Transferring into UIC’s Accounting major *Please note that the following only applies to students who intend to apply to UIC’s Accounting major. This does not apply to other majors in the College of Business Administration. If a student intends to apply to UIC’s Accounting program, we generally advise them to NOT take Financial and Managerial Accounting at their current school. Why is it so hard to transfer in Financial and Managerial accounting to UIC? The biggest obstacle for students who intend to transfer into the accounting program is the policy set forth by the accounting department on entering into the major. The UIC accounting major is a very rigorous program with the intent of preparing students to take the CPA exam. We have found that students are better prepared for the upper level accounting courses if they have taken the Financial and Managerial accounting courses at UIC, and most transfer students end up retaking the courses at UIC. This is why we usually advise accounting majors to wait and take these courses at UIC for the first time. What do students need to know if they have already taken Financial and Managerial accounting? All transfer students who have completed both courses at time of admission are required to take the accounting placement exam. If a student did well in their accounting classes can they have the exam waived? We only offer exemption from the accounting exam if students meet all of the following criteria: o Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.60 or higher at time of admission to UIC. o Have completed both Financial and Managerial Accounting at time of admission. In-progress (IP) courses will not be considered. o Must have received a “B” or better in Financial and Managerial Accounting at the original institution. Important points to know: All decisions are based on GPA and grades posted at the time of admission to UIC. “In Progress” accounting courses do not count and are treated as though the course was never attempted: o The accounting course must have a grade posted when the student applies to UIC. o Even if the course is complete by the time a student attends new student orientation at UIC, it will not be considered as all decisions are made based off the student’s file when they were accepted to UIC. The GPA on a student’s transcript may not reflect their actual cumulative GPA if they have repeated courses. Original grades (such as a “D” or “F”) for repeated courses are counted back into their GPA at UIC, even if their original school excluded them from the GPA calculation under a grade forgiveness policy. UIC does not factor in "+" or "-" grades. We only use A, B, C, D, and F, with a weight of 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0, respectively. Accounting Placement Exam information, upcoming exam dates, and exam registration can be found at businessconnect.uic.edu under the Accounting department section.
