KEYNOTE SPEAKER
D
R. EDWARD HOOVER, Professor and former Head of the Department of Microbiology,
Immunology and Pathology, received the prestigious Association of American
Veterinary Medical Colleges’ 2012 Merial-AAVMC Excellence in Research Award on
Aug. 4, at the Merial-NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium hosted by the
College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Hoover has been an innovator in the field of
pathology and the study of infectious diseases such as feline leukemia and
chronic wasting disease. He led the efforts to develop a
vacine to prevent feline leukemia virus infection. The
University has honored his career with the title of
University Distinguished Professor – one of only a
dozen at CSU at any one time.
“He’s really a pioneer,” said Dr. Gregg Dean,
Dr. Hoover’s former student who is now Head of
the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and
Pathology. “He uses cutting-edge technology but
also traditional methods. It’s his ability to blend
those two that allows him to comprehensively
address how we can mitigate a disease within a
population. “It is a real source of pride for the entire
College that someone from our group here at CSU
has been selected as an outstanding contributor in
veterinary medical research.”
Research in the Hoover laboratory led to development of the first successful and most widely used
FeLV vaccine, now used to immunize cats worldwide
against the leukemia-causing virus. In addition to
studying prevention of the disease, Hoover also
examined how to identify at-risk cats
and how the disease is transmitted to
improve understanding of managing
diseases in populations.

Dr. Elizabeth A. Rozanski, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC
G
rowing up outside of Chicago, near the Brookfield Zoo, Dr. ElizabethLiz Rozanski
developed a love for veterinary medicine from age five. As a member of the Foster
Hospital for Small Animals’ Emergency and Critical Care team, she treats animals at
one of the nation’s busiest academic emergency rooms. She is board-certified in both
internal medicine and emergency and critical care.
Dr. Rozanski graduated from the University of Illinois with her DVM degree.
After completing a residency in Philadelphia, she was drawn to Tufts by the position’s combination of research, teaching, and service. She teaches toxicology and
respiratory medicine throughout the four-year Cummings School DVM curriculum,
and lectures in others. I love the students, she says. They are a continued source of
inspiration and enthusiasm.
She has also been involved in student efforts to provide free rabies vaccinations in
low-income housing in the City of Worcester, serves as a faculty mentor for summer
student research projects, has raised funds for the American Heart Association (with
her dog, Brie, named after one of her favorite cases at the Foster Hospital) through
the Central Massachusetts Heart Walk, and lectures often at continuing education
and community events. She is also the past president of the Veterinary Comparative
Respiratory Society.
Dr. Rozanski’s primary research interest is in respiratory function in small animals, and she recently co-authored, with the help of fellow faculty member Dr. John
Rush, A Color Handbook of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine
(Manson, 2007). She lives near the school’s Grafton campus with, as she notes, a menagerie of pets—all rescues.

Dr. Thomas J. Divers, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC
D
R. THOMAS J. DIVERS EARNED HIS DVM from the University of Georgia and
completed an internship in large animal medicine at the University of California
at Davis. Dr. Divers returned to the University of Georgia for his residency in Large
Animal Internal Medicine and ambulatory practice and worked for 2 years as an
assistant professor in the medicine/ambulatory practice at the college. Dr. Divers
then moved to the University of Pennsylvania for 10 years where he was a professor
of Large Animal Medicine and served as chief of the medicine section at New Bolton
Center. Currently, Dr. Divers is Professor of Medicine and Co-Chief of the Section of
Large Animal Medicine at Cornell University. He has been the recipient of distinguished teaching awards at three universities, received both the AAEP and ACVECC
educator of the year award and most recently received the Cornell hospital distinguished service award for 2014. He is co-author of three textbooks, numerous book
chapters and more than 180 scientific articles. Dr. Divers’ research interests include
equine neurological diseases including motor neuron disease, equine lyme disease,
equine leptospirosis, other infectious equine diseases, diseases of the equine liver
including viral hepatitis, diseases of the urinary system ,equine coagulation, and advances in internal medicine and critical care for horses, foals and dairy cattle.

Dr. Sheila M. McGuirk, DVM, PhD, DACVIM
W
ith a BS degree from Cornell University, Dr. Sheila McGuirk obtained her DVM
degree from the University of Georgia, did a large animal medicine internship
at Ontario Veterinary College, followed by a residency in food animal medicine and
surgery, MS in Clinical Sciences and a PhD in Physiology & Pharmacology from Ohio
State University. Dr. McGuirk became board certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1982. She joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin
School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983, where she currently has joint appointments in
the sections of large animal internal and food animal production medicine.
Her clinical and teaching interests are focused on the integration of individual
animal diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative strategies into herd-based problem
solving, protocol development, training and management to improve welfare and productivity. Her field based research and clinical trials are focused on the development
of tools and protocols that improve health, welfare and productivity on dairy farms. Dr.
McGuirk’s goal is to engage veterinarians and producers in strategies that result in
early, accurate disease detection and effective treatment.
Dr. McGuirk has been awarded the Norden Outstanding Teacher of the Year twice,
received the AABP Award of Excellence in 1998, was World Dairy Expo, Friend of Expo
Person of the Year in 1998, and was Wisconsin VMA Practitioner of the Year in 2000.
She was a member of 2004 Tour of Hope bicycling team that rode from Los Angeles to
Washington, DC to promote the need for adult participation in cancer-related clinical
research trials. She was named Kansas State University’s “Legend in Academic Medicine” in 2010 and was named World Dairy Expo’s Industry Person of the Year in 2012.
