Nanotechnology Discovery Academy
Summer Camp for High School Students
Thank you for your interest in the IUPUI Nanotechnology Discovery Summer Camp! This information provides a
program overview.
Program Description:
The camp is open to rising high-school sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. Students will be working with worldrenowned faculty daily at the Integrated Nanotechnology Development Institute (INDI), located in the Engineering and
Technology and Science Buildings (SL and LD, respectively on the campus). This week-long, summer day camp provides
a unique opportunity for high-school students to explore the interdisciplinary field of nanotechnology, which is
becoming an essential part of science, engineering, medicine, and many other disciplines. For more information on the
INDI and the field of nanotechnology, visit the webpage at www.indi.iupui.edu.

Dates and Times:
There are two sessions provided for the summer. Students must select their preferred session. Session dates are:

High-school Students Cohort 1: June 8-12, 2015, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

High-school Students Cohort 2: June 22-26, 2015, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Science and Technology:
In addition to several interdisciplinary fields, students will be working in the specific fields of nanomedicine and
nanoenergy. Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology in medicine, including curing diseases and repairing
damaged tissues such as bone, muscle, and nerve. Nanoenergy is the application of nanotechnology in the energy
sector, including the development of more efficient and cost-effective technologies for energy production.
Key Goals for Nanomedicine
 To develop cure for traditionally incurable diseases, e.g., cancer
 To provide more effective cures with fewer side effects by means of targeted drug-delivery systems
Applications
 Drug Delivery, diagnostic and imaging techniques, cells and organs engineering, medical tools, etc.

Key Goal for Nanoenergy
 To develop innovative energy systems, including renewable-energy products based on solar cells, fuel cells, and
bio cells, etc.
Applications
 Electric cars, smart energy consumption, development of eco-friendly transportation systems, aerospace, and
cost-effective household-energy systems
Resources/Instruments:
Students will be exposed to several different processes and systems, including: cleanroom, lithography, nanoassembly,
micro/nanofluidics, nanoscale measurements, and computational resources.
College Credit:
Students will receive one college credit in the field of engineering (Engineering 195) or science (Physics 140), upon
completion of camp.
Deposit:
A $75.00 deposit (check or money order made payable to Indiana University) is required with submission of the camp
application. The deposit is refundable if the student is not selected. Selected students will be notified of their
acceptance. The remaining $220.00 will be due by May 15, 2015, in the form of check or money order made payable to
Indiana University. Note: Limited need-based scholarships are available for the remaining portion of the fee (see
application form).
Fees:
The fee for the camp is $295.00, and it covers:
 One week of instruction and activities led by IUPUI faculty
 Every student receives a $10.00 non-refundable, daily allowance for lunch at the first-floor Campus Center food
court
 Registration tuition for the included one credit-hour IUPUI course
Drop-off/Pick-up:
Drop-off/Pick-up will be in the Blake Street cul-de-sac , north of the intersection with West North Street (891 West
North Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202). Note: Two of our staff members (Dr. Sudhir Shrestha and Ms. Azadeh Hemati) will
meet students every day at 8:50 a.m. and will guide them to the SL building. For Day One, SL 165 (on campus map
below)) is the scheduled venue for the camp. In case of emergency, or if you cannot locate our staff, please call (317)
274-2877. In the event of inclement weather, you may wait just inside the Blake Street entrance, street level (below the
skywalk), to the North Street Garage (891 West North Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202). Pick-up will be at 5:00 p.m., again
at the north cul-de-sac on Blake Street, where members of our staff will escort the students each day.
Parking:
If you are driving yourself instead of being dropped off, you may park in one of the visitor decks. The closest parking
garages for this day camp, in order of proximity, are: North Street (XC), Sports Complex (XD), and Vermont Street (XB).
