“It has been an emotional week with the passing of one of our seniors, Joseline Gonzales. She
was a smart, beautiful young lady who was well-liked by everyone who knew her. In talking with
her mother and father at the viewing and rosary service last evening, they shared their
appreciation for the support and comfort that our school community has provided.

It is our concern for one another that helps us move through this difficult time. And yesterday,
that compassion and our welcoming community was quickly evident to 15 educators
who visited from Washington DC. When our guests met with staff, observed instruction,
and interacted with students during passing periods, they saw complete student
engagement in every room, visual and tactile supports for second language learners,
rigor and differentiation, high levels of student discussion and courtesy and respect for
one another. They noted that we are comfortable talking about diversity and that we do
not shy away from open, honest conversations

A host family is still needed for a Chinese Exchange Student. Her name is Yitong Jiang
and is from Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Her birthday is August 14, 1998 so will
soon be turning 17. She is now finishing up 10th grade at Hebron Academy in Maine,
where she stayed for one year. I have also attached her motivational letter, to give you a
better sense of her personality.

ATHLETICS
State Track and Field Championships
Our Boys Track team showed why they are one of the fastest in Colorado at the first day
of the State Championships yesterday! In the 100m Prelims Surae Poole ran the fastest time
of the day at 10.85 and will find himself in the best lane on Saturday’s final. Malcolm Wright
also qualified with one of his fastest times of the year, so we will have two South Rebels in the
100m Final…WOW! In the 400m Marcus Steiner ran one of his personal bests and was neck

and neck with the fastest runner in the state, so he also qualified for Saturday’s 400m final. Our
4x200 Relay qualified for the finals later today as did our 4x100 which will take place on
Saturday. The 4x800 Relay team ran their final yesterday and finished 14
th
in the State. Very proud of our guys and we hope to report that we have State Champions after
this weekend! Come out and support the team at Jefferson County Stadium – State Track is an amazing
event!

Right now, ISE (International Student Exchange) is trying to find host families for 11
females and 20 males. The majority of them are 16 years old, with a few who are either 15 or
17.Countries of origin of our current students include: Spain, China, Brazil, Italy, Germany,
Finland, Colombia, Czech Republic, Thailand, and Vietnam.
We ask (via the legislation and the US Dept. of State who designates us) that families simply
provide a loving home with 3 square meals a day, a proper bed, a place to sleep, and inclusion
in the family responsibilities and activities. Students come fully insured and must have
$300/month of their own spending money. They are here for an entire academic year
(August-June) and I believe have only a few days after the last day of classes to remain in the
country. Colin Martin is happy to speak with anyone who wants to learn more about the
specifics of a student. We have their interests and religious affiliations, etc., so finding a good
match for both the student and family shouldn't be difficult. For further information or questions,

- Our Color Guard has presented the National Colors at 10 different functions
around Denver supporting various organizations.
- Several of our students were able to meet and escort the former Secretary of State
Colin Powell around our area, discussing his early years in the ROTC program in New
York.
- Over 90 of our JROTC students marched in the Denver Veteran’s Day Parade in
November.
- Over 50 of our students and guests attended the 122 nd annual JROTC Military
Banquet and Ball in March.

May 13 th : The Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble and Drum Line will perform in the
auditorium at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 13. 2015.
The concert band will perform
a variety of repertoire that will include marches, Spanish themes, classical music and a tribute
to rock and roll. The jazz ensemble will highlight a tribute to Duke Ellington and will perform new
arrangements of old standards. The final composition will be a combined performance with the
jazz ensemble, concert band and drum line.

to raise money for its shoestring budget
. Women will show samples of their We Made This projects, including baby clothing, aprons,

along with a silent auction and stories told by refugee women and community partners.

