MONTH OF MAY LOOKING AHEAD… CYPRESS DINING ROOM

MONTH OF MAY
The months are speeding by us at such an incredible
pace, it’s hard to keep up with all the happenings here
at The Cypress and on Hilton Head Island. May is
no exception. The first week of May brings us to our
annual Kentucky Derby Party. This is when you make
your way to The Cypress Hall to bet on your favorite
horses, and women (and some men) don their favorite
hats and vie for the best of the best! Don’t forget about
Austin Brown’s yearly talk about everything you might
have wanted to know about the Derby, but were afraid
to ask. Other activities in May will be an Orchestra
Concert; Wine and Cheese Member Mixer; a new
play opening—God of Carnage; and three current
movies in The Cypress Hall. Two extra special offerings
in May are Gypsy at the Arts Center and, to finish off
the month, Hilton Head Plantation’s Big Band will
entertain you at our first-ever “Swing Party.” Don’t
forget to mark your calendars for these and all the
other activities scheduled for the month of May.
LOOKING
AHEAD…
Looking ahead, we are planning our
annual trip to Atlanta in September.
Although the itinerary has not yet
been finalized, some of the venues we are planning
to visit are the Coke exhibit, the Aquarium, the High
Museum and hopefully a ball game or show. Looking
far ahead to 2016, I have reserved first-call tickets
to the Broadway touring company’s Carol King’s
Beautiful at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. I will also
look to reserve seats at the theater in Charlotte; this
will allow me choose the theater that has the best seats
available.
CYPRESS DINING
ROOM “OPEN
TABLE”
Are you tired of eating alone? Do you
order your dinner to go? Do you feel
overwhelmed when entering the Dining
Room? Are you new to The Cypress and
want to make new friends? If you answered yes to any
or all of these questions, the “OPEN TABLE” is for
you! It’s easy! Just call the reservation desk at 689-7099
and say you want to sit at the “OPEN TABLE.” The
Dining Room requests you make your reservation for
6:00 p.m. as seats will be limited. So, stop eating alone;
join others and start socializing! Open to couples and
singles alike. Try it, you’ll like it!

OFF THE TEE
With a very negative forecast for Saturday, Morty
Rollnik was hesitant to do the pairings on Friday
afternoon. When he got the call for how many carts he would
need, Morty’s decision to take a chance with impending thunder
storms turned out to be better than his golf game (sorry Morty).
After a bit of juggling they came up with three foursomes and
two threesomes; a total of 18 players. Roberta (Bert) Mattka, Ed
Deutsch and Fred Kammerer all joined us for the first time. With
the lowest score of 32, the team of Lois Sejnost, David Zauber,
Bill Dix and Neil Meighan won the prize. Closest to the pin for
the ladies was Marilyn Lorenz and for the men, David Zauber.
It turned out to be a great day for golf!
Golf Lessons
with David Zauber
Do you like to play golf? Would you like to lower your
score or improve your strokes? How about your swing?
If you answered yes, then you should call Cypress
member, David Zauber. He guarantees improvement
or your money back! David was the former Captain of North
Carolina State College Golf Team. He was a short time member
of the PGA. By the way, lessons are FREE! Please call David
Zauber at 342-3880 if you are interested in taking some lessons.

WHY IN THE WORLD…?
Monday, May 4, 11, 18
1:30 p.m.
The Game Room
For the next few months, Sue Britt will be looking at the
last two Books of Moses: Numbers and Deuteronomy. The
Israelites left Sinai and headed for Canaan, but their internal
problems led them to spend forty years wandering around in
circles! Have you ever felt that way - feeling that you are
wandering around in the wilderness where nothing seems
to go right? Why not come and join them while they look
and see what they can discover from The Israelites’ triumphs
and trials to help them as individuals to navigate your own
life journey?
They will read deleted passages, talk about them, and see
what there is for each of you to learn. There is a guide to
help you to look into the readings, but there is no pressure
for outside work - this is a group designed for those who
have never looked at the Scriptures and those for whom
Scripture study is a lifelong pursuit. Please feel free to join
them at any time. You’ll be very welcome!
They meet on Monday afternoons, at 1:30 p.m. in the Game
Room. They are finished by 3:15 p.m. The Game Room is
the last room on the left before Randi’s desk in the Cypress
Clubhouse.

