- Extend the life of your handpiece
1. Check the phaco tip before surgery
Make sure you are using the manufacturers tip. - Using the improper tip can lead to
the tip breakage.
Make sure the tip is tight - A loose tip can result in premature HP tip deterioration.
Make sure the tip is not bent or damaged - If so replace.
2. Avoid flash sterilization when possible … but if you do
flash sterilize
Items which are flash sterilized typically are used immediately.Attempting to
rapidly cool a handpiece when hot after steamed can lead to damaging internal
crystals or in some cases voiding the warranty ! Allow the handpiece to cool at
room temperature for 15-20 minutes. Cooling the handpiece quickly will cause the
crystal to be damaged, diminishing the life of your handpiece. Refrain from flash
sterilization when possible.
3. Flush both ports of phaco handpiece following a case
before sterilization
Check with the manufacturer recomendation if not specified do the following.
Immediately after surgery, flush a phaco handpiece with sterile deionized water.
Than air should be flushed through the irrigation and aspiration ports. Flushing the

THROUGH HANDPIECE TIP.
4. Wipe down handpiece & cord
Following a case with a clean, soft, lint free non-abrasive cloth. Rinse handpiece
with room temperature sterile deionized water.
5. Remove phaco tip with manufacturer wrench ONLY
Trying to remove the phaco tip with other wrenches may result in breaking the
phaco tip or handpiece. Take your time and get a manufacturers wrench before you
decide to remove the tip or sleeve. It will save you dollars and a headache.
6. Gently lay handpiece on top of loosley bundled cord
A tightly wound cord can prevent the handpiece from being sterilized properly.
Parts of the cord wouldn’t touch the steam. Unwinding of the cord needs to be
performed before the autoclaving process. By unwinding the cord you are
preventing wire breaks inside the sheathing and fraying of the handpiece cord.
7. Tap the handpiece plug after sterilization before
performing a case
After sterilization a handpiece connector may have water trapped inside. Tap the
handpiece plug on a clean sterilized surface to make sure all the water inside the
connector is out before performing a case.

- Periodically check your handpiece to make sure its in working condition
*Note use a tip for the handpiece *Should not be done in a surgical field 1. Make sure the handpiece is connected to system. Do not connect the lines.
2. Set system to phaco mode, set power to zero.
3. Linear function should be turned off.
4. Fill up cup ⅛ with water.
5. Place phaco tip in cup of water, make sure tip is fully submerged.
6. Step on foot switch make sure its all the way on the floor.
7. Turn phaco power up from zero. Watch aspiration port.
8. A working handpiece will make a distinct hissing noise at 100% power
9. Also it will cavitate water out of the aspiration port level from power levels
35-60%.

- A clean handpiece is a happy handpiece
What you need :
1 | 60 Ml syringe
Sterile Water (Check manufacturer)
1 | 20 Ml syringe
1 | Bowl
Detergent (Check manufacturer)
1 | Lint free cloth
1. Place tip into a bowl of detergent / water (check manufacturer they usually
suggest whether or not to use detergent, water, or another solution)
2. Attach syringe to the aspiration channel
3. Using the 60 ml syringe draw back 120 ml of cleaner through the aspiration
channel.
4. Detatch syringe from the aspiration channel & attach to the irrigation channel

channel
6. Empty syringes
7. Flush both channels with air make sure there is no remaining cleaner solution
8. Place clean handpiece into rinse tank to be manually cleaned
9. Manually dry handpiece w/ lint free cloth
10. If necessary clean the outside of the handpiece using hot water & a lint free
cloth
11. Dry channels with an air filled syringe following rinsing

deterioration & breaks in the seals allowing for moisture to enter

damage crystals
■ Let handpiece cool in room temperature for at least 15 minutes after
sterilization to prevent this
