UC Travel Interest Group While serving on the Board of the Council of University of California Retiree Associations (CUCRA) during its early days of formation, the campus/laboratory representatives would share their Retirement Association's activities at the semi-annual meetings. Over time, they expressed interest in experiencing travel opportunities with other retirees beyond local destinations. I took this thought and decided to investigate what other Universities offered their retirees. Unfortunately, I discovered that, of those I contacted, only their Alumnae Rosemary Norling Associations offered travel programs as their fundraisers. After obtaining UC guidelines, a cruise trip through the Panama Canal was offered in September 1999 and 154 retirees throughout the UC system participated in the adventure. This reinforced the idea that the UC retirement community wanted to continue their camaraderie and share travel experiences. Since the commission received from the Travel Program was generated by all UC retirees, it was decided that CUCRA should be the beneficiary to help support their mission and be able to send a representative to the biennial AROHE conference. To date, the Travel Program has provided approximately $51,000 additional financial support, over and above the annual campus/laboratory dues. This has enabled CUCRA to maintain low dues and to implement additional opportunities in three ways: (1) subsidizing the cost of hosting CUCRA meetings; (2) a CUCRA Grant program to assist member associations with one-time projects and activities that were beyond normal operational costs; and (3) funding the expenses of a second representative (from locations without professionally staffed centers) to attend AROHE meetings. CUCRA Chair, Lee Duffus, recently noted "There is no question that the Travel Program income is not only subsidizing CUCRA's operational budget; it is also being put to good use for retirees and retiree associations throughout the system, thereby strengthening the entire organization and its effectiveness in serving retirees." When considering your travel destinations, show your support and continue your UC camaraderie by considering one of the trips being offered on the CUCRA website and click on "Resources" for the latest tours being offered. We have a wonderful speaker for our dinner meeting on April 29. Todd Coleman, PhD, is rapidly emerging as a rock star in bioengineering. Welcome to San Diego and UCSD. It is an honor and a privilege to host the CUCRA & CUCEA meetings. I would like to invite all of our CUCRA and CUCEA guests to join me at the pre-dinner reception hosted by the UCSD Retirement Association at the Retirement Resource Center (RRC) on Wednesday, April 29 at 5:30 p.m. The RRC is the center-of-campus home of the UCSD Retirement Association and is the venue of many of our events and activities. In Washington Monthly’s annual college rankings measuring universities’ contributions to the public good, the University of California, San Diego has been rated the No. 1 college in the nation for the fifth consecutive year. The rankings are based on three categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.,) and service (encouraging students to give back to their country). UCSD is built on top of two former military bases, Camp Matthews (a Marine Corps rifle range) and Camp Callan (a WWII anti-aircraft training base). A few of the buildings on campus (notably, the UCSD Retirement Resource Center) are from that era. Sustainability is part of UC San Diego’s institutional DNA. More than 30 campus structures are equipped with solar panels and more than a dozen buildings are LEED certified; wireless sensors are situated across campus to determine the best time to gain and expend energy; and more than half of the campus community utilizes alternative transportation. Walking tour to visit Fallen Star. (Activity level: moderate) This group will walk to the Fallen Star from the RRC, which is about a ten minute walk, at a moderate pace. Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star is the 18th permanent sculpture commissioned by UCSD’s Stuart Collection. It reflects Suh’s on-going exploration of themes around the idea of home, cultural displacement, the perception of our surroundings, and how one constructs a memory of a space. His own feelings of displacement when he arrived in the U.S. from Seoul, Korea in 1991 to study led him to measure spaces in order to establish relationships with his new surroundings. He had to physically and mentally readjust. 2. Bus tour of UC San Diego's Major Recent Architectural Developments (Activity level: low) Take a one-hour bus ride around campus to see some of UCSD's major new developments. Starting from the UCSD Retirement Resource Center at 4:30 PM, you'll be given a one-hour grand tour of some of the newest, sleekest additions to UC San Diego's upper campus. A delicious menu and fascinating presentation by UC San Diego Associate Professor of Engineering, Todd Coleman, awaits you. Professor Coleman was just named by San Diego Magazine as "One of 50 People to Watch". Here is a great opportunity to hear what all the buzz is about, and learn about his cutting edge research in wearable bioinformatics. Spouses are welcome to attend the dinner. Per person price is $60, which includes dinner, coffee, tea, tax and tip. Bar orders are no-host & extra. Professor Todd Coleman’s research is multi-disciplinary at its core. His main goal is to use tools from information theory, neuroscience, machine learning and bioelectronics to understand – and control – interacting systems with biological and computer parts. His research in developing multi-functional, flexible bio-electronics are enabling wireless health applications that are minimally observable to the user. His brain-machine interface research uses information theory, control theory and neuroscience to interpret – and design – systems from the viewpoint of multiple agents cooperating to achieve a common goal. The benefits of this research include helping subjects with disabilities as well as enabling all members of society to enhance capabilities in many daily activities. His research on causal inference uses information theory and machine learning to understand causal relationships in time series of data. Within the context of neuroscience, it is being used to understand dynamical aspects of brain function. The approach is applicable to arbitrary modalities and to a variety of applications, including financial networks, social networks and network security.
