MONTH OF MAY The months are speeding by us at such an incredible pace, it’s hard to keep up with all the happenings here at The Cypress and on Hilton Head Island. May is no exception. The first week of May brings us to our annual Kentucky Derby Party. This is when you make your way to The Cypress Hall to bet on your favorite horses, and women (and some men) don their favorite hats and vie for the best of the best! Don’t forget about Austin Brown’s yearly talk about everything you might have wanted to know about the Derby, but were afraid to ask. Other activities in May will be an Orchestra Concert; Wine and Cheese Member Mixer; a new play opening—God of Carnage; and three current movies in The Cypress Hall. Two extra special offerings in May are Gypsy at the Arts Center and, to finish off the month, Hilton Head Plantation’s Big Band will entertain you at our first-ever “Swing Party.” Don’t forget to mark your calendars for these and all the other activities scheduled for the month of May. LOOKING AHEAD… Looking ahead, we are planning our annual trip to Atlanta in September. Although the itinerary has not yet been finalized, some of the venues we are planning to visit are the Coke exhibit, the Aquarium, the High Museum and hopefully a ball game or show. Looking far ahead to 2016, I have reserved first-call tickets to the Broadway touring company’s Carol King’s Beautiful at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. I will also look to reserve seats at the theater in Charlotte; this will allow me choose the theater that has the best seats available. CYPRESS DINING ROOM “OPEN TABLE” Are you tired of eating alone? When he got the call for how many carts he would need, Morty’s decision to take a chance with impending thunder storms turned out to be better than his golf game (sorry Morty). After a bit of juggling they came up with three foursomes and two threesomes; a total of 18 players. Roberta (Bert) Mattka, Ed Deutsch and Fred Kammerer all joined us for the first time. With the lowest score of 32, the team of Lois Sejnost, David Zauber, Bill Dix and Neil Meighan won the prize. Closest to the pin for the ladies was Marilyn Lorenz and for the men, David Zauber. It turned out to be a great day for golf! Golf Lessons with David Zauber Do you like to play golf? Would you like to lower your score or improve your strokes? How about your swing? If you answered yes, then you should call Cypress member, David Zauber. He guarantees improvement or your money back! David was the former Captain of North Carolina State College Golf Team. He was a short time member of the PGA. By the way, lessons are FREE! Please call David Zauber at 342-3880 if you are interested in taking some lessons. Their first production is God of Carnage which won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play, and was the winner of the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Comedy. It was originally directed by Roman Polanski and featured Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Christopher Waltz and Kate Winslet. Before the play begins, two 11-year-old children, Benjamin Reille and Henry Vallon, get involved in argument because Henry refuses to let Benjamin join his ‘gang’. Benjamin knocks out two of Henry’s teeth with a stick. That night, the parents of both children meet to discuss the matter. Benjamin’s father, Alan, is a lawyer who is never off his mobile phone. Benjamin’s mother, Annette is in “wealth management” (her husband’s wealth, to be precise), and consistently wears good shoes. Henry’s father, Michael, is a self-made wholesaler with an unwell mother. Michael’s wife, Veronica, is writing a book about Darfur. As the evening goes on, the meeting degenerates into the four getting into irrational arguments, and their discussion falls into the loaded topics of misogyny, racial prejudice and homophobia. One of the central dramatic moments of the play occurs when Annette vomits onstage, all over the coffee table and books. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modernday computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, who under nailbiting pressure, helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives. New Books in the Library for May The Girl on the Train By Ann Tyler Intersecting, overlapping, not-quite-whatthey-seem lives. Jealousies and betrayals and wounded hearts. A haunting unease that clutches and won’t let go. All this and more helps propel Paula Hawkins’s addictive debut into a new stratum of the psychological thriller genre. At times, I couldn’t help but think: Hitchcockian. From the opening line, the reader knows what they’re in for: “She’s buried beneath a silver birch tree, down towards the old train tracks…” But Hawkins teases out the mystery with a veteran’s finesse. The “girl on the train” is Rachel, who commutes into London and back each day, rolling past the backyard of a happy-looking couple she names Jess and Jason. Then one day Rachel sees “Jess” kissing another man. The day after that, Jess goes missing. The story is told from three characters’ not-to-be-trusted perspectives: Rachel, who mourns the loss of her former life with the help of canned gin and tonics; Megan (aka Jess); and Anna, Rachel’s ex-husband’s wife, who happens to be Jess/ Megan’s neighbor. Rachel’s voyeuristic yearning for the seemingly idyllic life of Jess and Jason lures her closer and closer to the investigation into Jess/Megan’s disappearance, and closer to a deeper understanding of who she really is. And who she isn’t. This is a book to be devoured. Spring is a good time to check your shelves and see if any Cypress Library books have been mixed in with your own. Some very popular new books have gone missing. We have members eager to read them. If they could be returned it would be much appreciated. A reminder: The daily newspapers are in the Library for all to enjoy. Please do not remove the crossword puzzle, the TV section or any other part of the paper. You may bring the section to the Concierge and she will be happy to make a copy for you. Thank you for your