World Water Day 2015: NETLAKE – CYANOCOST Joint Press Release World Water Day is marked on 22 March, as designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. In 2015, the theme for World Water Day is “Water and Sustainable Development”, recognizing that “Water is at the core of sustainable development. Water resources, and the range of services they provide, underpin poverty reduction, economic growth and environmental sustainability. From food and energy security to human and environmental health, water contributes to improvements in social well-being and inclusive growth, affecting the livelihoods of billions.” NETLAKE (Networking Lake Observatories in Europe) is an EU COST Action (ES 1201) that aims to build a network of sites and individuals to support the development and deployment of sensor-based systems in lakes and reservoirs, and promote their use to address both current and future water quality issues in Europe. CYANOCOST (Cyanobacterial blooms and toxins in water resources: Occurrence, impacts and management) is COST Action ES 1105 working on solutions to the worldwide issue of water quality and ecosystem degradation from toxic cyanobacterial (blue-green algal) blooms. NETLAKE and CYANOCOST are wide networks that jointly involve more than 35 countries across Europe with neighbouring countries, and about 300 experts, researchers, end-users and stakeholders. The two Actions interact and collaborate by organizing common activities in order to create the necessary synergies towards the protection of European freshwater resources. NETLAKE and CYANOCOST support World Water Day 2015, will promote its aims and themes and will disseminate the United Nations World Water Development Report 2015 “Water for a Sustainable World” that will be launched at the official celebration of the World Water Day, on March 22.
