Lesson 7
Individual
Advisor’sActivity
Guide
Every person involved in treating animals should know and use proper techniques for
administering medications.
Education Plan
List 3 items that should be in your
education plan for caretakers.
Identify treated animals
2. Keep treatment records
3. Use needles properly
Now write how you will
1.
communicate these items. It can
include how you are going to
communicate concerns and new
policies and review procedures.
I will communicate how to identify treated animals by showing
pictures and actual tools used to identify animals. I will then
demonstrate how to use the tool correctly. To show how to keep
treatment records, I will provide a spreadsheet that includes
date, what administered, pig identification number, amount
administered and withdrawal time. To demonstrate how
to use needles properly, I will bring in different needles and
practice giving shots to a banana.
Caretakers
List the people that are involved in
helping care for your pigs. Be sure to
include there contact information if
they do not live on your farm.

Communication Plan
It is important to communicate daily with the individuals caring for your animals.
This can be done in written form or in some other way. Write your communication
plan below. It should include how to recognize that a pig has been treated or that
there is another problem being observed.
Written communication provided: Jamie-Yesterday I gave the pig with ear notch 12-3 in stall 5 a shot of antibiotics.
This pig will need a withdrawal period of two days. I have put a blue chalk mark on its back to signify that it was given
an antibiotic. All the animals need to be fed normal rations. Please check all animals for signs of sickness. Thanks!
One way to help keep your animals’ care organized is to have a set of tasks for
each caretaker. Write one person’s name below and the tasks that he or she is
responsible for. Make sure that you include the timeframe when these tasks
should be done (i.e., daily, weekly, etc.). An example is provided in the first line.

puncture-resistant container that is clearly labeled as a biohazard waste container. When it is full, it
should be securely closed and sealed.