consideration. The Library Committee would like you to know that there will now be a container of paper located behind the sign-out book. You will now be able to use the paper to write down phone numbers, titles of books, or you may use them for bookmarks. Help yourself! A cellular phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen. MAN: “Hello” WOMAN: “Hi Honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?” MAN: “Yes.” WOMAN: “I’m at the shops now and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only $2,000. Is it OK if I buy it?” MAN: “Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.” WOMAN: “I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked.” MAN: “How much?” WOMAN: “$90,000.” MAN: “OK, but for that price I want it with all the options.” WOMAN: “Great! Oh, and one more thing... I was just talking to Janie and found out that the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking $980,000 for it.” MAN: “Well, then go ahead and make an offer of $900,000. They’ll probably take it. If not, we can go theextraeighty-thousandifit’swhatyoureallywant.” WOMAN: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you so much!” MAN: “Bye! I love you, too.” The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths wide open. He turns and asks, “Anyone know whose phone this is?” 10 By Karen Brant Issues discussed at April 2, 2015 Committee Meeting THE STATISTICS: In tracking House Calls and other data,ALL categories were below average this month including LOWER than average falls!! EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH OF APRIL CLUB HOUSE DISPLAY WINDOWS VINTAGE SHEET MUSIC PRESENTED BY MARILYN LORENZ If you ever owned a piano, or perhaps any other instrument, you would need music to learn each song. Once you memorized the piece, you would store the music inside the piano bench and sometimes you would take it out to play and sing along with the words written on the sheet music. After a while, you would forget about that music and move on to something else that might be new and more up- to-date. Years would go by and the music would start to accumulate, but somehow you just couldn’t part with it. Well, that’s just what Marilyn Lorenz has been doing for the last 60 years or so. Now she has kindly agreed to share her treasured vintage music with all of you. Stop by the Club House Display Windows and take a peek at the beautifully illustrated sheet music. Can you guess the year each piece of music was published? See how many you recognize and try to sing some of the verses. I promise you a trip down memory lane. JUANITA GREEN Anne Harrison, Health Center Administrator and Juanita’s Boss, wrote this in favor of Juanita to be chosen as Employee of the Month. I vote for “Juanita Greene.” She is the LPN who works in the Cypress Clinic and has worked here since 6/11/2008. She is the Cypress’s “best kept secret.” She keeps busy in the clinic so we hardly ever see her, but ask any Cypress member who has been to the clinic about Juanita and they will have only good things to say! The members say things like: “Juanita draws my lab work and I don’t even feel it!” “ Juanita checks my blood pressure and listens to my heart every week!” “ Juanita makes all my appointments for me and doesn’t get mad at me when I have to change things around.” “ Juanita is always calm and takes the time to listen.” “ Juanita is a good nurse. She has very good assessment skills from all her years of working at the H.H. Hospital.” “ Juanita is excellent in emergency situations.” “ Juanita works hand-in-hand with the Cypress members who volunteer in the Clinic Waiting Room.” “ Juanita assists the Nurse Practitioner to make the clinic visits easier on everyone.” “ Juanita has a great sense of humor – and has crocheted a blanket for just about everyone she knows.”“Juanita has been nominated for “Employee of the Month” a couple of times already – and so deserves this honor.” Let’s make her the Employee of the Month for April – 2015. Thanks, Ann Congratulations Juanita, Employee of the Month of April, 2015. 11 May Environmental Wellness By Cathy Cole, R.N., C.S.A. Wellness Director Environmental Wellness is definitely one of the major areas of our life that promotes health and satisfaction. We always think of “environmental” in terms of waste not, want not, reduce, reuse, and recycle, and think green! Most of us rarely if ever stop to consider how we feel in our “environment.” If you do stop to consider this it will astound you how much it influences our emotional, mental and physical health. All of the people, places and things around us make up our environment, and these things can have both direct and indirect effects on how we feel. No matter what our outer environment is like, we are responsible for the part of the environment that circles around us and affects our daily lives. One way to do this is to surround ourselves with health-oriented people. We sure have plenty of those people here at The Cypress. The camaraderie of the setting here is so inspiring you can’t help but want to live a healthy lifestyle. There are so many healthy things to do here and so many wonderful people to do them with! The most important message here is that environmental wellness begins with you. Enjoy where you are. There is so much beauty in our surroundings that it cannot help but create wellness. Wellness is a lifelong process, whether it is environmental, physical, spiritual, emotional, vocational, intellectual, health, or social. As I have said, in my past letters to you, my Grandmother always told me, “You are responsible for your own happiness so make your own good time!” How right she was! I have had many people, Members and non-Cypress Members, come into my office and tell me that they have never seen such a happy and healthy environment! I have also heard the phrase many times that people think we all take “happy pills”! All I can recommend to you is enjoy the journey, make your own good time, and enjoy each and every step along the way! CYPRESS HALL, LIVING ROOM, ART ROOM AND GAME ROOM SIGN-UP PROCEDURE!!!
