Scenarios
What would you do to improve each situation?
Pigs don’t have sweat glands to help keep them cool. The temperature is very hot
in your barn. What is a sign that your pigs are too hot?
Pigs are too hot when they start panting.
How would you help your pigs cool off?
You can help them cool off by turning on misters and providing them
with plenty of water.
Young pigs need to be kept warm. A new litter was just born. What are some signs
that your pigs are cold?
Little piglets are cold when they shiver and huddle on top of one another.
What would you do to keep the pigs warm?
To keep them warm, provide a mat for them to lay on and a heat lamp
above them.
Pigs need plenty of water each day. How can you make sure that your pigs are
getting enough water?
You can be sure your pigs are getting at least 5 gallons of water per day
by observing your animals. If they fight for water, they are not getting
enough provided.

Euthanasia
Do you have a euthanasia plan?
Yes
What would you do if you thought one
of your pigs needed to be euthanized?
We have a euthanasia plan that
tells us to euthanize a pig with a
captive bolt gun. This is a safe and
humane way to euthanize a pig.
What Observations Tell You
Daily observation is an important assessment that can tell you a lot about your
animals’ health, care and surroundings.
List five things that you can look for during your daily observations:
Observation:
sick/injured pigs
2 working feeders
3 working waterers
4 barn temperature
5 BCS behavior