“Talking Wall Street”

7 Low Impact Aerobics
Class with Heidi
Cypress member Bill Dix will lead a one-hour informal discussion
on the Stock Market. We are told most managed portfolios
underperform the popular averages. Let’s begin looking for ten
stocks that will beat the Dow Jones average for the rest of the
year. Also, with the tax season behind us, Washington continues
to make changes wich may well effect our April 2015 returns.
I have invited Mitchell Wade, a local CPA for 36 years, to offer
valuable information and advice relating to these changes. He
will also suggest tax efficient ways to donate low cost stocks in
your portfolio. Time permitting, Mitchell wil be happy to answer
other tax related questions.Bill retired to Hilton Head in 1995
after 33 years with Smith Barney on Wall Street and now lives
at The Cypress. He is a regular instructor of investment classes
with Life Long Learning of Hilton Head. All Cypress members
are invited to attend these lively discussions.
Heidi Hanson, Fitness Coordinator for The Cypress, offers
a one-hour, Low Impact Aerobics class every Thursday
morning. If you like a more vigorous workout, then this
class is for you. Heidi will lead you through a series of
cardio exercises to speed up your heart and strengthen
your muscles (including your heart). This is a fun way
to start your morning and to keep you both physically
and mentally fit. Men, this is a great program for you,
too! Put on some comfortable clothing and a pair of
sneakers, and start your day off with a bang! Your body
will thank you!

17 The Lean Ensemble
Theater: God of Carnage
Sunday, May 17
Departing at 1:15 p.m.
$30 per ticket
Blake White has resurrected the old South Carolina Repertory Theater
company and created a new and improved theater company, The
Lean Ensemble Theater. Their first production is God of Carnage
which won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play, and was the winner
of the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Comedy. It was originally
directed by Roman Polanski and featured Jodie Foster, John C.
Reilly, Christopher Waltz and Kate Winslet. Before the play begins,
two 11-year-old children, Benjamin Reille and Henry Vallon, get
involved in argument because Henry refuses to let Benjamin join
his ‘gang’. Benjamin knocks out two of Henry’s teeth with a stick.
That night, the parents of both children meet to discuss the matter.
Benjamin’s father, Alan, is a lawyer who is never off his mobile
phone. Benjamin’s mother, Annette is in “wealth management”
(her husband’s wealth, to be precise), and consistently wears good
shoes. Henry’s father, Michael, is a self-made wholesaler with an
unwell mother. Michael’s wife, Veronica, is writing a book about
Darfur. As the evening goes on, the meeting degenerates into the four
getting into irrational arguments, and their discussion falls into the
loaded topics of misogyny, racial prejudice and homophobia. One
of the central dramatic moments of the play occurs when Annette
vomits onstage, all over the coffee table and books.
Please sign up at the Activities Desk for a ticket and ride to the
theater.

During the winter of
1952, British authorities
entered the home
of mathematician,
cryptanalyst and war hero Alan
Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch)
to investigate a reported burglary.
They instead ended up arresting
Turing himself on charges of
‘gross indecency’, an accusation
that would lead to his devastating
conviction for the criminal offense
of homosexuality – little did
officials know, they were actually
incriminating the pioneer of modernday computing. Famously leading a
motley group of scholars, linguists,
chess champions and intelligence
officers, he was credited with
cracking the so-called unbreakable
codes of Germany’s World War II
Enigma machine. An intense and
haunting portrayal of a brilliant,
complicated man, who under nailbiting pressure, helped to shorten
the war and, in turn, save thousands
of lives.

Andrew Neiman
(Miles Teller) is an
ambitious young
j a z z d r u m m e r,
single-minded in
his pursuit to rise to the top of his
elite East Coast Music Conservatory.
Plagued by the failed writing career
of his father, Andrew hungers
day and night to become one of
the greats. Terence Fletcher (J.K.
Simmons), an instructor equally
known for his teaching talents as for
his terrifying methods, leads the top
jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher
discovers Andrew and transfers the
aspiring drummer into his band,
forever changing the young man’s
life. Andrew’s passion to achieve
perfection quickly spirals into
obsession, as his ruthless teacher

