Grimes, Communications Manager (804) 225-2775 Board of Education Approves Expedited Retakes of Elementary & Middle School SOLs Parents Must Consent before Students are Retested The state Board of Education says that elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by narrow margins or because of extenuating circumstances this spring may be retested before the end of the year — provided that school divisions first secure parental permission. The board voted unanimously at its March 26 meeting in Richmond to adopt a resolution allowing expedited retakes of SOL tests in grades three through eight, with the exception of the eighth-grade writing test. “The elementary and middle school SOLs are not high-stakes tests for students but the board wants to be responsive to students who want a second chance to demonstrate proficiency before the end of the school year,” Board of Education President Christian N. Braunlich said. “At the same time, after hearing stories of student anxiety over SOL testing, we want to ensure that we don’t add any further to student stress.” In addition to failing by a narrow margin or having an extenuating circumstance, a student must have passed the associated subject or course to be eligible for an expedited retake. School divisions must also advise parents that a decision not to retake a test will not impact the child’s grade or academic record. The 2015 General Assembly approved legislation directing the board to develop regulations to allow expedited retakes of all non-writing SOL tests, regardless of grade span. But the legislation, which was signed by Governor Terry McAuliffe, does not become effective until July 1, after the 2014-2015 school year. The Board of Education’s resolution permitting retakes became effective upon adoption. “I am delighted that we were able to identify funds to make expedited retakes for elementary and middle school students possible this year,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Steven R. Staples said. The Holton Science Fair is Wednesday, May 19, 2015. Projects are due Monday, May 11, 2015. Science Fair Projects will be judged May 12-15, 2015 and will be displayed at the May 19, 2015 PTA Meeting. All students in grades fourth through fifth are required to complete a science fair project. Grades Pre-kindergarten through third grade students may submit an individual project or class/group project (some of the first grade teachers may require individual projects). All projects will be entered in the school-wide science fair. At the discretion of the first through fifth grade teachers, the project will count as a test grade and a project grade. This is a great opportunity for your son/daughter to receive an “A” on both a test and project. Ten projects from grades K-4 will be kept and entered in next year’s city wide science fair. Fourth through fifth grade projects must be completed outside the classroom. Parents are encouraged to assist when necessary, but the student should assume the greatest responsibility for the project. Students are required to prepare projects using the scientific method. They have been taught this in class. Included in this packet are the following: “Guidelines for Submitting a Science Fair Project”, “Specifications for the Exhibit of the Science Project” and “Scientific Method Vocabulary”. Please read this information carefully. This information will aid you and your child in planning and displaying his/her project. Because science projects are timeconsuming and require planning ahead and pacing, a Student Self-Check Schedule sheet is included in this packet. Please use the self-check to ensure that your son/daughter is on track and will complete the project by the due date. Science Fair projects will be judged in several areas. Therefore, all projects MUST be an experiment, not a model. Virginia Standards of Learning 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 state that students will participate in scientific investigations. An experiment MUST include the following: • Title (stated in the form of a question) • Purpose • Hypothesis • Materials • Procedure • Responding/Manipulated Variable • Constants • Data • Results • Conclusion • Some projects will not include each of the category headings above. Category headings should be included in projects as appropriate to grade level. Specifications for the Exhibit of the Science Fair Project Our school requires a free-standing, three-sided display that is no larger than 122 48 inches wide, 108 inches tall, and 30 inches deep. The display may be made out of plywood or fiberboard hinged together or may be constructed from folded, corrugated cardboard or reinforced poster board. Please ensure that the display is sturdy and will not fall over. Students should organize their exhibit according to the following arrangement. The display can be covered with colored paper. Use contrasting colors to print the title and other headings. Type the information for each step and fasten it below the appropriate heading. Construction paper can be used as backing for information. The title should be simply stated in the form of a question. Purpose The purpose should be stated as an objective. Why are you conducting this experiment? Hypothesis After you have done some research on the project