DENVER - The 17 th Annual Wash Park Home Tour is Saturday, May 9, 2015. Tickets can

It was an amazing two days for South's Boy's Track and Field Team. With only one week
left to State Qualify, South ran in two competitive meets, Viking and Cherry Creek Invites. Malcolm Wright and Surae Poole flashed to 1st place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters, while
every relay ran their best times this year placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. David Reese has added to
the High Jump ranks jumping 6 feet for 2nd place.
The Girls team, improved times and is hoping to qualify for state events this week at the League
Championships. Everyone is invited to cheer on the boys and girls for awesome performances
at All City stadium Thursday, May 7th beginning at 3:30 pm and Saturday, May 9th from 10:00
am to 3:00 pm. South has one of the best teams of talent and dedication this year. Nancy

The PTSA would like to thank ALL of its volunteers for their participation in making the
2014-2015 school-year such a success. They have supported Freshman Academy,
Homecoming festivities, ELA parent community meetings, school productions, Culture Fest,
Prom, the Denver South Food Bank, Challenge Day, multiple Teacher Appreciation events, the
food bank and management of the school store all through our parent volunteers.

The PTSA plays a major role in fundraising to support our teachers and staff. They host various
opportunities to give back to South. This year, the “I AM DENVER SOUTH DIRECT
DONATION CAMPAIGN” raised over $18,000
, all of
which is funneled right back to the school. In addition, they are supporting and working towards
the creation of a LED sign at the front of the school. We’ll be lighting up Denver with all of our
good news and events.
Marketing
PTSA parents have supported South in their marketing efforts by greeting prospective parents
and giving tours; being present at the Showcase night for parent breakouts; a part of the Denver
South Community Partnership Board; creating Denver South Signs in the neighborhood and
promoting other South events.
South staff and students recognize the countless hours of parent volunteers, all the
financial support and expertise of many of our parents. Thank you to all of our parent
volunteers! You are key to much of our success. A huge shout out to Carolyn Howard,
President, Kerry Ziller, Vice President, Carol Angel, Secretary, and Anne McDonald,
Treasurer along with Nancy Rice, Teacher Appreciation, Sybil Kisken and Lisa Filholm

ATHLETICS
Tennis: Our Lady Rebels played excellent tennis last Friday, April 24 th at our annual Rebel
Invitational. The team
took second place overall
led by team captains Anna Thielen—first place #1 singles and Kathleen Linton—first place #2
Singles. They won all three of their matches. Crystal Schwartzkopf battled for 3
rd
place in #3 Singles. Lisa Nguyen and Lydia Halick took 4
th
place at the #4 Doubles position and Sylvia Lacher and Jennifer Gurtler finished in fifth place at
#1 Doubles. Even though our season is coming to a quick close, we are already looking forward
to next season’s team.
Girls’ Soccer: We are currently 10-3 and second in the DPS 4a/5a league (1 st in 4a, behind to
East). We are on a winning of streak with 8 straight wins and will play our first round of playoffs

Top Defenders: Our solid back four, Rayni Lewis, Maddie Baker, Esmerelda Baltierra, and

The girls attend practice 6 days a week, run fitness drills, watch and analyze film, work with their
CPEX coach for mental fitness, and support each other academically. (They are ALL honor
athletes!)

Say What? Our South Honor Athletes (3.5+ GPA) has risen from an impressive 125 last
year to an outstanding 180 this year! A luncheon was held yesterday in their honor!

DENVER - The 17 th Annual Wash Park Home Tour is Saturday, May 9, 2015, 10am-4pm
featuring five distinctive homes in Washington Park, Denver, Colo. Tickets can be
purchased in advance for $20 at

directly from Steele Elementary students. On the day of the Tour,
tickets are $25
and can be purchased at any house on the Tour or the Home Tour Street Fair at South
High School (Franklin/Louisiana). Proceeds from the Tour benefit Steele Elementary
School and the Denver Public Schools Education Outreach Program. The food truck proceeds will benefit South High School!
As a Mother’s Day weekend Denver tradition, the Wash Park Home Tour showcases distinctive
single-family homes from different styles ranging from historic renovations to contemporary new
builds and updated architecture that fuses old with new. This year’s event will again feature
the Wash Park Home Tour Street Fair at South High School with food trucks, event
sponsors, Steele’s garden plant sale, art activities and more. Attendees will also be able
to ascend and tour the beautiful and historic South High School bell tower.

1. Load up your old latex paint cans.
2. Bring them to the East parking lot at Denver South High School -1700 E. Louisiana Ave.
Denver, CO 80210. Look for the GreenSheen banners and truck.
3. We will be on hand to unload your vehicle of all recyclable contents (GreenSheen recycles
both paint and recycles/reuses the associated steel and plastic containers in which the paint
was originally packaged).
