Current Cross-Support Activity - 1

JPL/ESA are conducting radio source catalog measurements with Malargue and
NASA/DSN stations





JPL 810-005 Quasar Catalog is updated ~ 2 years



X-band Catalog was updated in 2014
Ka-band Catalog to be delivered in 2015 (?)
JPL has negotiated a generic (not mission specific) Cross Support
Agreement (CSA) with ESA



At JPL, this work is managed by Radio Source Catalog Group
Frequency band is Ka (would like X/Ka)
Provides unique southern hemisphere coverage for catalog
Good Results; Ka Catalog will soon replace S/X Catalog
A similar agreement is being discussed with JAXA
A similar agreement to be discussed with ISRO
JPL InSight mission to Mars in 2016 has a low southern declination
trajectory

Only visible from one DSN baseline for ∆DOR
•



Flight Path Angle depends on the orthogonal direction
NASA is requesting cross-support from both ESA and JAXA
ESA had agreed to support under CSA; IAD in signature cycle
NASA/JAXA nearing agreement on LOA



Measurements made of MOM at S-band from Mars’ orbit
X-band quasar measurements are being planned to verify station coordinates
Alternate between Canberra/IDSN and IDSN/Madrid baselines
 DDOR receiver at Bangalore provided by Zodiac Data Systems




One of Cortex product line of receivers
The receiver output is compatible with RDEF spec
Preliminary results indicate good performance

DDOR proficiency passes are in progress with ESA and JAXA to
prepare for InSight cross-support
 Four of Five Maven passes completed with JAXA in 2014



Correlation results are good
Residuals from Navigation Reconstruction show
•
•
Bias on 2014-081 (due to Usuda sampling with real instead of I/Q)
2 nrad data accuracy (same as DSN-DSN) for 2014-152, -180, -194
Mixed baseline Hayabusa-2 passes in 2014-2015 will also be
evaluated
 Three of Six Maven passes completed with ESA in 2014




Preliminary results are good
Final results waiting for exchange of full data files
Three ESA-baseline MRO passes are scheduled in 2015

Service Management for Mixed-Baselines at JPL

Current format of CCSDS Service Request in draft MB is adequate



For operational support, it would be preferred to agree to
common names and document in an ICD





Some manual editing is required for use in DSN
Creating Service Request by hand has been error prone
Spacecraft
Quasars
Stations
CCSDS and Agencies are now standardizing interfaces for
TTC (Tracking, Telemetry, Command)
Format and editing of the DDOR Service Request may
continue to be problematic since DDOR has unique needs not
in common with TTC

Correlator Status at JPL

RDEF conversion software is routinely supporting mixed baseline
passes with JAXA and ISRO


JPL continues to use VSR format internally
INFO and OBS files control conversion between VSR and RDEF
•



Recent experience has helped identify naming conventions for spacecraft, quasars, stations,
receivers, channels
Can support carrier-aiding using a fixed frequency down converter
More analysis needed on how to handle fractional frequency LO
Designated Servers have been setup in the DSN to allow for
exchange (push/pull) of raw data files

Routinely being used for exchange with ISRO and JAXA
•
•
Data transfer rate with ISRO is 1.4 Mbits/sec
Data transfer rate with JAXA of 30-60 Mbits/sec has been seen


More testing needed to verify this rate
Setup for exchange with ESA not yet complete

Status of Hayabusa-2 DDOR for Precise OD Period





5 of 5 passes completed on Goldstone-Canberra baseline

Good results for each pass
4 of 5 passes completed on Canberra-Usuda baseline

Data for two passes transferred to JPL with good results

Two more passes waiting for file conversion and transfer
Based on internal consistency and formal errors, data quality for Goldstone-Canberra
baseline and Canberra-Usuda baseline are comparable
Absolute DDOR accuracy and validity of media calibrations is best determined by
post-fit navigation residuals

Adequate data obtained during precise OD period to establish ‘truth’

Pre Earth fly-by will provide another opportunity for validation

Maven data in 2014 indicate high quality for Usuda media cals by DSN
Correlation processing residuals are shown on next four charts for

Status of PROCYON DDOR for Precise OD Period



4 of 5 passes completed on Goldstone-Canberra baseline
3 of 5 passes completed on Canberra-Usuda baseline

Data for two passes transferred to JPL

One more pass waiting for file conversion and transfer
JPL correlation software needed to be improved

PLL would not track due to low per sample SNR
•

Frequency correction algorithm needed to be improved since all tones sweep
together
•

A lot of manual processing steps are needed at this time
Processing of 8 MHz channels is very slow
•

More work is necessary on this; preliminary results are inconsistent
Sweeping tone is difficult to detect in FFT
•

Pre-averaging inside PLL loop has been implemented
We better think about what to ask for from RF&Mod (Transponder Developers)
Correlation processing residuals are shown on next four charts for