topic, you should formulate a statement of what you would expect to happen as a result of your experiment or investigation. The hypothesis is an “educated guess” of the expected answer to the research question. The hypothesis should be written in a complete sentence. It should not be stated as an opinion, beginning with, “I think”. Materials The materials should be listed in sentence form. The materials are everything that was used to conduct the experiment. Procedure This is the step-by-step directions as to how the experiment was conducted. This should be written in complete sentences using a numbered sequence or transitional words such as first, next, last and finally. Independent or Manipulated Variable & Dependent or Responding Variable In any investigation only one factor should be changed, while all other factors remain the same. The factor that is changed or manipulated is called the independent or manipulated variable. This is the variable that you changed on purpose. The independent or manipulated variable has an effect on another factor, called the dependent or responding variable. This is the variable that changed as a result of the experiment. Constants The constants are all of the factors that remained the same in the experiment. Data Data is collected throughout the experiment and can convey a great deal of information. Your data includes any photographs, charts, graphs, tables, or drawings showing what happened before, during or after conducting the experiment. Results The results should explain the data in the form of a statement. Results should include what happened during or after conducting the experiment. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to find out if the temperature of ketchup affects how fast it flows Hypothesis: Example 1-If the temperature of ketchup is increased, then the travel distance will decrease (stated as cause & effect). Example 2- It is hypothesized that the travel distance of ketchup will decrease if the temperature of ketchup is increased). Materials: 3 packets of ketchup, 1 cup of ice water, 1 cup of room temperature water, 1 cup of hot water, 1 dinner plate, a stopwatch and a metric ruler Procedure: 1. Fill a container with water and allow a few minutes for the water to reach room temperature. 2. Use tape or a felt marker to make a starting line on the plate near the top. 3. Fill a second container with ice water and a third container with hot tap water. 4. Place a ketchup packet in each temperature of water; wait 2 minutes. 5. Quickly remove each packet and squeeze an equal amount of ketchup in separate “blobs” on the starting line. Independent/Manipulated Variable: The manipulated or independent variable was the temperature of the ketchup (in ice water, room temperature, and hot water) Dependent/Responding Variable: The responding or dependent variable was the distance the ketchup flowed in 30 seconds. Constants: The constants in this experiment were the brand of ketchup, angle at which the plate was tilted, amount of time ketchup packet remained in the water and travel time. Data: See photographs, graphs and chart Results: The ketchup that was placed in hot water traveled the farthest distance. Conclusion: The ketchup placed in hot water traveled the farthest distance because heat causes molecules to spread apart and move faster, causing it to flow down the plate at a faster rate. Cold water causes molecules to stick together very closely. My results do not support my hypothesis that when the temperature of the ketchup is increased, the travel distance of the ketchup would decrease. In fact, when the temperature of the ketchup increased, so did the travel distance of the ketchup. The practice are referred to as A and B, each two-credits. Planned observations and tasks are identified for the twosemester sequence. Students spend a minimum of 40 hours in a designated school. Practicum a students are placed in a K-2 classroom and their time should be spent during language arts. The practicum is intended to be a time for observation and interaction. While a few tasks require teaching formal lessons, the practicum is not intended to provide extensive instructional experience. To provide focus to the experience, tasks for the practicum students in early elementary education have been identified. Timeframe of the Practicum Each practicum student will spend a minimum of four hours a week for ten+ weeks in their assigned school. Days and times will vary for each student because of individual class schedules. Moreover, days and times must be agreed upon by the cooperating teacher and the student. Students will begin and end their practicum experience according to semester guidelines established by the university instructors. Professional Roles • • Role of the Cooperating Teacher: The preparation of new teachers is an important task that could not be done adequately without the professional and unselfish assistance of effective teachers willing to share their classroom. Cooperating teachers have two major responsibilities during the practicum experience. First, and foremost, they should provide opportunities for practicum students to work with students in a variety of capacities. Students are to work closely with the teacher, and should never assume responsibility for the