The Girl on the Train
By Ann Tyler
Intersecting, overlapping, not-quite-whatthey-seem lives. Jealousies and betrayals and
wounded hearts. A haunting unease that clutches
and won’t let go. All this and more helps propel
Paula Hawkins’s addictive debut into a new
stratum of the psychological thriller genre. At
times, I couldn’t help but think: Hitchcockian.
From the opening line, the reader knows what
they’re in for: “She’s buried beneath a silver birch
tree, down towards the old train tracks…” But
Hawkins teases out the mystery with a veteran’s
finesse. The “girl on the train” is Rachel, who
commutes into London and back each day,
rolling past the backyard of a happy-looking
couple she names Jess and Jason. Then one
day Rachel sees “Jess” kissing another man.
The day after that, Jess goes missing. The story
is told from three characters’ not-to-be-trusted
perspectives: Rachel, who mourns the loss of
her former life with the help of canned gin and
tonics; Megan (aka Jess); and Anna, Rachel’s
ex-husband’s wife, who happens to be Jess/
Megan’s neighbor. Rachel’s voyeuristic yearning
for the seemingly idyllic life of Jess and Jason
lures her closer and closer to the investigation
into Jess/Megan’s disappearance, and closer to a
deeper understanding of who she really is. And
who she isn’t. This is a book to be devoured.
Spring is a good time to check your shelves
and see if any Cypress Library books have been
mixed in with your own. Some very popular new
books have gone missing. We have members
eager to read them. If they could be returned it
would be much appreciated.
A reminder: The daily newspapers are in the
Library for all to enjoy. Please do not remove the
crossword puzzle, the TV section or any other
part of the paper. You may bring the section to
the Concierge and she will be happy to make a
copy for you. Thank you for your consideration.
The Library Committee would like you to know
that there will now be a container of paper
located behind the sign-out book. You will now
be able to use the paper to write down phone
numbers, titles of books, or you may use them
for bookmarks. Help yourself!

JOKE OF THE MONTH
THE PERFECT HUSBAND
Submitted by Karen Brant
Several men are in the locker room of a golf club.
A cellular phone on a bench rings and a man
engages the hands-free speaker function and begins
to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen. MAN: “Hello” WOMAN: “Hi Honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?”
MAN: “Yes.”
WOMAN: “I’m at the shops now and found this
beautiful leather coat. It’s only $2,000. Is it OK
if I buy it?” MAN: “Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.” WOMAN: “I also stopped by the Lexus dealership
and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked.” MAN: “How much?”
WOMAN: “$90,000.”
MAN: “OK, but for that price I want it with all
the options.”
WOMAN: “Great! Oh, and one more thing...
I was just talking to Janie and found out that
the house I wanted last year is back on the
market. They’re asking $980,000 for it.” MAN: “Well, then go ahead and make an offer of
$900,000. They’ll probably take it. If not, we can go
theextraeighty-thousandifit’swhatyoureallywant.” WOMAN: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you so
much!” MAN: “Bye! I love you, too.” The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring
at him in astonishment, mouths wide open. He turns and asks, “Anyone know whose phone
this is?”

THE STATISTICS: In tracking House Calls and other data,ALL categories
were below average this month including LOWER than average falls!! GREAT NEWS!! PLEASE Watch your step!! Slow down, and consider
attending Heidi’s Balance workshops—they’re great!! And really help! Also, take advantage of one of the Senior Fitness sessions offered to help
you see how fit you are—and if a workshop, training, or Physical Therapy
could help you be safer and more secure. Colin’s presentation was terrific
this past month! More to come!
FALL PREVENTION TIP: Please put non-skid mats under any throw
rugs and, for safety reasons, limit or remove scatter or area rugs!! You or
visitors can slip, fall and be injured!!
PRESTON RECOGNITION!! Quality Improvement award!! PRESTON
recognized as one of the TOP NURSING CENTERS IN THE STATE!! And Monique will be part of the Director of Nursing Advisory Council!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
WILDLIFE AWARENESS: They are out there!! Take care driving and
walking with wildlife becoming more active as Spring finally comes—
alligators in search of love, snakes slithering...
SCAMS: There are loads of them!! Consider Caller ID for your phone! And don’t bother answering those you don’t know! Also, Hargray answering
service works really well—if you are on the phone, away, or if power fails…
you can access your messages from anywhere, and there’s nothing to attach
to your phone; it is in the system! And it is NOT expensive! And know,
The Cypress does NOT publicize member information!!!
SPEAKING OF PHONES: If you are considering changing from Hargray
to Time Warner or getting rid of your land line, please contact Mike to ensure
your alarm system and other Cypress services are not jeopardized.
SPEEDING and PARKING at the Clubhouse continue to haunt us!!! Please
be careful and considerate of others!! SLOW DOWN!! Watch for the newly
painted crosswalks. Leave the two spots on either side of the entrance for
those who really need them!
PNEUMONIA BOOSTERS: We will be getting more info shortly about
Burke’s coming to The Cypress to administer pneumonia booster shots. If
you haven’t had one in five years or more, talk with your doctor. CATHY COLE STILL NEEDS OUR HELP: Please get an updated
Healthcare Power of Attorney and/or a Durable POA to Cathy. And please
BE SURE your relatives, your doctors, and those closest to you know your
wishes!
And always let Cathy Cole know if you or a family member is hospitalized;
she can help!
COMING SOON: Preston updates, reviews of what all is available for
members from a Health and Wellness standpoint and what changes lie ahead! Also, more info on DNR, Planning Documents, Advance Directives we
should have such as Living Wills, Powers of Attorney… Also, update you
File of Life so EMS will be aware!!
HELP YOURSELF! There’s so much available here at The Cypress!! Along with the many offerings that have been around for some time, a few
newer options include: Weight Watchers—over 200 pounds lost in the first
month!! Parkinson Support, Caregiver Support, In-Home Massage are here
and feedback is great!
TOPICS FOR SUSAN CORKERY: If you have any topics you would
like addressed in upcoming monthly presentations, please contact Cathy
Cole or Ann Harrison.
ALERT BUTTONS: See Cathy to explore alternatives and learn about
waterproof models and phone apps that work in conjunction with the buttons!!

