring to the part of the bow that touches
the strings, which should be REAL horsehair. The stick part
of the bow will be either wood, fiberglass, or carbon fiber.
Make sure the hair can be tightened and loosened by
turning the button.
Can I rent a shoulder rest?
A friend told me I should wash my bow hair, is this true?
No. A shoulder rest is considered a personal item that
you will expect to use for many years, even if you change
instruments. Ask your teacher what kind they prefer before
purchasing. Some kinds (Playonair) are non-returnable.
This is not a good idea. The horse-hair follicles naturally
vary in diameter and density. The different hair strands
would dry to different lengths and would not play properly
after being exposed to water, let alone soap.

How frequently should I put rosin on my bow?
Most people don't need to rosin their bows more than
once every playing session (up to 2 hours). Some people
don't rosin more than once a week, even though they play
every day. If you NEED to rosin your bow a lot it's probably
time for fresh horsehair.
How often should I change my strings and bow hair?
The standard is 120 playing hours or every six months
for bow hair and violin and viola strings. Cello strings
last about twice as long. Be sure to get your soundpost
adjustment checked at the same time.
My bow was rehaired earlier this year. Now it won't
tighten. What's wrong?
Most likely, your bowhair has become stretched out during
the warm, humid summer months. Loosen the screw and
push the frog all the way toward the grip. If the hair hangs
below the stick when you hold it level with the hair facing
up, it needs replacing.

Can we take instruments to show my son's or
daughter's teacher?
My son/daughter is no longer playing. Will Potter's buy
back their instrument?
Of course! We expect that your teacher will be intimately
involved in the selection process for your child's instrument.
All sales under $3,000 offer you three weeks to return the
purchase for a full refund. If you would like an additional
instrument to show your teacher, the second may be sent
with you on a free one-week trial. For instrument purchases
over $3,000, you can choose our free one-week trial
contract or our three-week, 100% refundable sale. Due to
shipping costs, we may only be able to offer the trial of
one cello at a time.
We cannot offer to buy back instruments on demand. We
do help to support the "after-market" by guaranteeing
to take any instrument sold by us in trade — even if
you are not the original purchaser! We also have a
consignment program.
If you are planning on trading in the instrument you
previously purchased from us or you intend to apply for
financing, we will need to know this information before we
select instruments.
Do I need an appointment to see instruments at The

For instrument and bow sales, it is strongly recommended.
Our appointment policy is designed to keep you from being

Do you offer financing?
Are there special instructions for shipping instruments
to Potter's?
Yes. Please remember to loosen and remove the strings,
bridge, and tailpiece and wrap them separately and
pack them in another compartment. Use Fedex or UPS
for shipping. If you decide to ship via USPS, make sure
it is insured and you get a tracking number. We are not
responsible for items that are received by us from you

The Halo instrument family is one of the staples in our
entry-level instruments. They are also featured in our
standard rental program. The instruments are handcrafted
and represent an excellent value in playability and sound by
the Eastman Strings Company.
All violin and viola outfits include a lightweight shaped or
oblong case, and an entry-level quality bow. The cello outfits
include a padded bag and an entry-level quality bow.

and give it a fresh start. For the customer that
prefers something with a bit of age we have
instruments that fit this desire.
Generally these European instruments fall into
two categories:
1. Revarnished European instruments with or
without small imperfections.

2. European with original varnish and in very

Tips on selecting
a new stringed instrument bow
In selecting a new bow, we suggest that you
consider the following items to help make
your decision a good one.
• Weight • Wood vs. Carbon FIber
• Flexibility • Investment Value
• Balance
• Response
• Tone
Bows can have a wide range of weights. Middle
ground can be found with these weights:
Violin 58 - 62 grams
Viola 68 - 72 grams
Cello 78 - 82 grams
Flexibility
The degree of bow stiffness can range from very stiff
to very flexible. Most orchestral players prefer stiffer
bows, while most soloists prefer bows with greater
amounts of flexibility. This also explains why many
players own more than one bow.
The strength of your bow can also influence your
decision as much if not more than the actual weight.
While beginners may feel more comfortable with a
heavier bow, as it assures that the bow will travel
on the string without bouncing, the more advanced
player may appreciate a bow with more flexibility for
performing a wider range of bow strokes.
Balance
Balance points on bows determine where your bow
will best perform off-the-bow string acrobatics.
Players and teachers have differing opinions on this
subject - this is where players discuss a bow being
frog heavy or tip heavy. There is not just one right
answer. Comfort should dictate what the player ends
up selecting.
Wood and Carbon Fiber
Pernambuco wood is the material used since the late
18th century for all fine bows - going back to the
great maker Tourte. Lesser and different woods have
also been used over the last couple of centuries but not with the same result. Brazilwood is a type of
wood still used on basic student bows. It does not
have the characteristics needed to be a long lasting
bow for today's performer. Since carbon fiber has the
characteristics needed in today's bows, its use has
encouraged the efforts to save and replenish rare
tropical woods, such as pernanbucco.
Carbon fiber bows can offer a good alternative
for those who play in difficult situations(outdoors,
small pit), and for those who might not feel totally
comfortable with a highly breakable object.

