Welcome to SBCM!
A
s spring approaches, once again, we are
in the thick of planning and prepping for
another nautically remarkable season
at South Bay Cove. I’m sure that you are all
looking forward to getting back to the cruising
waters of Georgian Bay.
There are a number of reasons why I believe that this is going to be an awesome year
for boating. Here are some predictions for
2015:
1 Gas prices are lower than they have been
in years! Experts at www.gasbuddy.com
predict that Ontario gas will take a minor
increase from the current winter price but
won’t come anywhere near the 2011 road
gas high of roughly $1.37/litre.
2 Water levels are projected to be approximately 1’ above the 2014 June water levels
by June of 2015. According to the US Army
Corps of Engineers forecast, Lake Huron and
Michigan are projected to continue rising.
www.lre.usace.army.mil .
3 The Old Farmer’s Almanac has predicted a
hotter than usual & dry summer for 2015!
The hottest periods will occur in mid- to late
June, early and mid-July, and early August.
Additionally, South Bay and Top of the
Cove have lots planned in terms of new menus,
events, entertainment and the usual day-today friendly & unrivaled customer service!
As part of preparing for the upcoming season, Bill and I spend time purchasing for Sea
N’ Things. I have to give credit to Bill for his
efforts on this. Shopping is not his favourite
thing (it’s mine) and as we walk the many aisles
to find the best resale items for our store, Bill
perseveres and pushes through the task. In
turn, we have a put together a great selection
of new boat/cottage décor and boutique lines
of clothing! We can’t wait for you to see our
choices in May but for now, take a look at the
Sneak Peak on page 8.
.
Now, with the above reported, I am sure
that you can appreciate my enthusiasm for
2015!

Before you read on, I would like to direct
your attention to the amazing newsletter
artwork and design. Every winter I compile a
number of files and photos and send them off
South Bay Cove Team members
to, Dejan Kocetkov of Dayon Design. Dejan,
being quite familiar with our operation, does
an amazing job of portraying the feel and aesthetics of South Bay Cove through his artwork
& design. Thank you, Dejan! Further, a number
of boaters have sent me pictures and assisted
with content over the winter. I would like to
thank contributors for your help. The newsletter wouldn’t be the same without your support.
A special thank you goes out to Roy Allen, of
Imagine, for contributing the 2015 cover photo. Roy’s wife, Lynn, sent me the photo and
it was an easy decision to use it on our cover
this year. This photo encompasses so much
of what boating on Georgian Bay is about and
only intensifies the desire to be on the water
again. Not too much longer, boater friends!
Please read on and enjoy the 2015 edition
of Waterlines. See you soon!

Boater safety:
Summer
Storms
I
f you are an avid boater on Georgian
Bay you have no-doubt encountered
lightning storms. It is mesmerizing
and beautiful to watch but its power is
mind-boggling. According to Mike Kelly,
owner of Bayland Enterprises specializing
in Marine Electronics and Electrical, “a
lightning strike can produce up to 1,000,000
volts and 50 amps. Lighting can strike any
place and anytime regardless of location.
It is totally unpredictable. In boating, the
most vulnerable situation is a single boat
underway, far from shore a in a thunderstorm.” It is a frightening phenomenon
and although it is rare, can cause death or
serious injury. Although we cannot prevent
lightning, we can minimize damage caused
by a strike and increase safety of passengers on board a vessel.
Mike Kelly says that when a boat is
struck, lightning can flash between metal
objects and any conductive item causing
much damage due to high voltage and current. The results will be evident in damaged
wiring, electronics, control systems and the
hull.
Andrew Robertson, a life-long avid boater and Vice President of Skippers’ Plan marine insurance in Toronto, states that “Over
the last two years we have seen an increase
in both frequency and severity of claims
due to lightning. The severity increase can
be attributed to the ever increasing amount
of electronics that are found on cruising
boats these days. The increase in frequency is due to the fact we are experiencing
more severe weather more often than ever
before.” The good news is that every boat
insurance policy that Andrew has encountered covers damage caused by lightning.
4
So, if you are insured, you should be financially protected against lightning.
Robertson and Kelly both agree that
having a good protective bonding system
may help to reduce the severity if a strike
occurs on board a vessel. Bonding is most
effective during the construction of the
boat but having a system installed by a
qualified marine electrician such as Bayland
Enterprises is a very good alternative.
A “Faraday Cage” (invented in 1836 by
English Scientist, Michael Faraday) is a
bonding system in which the structures and
equipment (engine, prop shaft, railings,
mast, keel, rigging, arches, generators etc.)
are connected via a conductor bonding strip
to create a low resistance path to the water
(ground).
Robertson offers that every vessel
should have a Lightning Strike Response
Plan in place. Here are some precautions
and preventative measures to take should a
lightning storm occur:
• Listen to weather forecasts and avoid
possible lightning situations.
• If you see lightning in the distance, take
cover, head for safe harbour or marina.
• Keep everyone low in the boat below
deck within the zone of protection.
• Keep away from metal items.
• If feasible, disconnect electronics (have
at least one marina handheld vhf removed from base and turned off for use
later).
If your vessel is struck by lightning:
• Check your crew and passengers for
injury and call 911 if injuries have
occurred.
• Immediately look for holes in the
hull, near the waterline.
• Check all through-hull connections
above and below the waterline.
• Look for water entering near the
prop shaft and rudder.
• Ensure engine and rudder controls
are functioning.
• Check electrical panels for tripped
breakers.
• Have your boat checked over by an
experienced technician.
Although lightning shouldn’t be taken lightly at any time, it is important to know that
the odds are still in our favour when safety
measures are in place. Follow the precautions provided by Mike Kelly and Andrew
Robertson and keep enjoying the beautiful
playground that we call Georgian Bay.
A special thank you for Mike Kelly and Andrew
Robertson for providing their knowledge and
expertise for this article.
• Lower all antennas, downriggers and
metal structures.
• Know CPR.

