The long-term performance of perennials is something of an “elephant in the room” since we all know that some of them are not so perennial, but the nursery trade has never really articulated this. During the webinar, Noel aims to illustrate some of the key features that mark out true perennials from the short-lived ones, and empower participants to make their own predictions about plant performance. He will also look at the varying methods and rates of spread for perennials and the implications of this for their use in projects. The Lurie Garden in Chicago offers an excellent case study in the use of long-lived, but not always entirely problem-free, perennials. Register to attend the webinar, or register for a copy of the presentation. Presentations will only be made available to those who sign up for the webinar prior to it taking place. Cost for members is $55 for live and recorded presentation and $25 for recorded presentation only. Non-member pricing is $110 for live and recorded presentation and $50 for recorded presentation only. Click here for a registration form, or register online. Noel Kingsbury has been described as “the voice of authority with renegade” undertones. A gardener since childhood, Noel has run a nursery, designed gardens and public spaces and done doctoral research at the University of Sheffield’s world-renowned Department of Landscape. Noel is best known for his promotion of naturalistic planting design but is passionate about any kind of innovation in the garden or the wider greenscape. He has also written more than 20 books on garden matters, including four with leading designer Piet Oudolf, as well as the only history of plant breeding. Noel lives and gardens in the Welsh Borders near Hay-on-Wye. 2015 APLD International Landscape Designer of the Year Awarded Congratulations to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Andropogen Associates, Ltd. for being named 2015 APLD International Landscape Designer of the Year for the non-residential design, Center for Sustainable Landscapes. In its ruling in Perez v. Perez, the federal district court in the Northern District of Florida nullified the Department of Labor’s 2008 H-2B regulations, saying the department lacks authority under the Immigration and Nationality Act to issue regulations in the H-2B program, which permits employers to temporarily hire nonimmigrants to perform nonagricultural labor or services of a temporary nature for a limited period of time, such as a one-time occurrence, seasonal need, peakload need or intermittent need. As of March 5, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services temporarily stopped processing H-2B petitions, and on March 4 the U.S. Department of Labor stopped accepting or processing applications for H-2B prevailing wages and temporary labor certifications. The federal government is considering appropriate response to the court order, and the Department of Labor is expected to respond to the decision sometime in April.