Investment Value
Tips to remember
Handmade bows are the best choice for the
advanced player. There are many fine modern
makers, but if available, antique bows are often the
choice of the finest players and by all those looking
for an investment. These bows come from France,
England, and Germany. French bows are the most
universally admired. Bows from different countries
can have different qualities (silkiness for English
bows, or for faster articulation, French bows, as an
example). The most important aspect of any great
old bow is that it allows the player to add greater
differences in quality of sound and nuance that
cannot be obtained from an average quality modern
bow.
For the Intermediate Player
The choice of mountings used by makers (gold,
silver and nickel silver) were a grading factor used
by makers to show which they considered their best
efforts. For the frogs, tortoise shell, ivory, bone and
ebony figured in the same way. If one is choosing to
purchase an antique bow, a recent certificate from an
established bow expert should accompany the bow.
Expertise has changed drastically in the last 50
years, and a recent opinion is absolutely essential
for any French bow.

You can learn to play any instrument, but in selecting
a bow, you must have a great degree of comfort
immediately. Make sure that the bow sits well on
the string when drawing whole bows. Don't just
test pieces that you know. Try passages that are
uncomfortable for you. Test the bow with the hair
on its side and also flat. Different pieces require
different playing techniques. If you are comfortable
playing after all these tests, then the bow is for you.
For the More Advanced Player
The purchase of a fine bow should allow you to
lighten up the pressure with the right hand giving you
more freedom with the left hand. After purchasing a
fine bow, expect it to be a year or more before you
realize all of the qualities of a great bow. The better
the bow, the more likely it is that it will teach you
how to play.

David Truscott
David Truscott has been
interested in violins since a
very young age, performing
on violin and viola all over
the world. He discovered a
passion for violin making

Stanley Kiernoziak
Initially trained in Poland as a luthier,
Kiernoziak moved to Chicago to work

Tetsuo Matsuda
Born in Akita, Japan in 1945, Matsuda credits a childhood surrounded
by music as the inspiration for his violin skills. After moving to Tokyo,
Matsuda became interested in western classical music, notably violin
music. Soon after, Matsuda began studying violinmaking with a local
maker in Tokyo in order to learn the basics of his profession. In 1977,
Matsuda moved to Italy to fulfill his dream of studying violin making at
the Cremona Violin Making School. In May of 1983, Matsuda moved to
Chicago, IL and worked for the W.H. Lee Company. He currently works out
of his home studio in Barrington, IL. Matsuda has won Silver Medals for
violin and viola at the Stradivari International Violin Makers Competition
in Cremona, and Gold medals for both violin and viola making at the
Violin Society of America International Competition.

Daniel Arlig
Born in Springfield, Missouri, Daniel studied double
bass performance at the New England Conservatory
of Music in Boston. Later he graduated with honors
in String Instrument Repair from Minnesota State
College - SE Technical in Red Wing, Minnesota, under
the direction of Lisbeth Nelson-Butler. He also received a degree in
Violin Making and Restoration from the North Bennet Street School
(NBSS), Boston, Massachusettes where he studied with Kevin Kelly,
David Polstein and Thomas Hummel. After graduating from NBSS, Daniel
returned to Minnesota and apprenticed with John R. Waddle.
In addition to violin making, he continues to perform regularly as a
multi-instrumentalist with several ensembles around the Twin Cities area.
Daniel was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2012 Art of Sound
Violin Making Competition and is a member of The Violin Society of
America.

Nicolas Gilles
Nicolas Gilles was born in 1977 in Montpellier, where he
expressed an interest in music from a very early age. He
pursued diplomas as both a performer and instrument
maker. Upon formal completion of his training, he
opened his own workshop in Montpellier, France.
Gilles has won many awards for his instruments, notably
the gold medal for quartet, gold medal for viola, and
silver medal for cello workmanship in 2004 at the Violin
Society of America International Competition. Currently
his instruments are in high demand.

Frédéric Chaudière
After studying at the international Newark School
of Violin Making in England, Chaudière returned to
Montpellier in 1986 to set up his workshop and make
instruments. In 1989 and 1992, he won first prize
for sound in the Maurice Vieux Viola Competition, and
in 2010, the jury prize and audience award at the
International French Cello Society.
His violins, violas and cellos are played by renowned
soloists around the world, including: Jean Jacques
Kantorow, Ruggiero Ricci, Norbert Brainin of the Amadeus
Quartet, Igor Ozim, Alexander Sitkovetski, Gilles Apap,
Rainer Moog, Young-Chang Cho and many more.
Chaudière is president of AIMM (International Music
Academy of Montpellier), an association whose eminent
professors come to Montpellier each year to give master
classes and concerts during the Radio France Festival.
He was also the scientific expert for the 2008 Stradivari
exhibition being held at the Fabre Museum.