entire class alone. Second, teachers need to provide opportunities for students to complete assigned tasks and verify completion of hours by signing the timesheet. Teachers are encouraged to give feedback to students, but are not asked to sign grades. An evaluation will be completed at the end of the practicum experience to provide more extensive feedback to the students. Role of the Student: During the practicum experience, the student is a learner. The student is to eagerly seek to learn about the policies and procedures of the school as well as the dynamics of teaching and learning that occurs in the classroom. The practicum students are provided the opportunity to observe and learn in a classroom environment and should act responsibly at all times. Informal participation is encouraged when directed by the cooperating teacher. Students should complete practicum tasks after discussion with cooperating teacher and should listen to feedback to improve their teaching. Professional Expectations of the Student Practicum students represent VCU and the School of Education. They are guests in the school and classrooms. What students do while in the public schools reflects on the institution and influences the thinking of professionals regarding the quality of the teacher preparation program and the students. It is expected that each student will represent VCU well. Students’ performance during their practicum will also become part of their “legacy” and how others view them as potential applicants for a position in the school division. Consequently, students should pay close attention to such things as punctuality, reliability, appropriate dress, neatness, scholarship, and willingness to work with the cooperating teacher. Essentially, students should demonstrate enthusiasm for relating to children and be committed to working with teachers and performing designated tasks of the practicum. Student Responsibilities Students are expected to fulfill the following responsibilities during the semester: • In-school assignment for minimum required time of 4 hours each week. • Spend a minimum of ten weeks in assigned school during the semester. • Complete all required tasks which may vary by instructor. If extenuating circumstances occur, notify the school and cooperating teacher prior to absence(s) or immediately thereafter. Arrangements must be made with cooperating teacher to make up absences. A school lockdown confines all staff and students to the classroom due to a perceived or real threat; isolation of staff and students inside the school limits exposure to risk to outside contaminants: people, exposures or situations. When should a school go into “lockdown” and who makes the decision? There are several reasons for a school to determine that a lockdown status is most protective of its staff and students. There may be an unwelcomed person or persons on the campus grounds; local law enforcement has notified administration of a situation (i.e., chemical accident) or person of concern in the vicinity; or a menacing animal has been seen on the grounds. In short, there is some sort of event occurring, or threatening to occur; limiting access to staff and students can mitigate that the school believes. For actual incidents requiring lockdowns, building principals can initiate lockdown status or by the prompting/guidance of local law enforcement. • • • • • • DIRECT all students from hallways into classroom. Notify appropriate staff of primary classroom/location if/as possible that student is safe. Do not exit classroom for ANY reason. Inform students that they are not allowed to use their cell phones for calls or for text messaging during a lockdown drill or situation. Hundreds of calls being made simultaneously will not only jam the system, but will result in parents arriving at the school, which only increases the danger to everyone. LOCK all exterior doors. If there is no lock on the door – move heaviest object in front if possible. CLOSE windows and blinds. STAY AWAY from all doors and windows, move students towards walls away from door. SHUT OFF LIGHTS. DO NOT OPEN exterior doors for any reason until an “all clear” is received. Location Considerations Gymnasium: Students should be moved into the locker room, lock all doors and seek shelter in pre-‐‑identified safe areas. Lunchroom: Students should be moved to the far side of the most open areas, turn tables on side if necessary. Outside: Students should stop, drop and remain still or huddle around playground equipment p.m.ent; if/as possible, depending upon situation, attempt to move into building. Bathrooms: Students/staff should move into a stall, lock the staff door and crouch on the toilet so feet, hands and head are hidden from view Hallway: Students should move into closest classroom immediately Library: Students should seek shelter under tables, or in aisles. Lock the door, turn out the lights. What to Tell Students As appropriate, encourage staff to review the importance of emergency drills with students, as well as their role during drills. Provide students with specific instructions about each drill and include the drill objectives. Allow student feedback concerning lockdown drills. Provide drill information to all new students. Plan accordingly for students with disabilities.