VINTAGE SHEET MUSIC
PRESENTED BY MARILYN LORENZ
If you ever owned a piano, or
perhaps any other instrument,
you would need music to learn
each song. Once you memorized
the piece, you would store the
music inside the piano bench and
sometimes you would take it out to
play and sing along with the words
written on the sheet music. After a
while, you would forget about that music and move
on to something else that might be new and more
up- to-date. Years would go by and the music would
start to accumulate, but somehow you just couldn’t
part with it. Well, that’s just what Marilyn Lorenz has
been doing for the last 60 years or so. Now she has
kindly agreed to share her treasured vintage music
with all of you. Stop by the Club House Display
Windows and take a peek at the beautifully illustrated
sheet music. Can you guess the year each piece of
music was published? See how many you recognize
and try to sing some of the verses. I promise you a
trip down memory lane.
JUANITA GREEN
Anne Harrison, Health Center Administrator and Juanita’s Boss, wrote
this in favor of Juanita to be chosen as Employee of the Month.
I vote for “Juanita Greene.”
She is the LPN who works in the Cypress Clinic and has worked here since
6/11/2008. She is the Cypress’s “best kept secret.” She keeps busy in the clinic so we hardly ever see her, but ask any Cypress
member who has been to the clinic about Juanita and they will have only good
things to say! The members say things like:
“Juanita draws my lab work and I don’t even feel it!”
“ Juanita checks my blood pressure and listens to my heart every week!”
“ Juanita makes all my appointments for me and doesn’t get mad at me when I
have to change things around.”
“ Juanita is always calm and takes the time to listen.”
“ Juanita is a good nurse. She has very good assessment skills from all her years
of working at the H.H. Hospital.”
“ Juanita is excellent in emergency situations.” “ Juanita works hand-in-hand with the Cypress members who volunteer in the
Clinic Waiting Room.”
“ Juanita assists the Nurse Practitioner to make the clinic visits easier on
everyone.”
“ Juanita has a great sense of humor – and has crocheted a blanket for just about
everyone she knows.”“Juanita has been nominated for “Employee of the Month”
a couple of times already – and so deserves this honor.”
Let’s make her the Employee of the Month for April – 2015.
Thanks, Ann
Congratulations Juanita, Employee of the Month of April, 2015.

Environmental
Wellness
By Cathy Cole, R.N., C.S.A.
Wellness Director
Environmental Wellness is definitely
one of the major areas of our life that
promotes health and satisfaction. We
always think of “environmental” in terms
of waste not, want not, reduce, reuse,
and recycle, and think green! Most of us
rarely if ever stop to consider how we
feel in our “environment.” If you do stop
to consider this it will astound you how
much it influences our emotional, mental
and physical health. All of the people,
places and things around us make up our
environment, and these things can have
both direct and indirect effects on how we
feel. No matter what our outer environment
is like, we are responsible for the part of
the environment that circles around us and
affects our daily lives.
One way to do this is to surround ourselves
with health-oriented people. We sure have
plenty of those people here at The Cypress.
The camaraderie of the setting here is so
inspiring you can’t help but want to live a
healthy lifestyle. There are so many healthy
things to do here and so many wonderful
people to do them with!
The most important message here is
that environmental wellness begins
with you. Enjoy where you are. There
is so much beauty in our surroundings
that it cannot help but create wellness.
Wellness is a lifelong process, whether
it is environmental, physical, spiritual,
emotional, vocational, intellectual, health,
or social. As I have said, in my past
letters to you, my Grandmother always
told me, “You are responsible for your
own happiness so make your own good
time!” How right she was! I have had
many people, Members and non-Cypress
Members, come into my office and tell me
that they have never seen such a happy and
healthy environment! I have also heard the
phrase many times that people think we
all take “happy pills”!
All I can recommend to you is enjoy the
journey, make your own good time, and
enjoy each and every step along the way!