Marco Anedda is based in his own
workshop in Monterchi, Italy — near
Arezzo in Tuscany. He graduated from
the violin making school of Gubbio, then
worked in the Sorgentone & Mecatti
Workshop of Florence. He is a member
of the Tuscan Violin Making Association.

Federico Falaschi
Born in 1974 in Pistrino (Perugia), a
small town in Umbria, Falaschi entered
the world of violin making at the School
of Gubbio led by Warrior Spataffi. He has
participated in several master classes
organized by the “Violin Parma” and
directed by artists like Hans Nebel and Guy
Rabut. He has collaborated with Maestro
Paolo Vettori and the Master of Florence
Lorenzo Frignani of Modena with which he
approached the tradition of violin making
Emilia-Romagna. Falaschi is a member of
the Arts and Crafts Modenese and lecturer
at the Museum of Modena.

a paris journey
by David Basch
Like so many tourists, I relish the idea of
traveling to Paris for its sights and food.
I go as a student of history and gourmand,
but most importantly in search of great old
stringed instruments and bows. In the 18th
century, travel to Paris by the great Italian
violin virtuoso Viotti led to changing the
length and strength of the violin bow.
Paris would become the center of bow
making under F. X. Tourte (1748 - 1835). Brazilian Pernambuco wood became the standard material
from which all great bows would be made. Tourte understood the importance of strength and elasticity
in bow making - qualities which all great bow makers still strive to achieve.
With the peddler Tarisio bringing the great old Italian violins of the 18th century to Paris, Stradivarius
and Guarnerius became known to most of Europe. Great bows were needed to accompany these
instruments. The French luthier and entrepreneur J.B. Vuillaume copied these violins and hired the
best French bow makers to work for him. These French bow makers worked in Paris or Mirecourt and
are now thought to be some of the most prized makers of all time (Peccatte, Voirin, Maire, Simon, and
Henry). The art of bow making has continued to the present time.
The great 20th century bow makers (E.A. Ouchard,
Lamy, Fetique, Thomassin, Vigneron, and Sartory)
are names known to many soloists and orchestral
players. The post Vuillaume School of instrument
making is held in the same high regard. Most high
school players hoping to progress with their studies
and play in competitions use instruments of French
heritage.
What do these instruments and bows offer that
makes owning them such a joy? Put simply: they
are magic in the right hands.
Owning a good instrument and bow precludes the
need to overwork muscles and tendons that can
cause damage to your arms, wrists, and neck.

French bows have a quality to them that lets
the sound come out of the instrument with
less work and more time for the player to
think about the music being performed.
The center of French instruments is the
marvelous 8th arrondissement. One street in
particular, the Rue de Rome, abounds with
instrument shops (luthiers) for the beginner
up to the most advanced professionals. One
shop (Sandrine Raffin) only deals in bows.
For 31 years I have visited Paris in search of
these treasures to bring home to our clients.
Given this long experience in the business,
I have been able to play on just about every
maker of bow and deepened my knowledge
of the special quality found in each maker.
How else can one know what will suit each
client?
I will again go twice this year, with the hope
of finding something magical. The experience
of being in this historical environment adds
to the enjoyment of finding instruments and
bows that refine our quality of life.
David Basch, a
professional violist
in Washington, DC,
started his career in the
instrument business in
1977 with Jack Weaver
and moved to Bethesda
with Bill Weaver in
1981. While playing
overseas in 1991, he helped a friend search
for a step-up viola and this led to articles coauthored with Dan Whitman in Strad magazine
and the publication of One Step Up: A Buyer’s
Guide to Stringed Instruments in 1992.
Mr. Basch continues to work with a full range

stringed instruments is the fact that they can last for
generations provided that they are properly cared for.
While it is not unusual for us to have 100 year old
instruments and bows come through our shop, just being
older doesn’t necessarily mean that an instrument needs
more work or is less able to perform than a recently built
version. When the day comes that your instrument needs
work, whether it be some minor adjustment or a major
restoration, our obligation to you is to provide the services
of the most knowledgeable and dedicated craftspeople
available anywhere and at an affordable price.
Drawing on years of accumulated experience, our staff
will assess your needs and provide you with a variety of
choices regarding solutions to your repair and restoration
issues. Then they will advise you on the best and most
cost-effective course of action based on the requirements
of the player, the quality of the instrument and a
common-sense approach to fulfilling your needs.
All of our work is carefully done “in house” by our
professional luthiers and comes with guarantees
appropriate for the particular service performed.