Andy Scobie
W
A Word from Scobie
Yacht Services…
ell, here it is, newsletter time again. The boat show has come
and gone and the days are growing longer as we head towards another launch at SBC.
Question 1: Is there a pre-departure check list
before leaving the dock?
With Barry and Liz’s announcement to sell SBC, the most popular
question as you can guess is, what about launch. I can assure you that
the entire Scobie Yacht Services Team will be there as we have been for
the past twenty-four spring launches business will continue as usual.
Pre-Departure checklists are an excellent idea. As an owner you should
tailor a check list for the departure of your boat since boats vary so
much. In general, every boat owner can do the following:
This past fall was a very wet one and even though we had a great
early start we ended up finishing a week later than normal. Despite
that, the team still managed to complete haul-out and winterization
before snowfall. With not much snow to date it has been an easy year
and my guys are enjoying their winter.
1) Check battery voltage on master panel.
Ask Andy…
5) Brief crew on how lines are to come off.
Again this year, we have a few great questions that all boaters can relate to.
6) Enjoy your day out.
2) Start engines and genset.
3) Unplug shore power. (Yes, some people forget)
4) Look at exhaust to make sure water is flowing.

Question 2: What to do if the anchor won’t
come up or batteries are dead?
If the anchor won’t come up the first
thing to do is make sure the main
breaker hasn’t tripped. Then listen
to hear if the motor is clicking when
the switch is activated. If that is all
good then it is time to call for assistance. If the batteries are dead,
start your genset and turn on the
house charger. Let the boat run for an hour and the motors should fire
up. If you don’t’ have a generator it is advisable to keep a booster pack
on board as a back-up plan.
I am happy to go into these questions further on the dock. Please
feel free to stop me.
In closing, if you do have any special projects let me know early so I can
schedule to complete the work. Our waxing program has returned again
for the third year and Mike & Sawyer will be on the buffers once again.
We look forward to seeing everyone and hearing from you in the meantime and will continue to service your yachts just as we have in the past.

Ethanol Fuel Update
T
here has been some discussion that ethanol-free fuel may no
longer be available to marinas for 2015 and this may be the case
for some, but not for South Bay Cove.
Adding expensive fuel additives to your tanks to compensate for ethanol fuel, is sometimes not enough and can lead to expensive repairs. In
order to avoid this issue we have worked hard with our supplier to come
up with a viable solution to the issue and we can assure you that ethanol-free fuel will be available in 2015.
There are currently two options to get ethanol-free fuel to South Bay
Cove and details are being finalized.
• Option 1 – mid-grade, ethanol-free fuel is available locally and can be
shipped to South Bay in place of the ethanol based regular grade fuel.
• Option 2 – regular grade fuel is available from Sarnia, as opposed to
our usual Toronto based location.
Both options are good which leaves cost as the biggest factor so we
will work toward the lowest cost option to pass on to our boaters.
While we are pleased to be able to continue to offer an ethanol free
option, not all marinas will, so, if you can’t take on gas before departing
South Bay please be sure to ask if fuel is ethanol- free.

Clean Marine Update
A
s many are aware, South Bay Cove prides itself on environmental awareness. We continually strive to maintain and enhance
environmental initiatives on the marina property. In September, 2014, South Bay Cove was independently evaluated and rated on
our environmental practices. We were re-issued our Diamond Rating.
We are one of a handful of marinas in Ontario that have been issued
this high environmental standing.
• Avoid flushing chemicals through grey water systems.
Maintaining the environmental standards set-forth by the Clean
Marine program takes participation from employees, customers and
sub-contractors visiting South Bay. Here are a few things that boaters can do to ensure that South Bay leaves a minimal environmental
footprint:
• Do not overfill your vessels fuel tanks. Estimate and aim for ¾ to
7/8 full.
• Use only EcoLogo trademarked products on board your vessel.
• Avoid idling engines for long periods of time.
• Do not transfer fuels or oils near the water.
• Inspect your bilge regularly and clean as required so that the bilge
pump does not discharge overboard.
Every year we can strive to do better than the year before. We
thank you in advance for your contribution.
• Ensure lighting and air-conditioning/heat is turned off while not on
board your vessel.
• Separate tin, plastics, paper, cardboard, glass and waste into bags
before leaving at your dockbox for pick-up.
