DESCRIPTION
A charming period yeoman’s farmhouse understood to have origins in the 16th century, presented
with attractive timbered, brick and stone elevations under a tiled roof. There are many period
features including a wealth of beams and original fireplaces. The property has an interesting
history, being the former home in the 1930’s of Peggy Guggenheim, the American art collector and
more recently, for a brief period in the 1980’s, by the actress Kate O’Mara. The present owners have
carried out a number of improvements to the house and grounds during their period of ownership,
including the addition of a dressing room and the provision of a detached cottage and landscaped
grounds. Features of the accommodation include a fine sitting room with inglenook fireplace
with steps leading down to a delightful sun room. There are three further reception rooms to the
ground floor, complemented by a good size kitchen/breakfast room. To the first floor, there is
an excellent master suite with dressing room and en suite bathroom with further en suite to the
second bedroom, two further bedrooms and a family bathroom. An internal inspection is highly
recommended.
OUTSIDE

and Bathroom. There is a DOUBLE GARAGE with two sets of double doors, light and power
connected and GARDEN STORE above with separate access. FURTHER GARAGE and ADJOINING

LOCATION
Lying on the Hampshire/West Sussex border in a rural location backing onto fields. Hurst is a
small hamlet located in an area of outstanding natural beauty and forming part of the South
Downs National Park. The nearby villages of Buriton and South Harting include village schools,
public houses and shops. The market town of Petersfield has a comprehensive range of shopping,
sporting and leisure facilities and there is mainline station providing a rail service to London
Waterloo in about 1 hour. There is an excellent choice of both state and private schools in the
vicinity including Bedales and Churchers College. Ditcham Park school is just 3 miles from the
property. The A3 provides good access to London and the south coast. There are many acres of
fine countryside close at hand, ideal for walking and riding, including the South Downs Way and
Sussex Border Path.
GARDEN
This is a charming feature of the property providing a colourful and mature setting. The property
is approached by a five bar gate and driveway terminating in front of the house and providing
parking for several vehicles. The gardens comprise extensive flower borders with a wide array of
specimen shrubs and trees including an ancient yew reputedly over 2000 years old. At one end of
the garden there is extensive lawn with a lovely outlook over open fields. Pathways lead through
the garden including a bridge that crosses a small stream. Adjoining the house is a yorkstone
terrace and gravelled seating area, interspersed with flowers and partially enclosed by stone
walling. Beyond the outbuildings there are two large greenhouses with peaches, nectarines, and
apricots and an adjoining area suitable as a vegetable garden. In all the garden extends to about 1.1
acres.
DIRECTIONS
From London, proceed south on the A3 to the Hindhead Tunnel
and continue for a further 10.7 miles. Take the slip road A272
signed Petersfield/Midhurst. At the roundabout take the first exit
