Auburn Enlarged City School District Newsletter, May 2015
message from the superintendent
Constance D. Evelyn
Dear Community Members, The proposed 2015-‐16 budget is a re6lection of Auburn’s commitment to investing in our district to provide an education preparing our children for college and careers. It has been a privilege to partner with the Board of Education, our educators, parents, and extended community to build a budget that will support existing programs and continue to provide a pathway for innovative improvement efforts. High Quality Curriculum and Instruction We have maintained a critical focus on the implementation of high quality curriculum and instruction that meets the needs of all learners in our district. Some of the key elements of our work moving forward will increase curricular opportunities within our Project Lead the Way Course offerings in grades 9-‐12. Speci6ically, we have planned for additional STEM course offerings at the high school beginning with an introductory biomedical class next year. Also we’re excited to incorporate multiple pathways for early college and career experiences with the addition of the Pathways for Technology Early College High School (P-‐TECH), a grant funded program serving approximately 20-‐25 ninth grade students next year. The addition of these secondary course offerings that promote project-‐based learning will provide the habits of mind (i.e., critical thinking, problem solving) that our students will use to master the Common Core Learning Standards. Leadership and Innovation All members of the AECSD are recognized as educators that make valuable contributions toward achieving our goals. The structures that support leadership and innovation have involved educators working collaboratively to review and implement best practices around the use of balanced assessment to inform instruction, school-‐
based performance measures, and increasing the rigor and consistency of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math (STEAM) education. Other teams that have been working together include members of our Board of Education, parents, and community members. The proposed 2015-‐16 budget provides additional resources to support the implementation of our 6ive year technology plan that will critically advance access to learning any time, anywhere; a clear expectation of this generation of students. Systems Thinking We are committed to our responsibility to be 6iscally accountable. Our systemic approach to ensuring the alignment of resources with student achievement targets is central to achieving this outcome. The ongoing capital project work to improve safety and security of our buildings and greater capacity to deliver enhanced instructional programming are examples of this way of thinking. The proposed 2015-‐16 budget provides continued support to meet desirable class size(s), opportunities for full student participation in STEAM programming, and lays the groundwork to ease the district’s transition to increase student access to digital content. The annual budget hearing will be held on May 12, 2015, at 7:00p.m. in the library at Auburn High School. All residents will have the opportunity to vote on May 19th. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you’re not sure where to vote, please call 255-8850 or 255-8822. 2

Special Social Studies Class at Auburn Junior High
Marion Blumenthal Lazan spoke to
students at Auburn Junior High about her
family’s six years of capture in camp BergenBelsen in Nazi Germany. She told a story of
horror and hardship, and how their inner
strength, attitude toward life, courage, hope,
and will to live helped them survive. Her
messages to students: Never give up hope.
Our mind lets us decide between good and
evil. Be kind to one another. Use social media

She wished everyone a happy, healthy future in a world of love and peace. We are the last

from happening again.

NEWS from Herman Ave. elementary School
By Jessica Rice, Art Teacher
Herman Avenue Elementary School
Students will be taking part in a STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) project in May and
June. Interdisciplinary/cross-curricular lessons with math,
science, language arts & art does provide a meaningful way in
which students can use knowledge learned in multiple subject
areas in school to apply knowledge as well as looking locally at
Owasco Lake and its' environmental problems. These activities
created by Kara Sobus (5th grade Herman), Sharon Franchina
(5th grade Herman) and Jessica Rice (Art Herman) designed
lessons to help students build background knowledge about
Owasco Lake. These activities would also be used to motivate
students to learn about the body of water found in their
community. In order to get the most out of this project-based
learning opportunity, the students need to have some
experience with the topic. The areas are Owasco Lake
Physical Features, Owasco Lake Today, Owasco Lake
Watershed Management Plan, and Nuisance and Invasive
Species. These lesson attributes will help students to recognize
and act on responsibilities as a citizen, as well as seeing
oneself and one's community, within the state, nation, and
world.

NEWS from owasco elementary school
By Amy Avino Bryan, Owasco Elementary School
Owasco Elementary School recently had four teams participate in the
Regional Odyssey of the Mind Competition, at Cayuga BOCES in March,
with a total of five teams participating in this program during the school
year. Of these teams, two advanced to the State competition on April 11 at the
University of Binghamton. Owasco is proud of its competitors and the terrific
parent coaches that we've been lucky to have over the years. Way to go, Owls!
Owasco Elementary School recently entered the Woodman
Insurance Company’s, “I Love America” video contest. This video
was a group effort. Students in grades 3rd-6th read essays that they
had written for classroom social studies projects, including students
Connor Mahunik, Jack Bennink, Abby Izzo, and Brooke McCarthy.
Auburn’s AV director, Chris Tesorio, filmed these students in a
variety of locations around the building, and compiled it for us. Kudos to these
students and teachers for all that was taught and learned in this heartfelt video.

CLUB
On Wednesday, March 11th, thirty-eight first and second grade students
began participating in Seward's new Lego Club. The mission is to support
the STEAM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)
and to foster a creative and collaborative enrichment opportunity.
Michael Warter, Jared Georgi, and Sean DeRosa organized the club's start
up by partnering with William H. Seward's PTA, Majorpalooza, Auburn
Police Department, Cayuga Police Benevolent Association, Wegmans,
Walmart, and private donations to provide Legos, mentors and snacks.
On behalf of the entire Seward Community, we would like to thank
officers Warter, Georgi, and DeRosa.

NEWS from owasco elementary School
Owasco Elementary second-grade students spent a
month reading picture books that had received the
Caldecott Medal or designation as Caldecott honor
books, an award given to the best picture books
published in the U.S. each year. Students who
completed three book reports on past Caldecott
winners took part in the library's annual Caldecott
Party, which featured games based on each book
featured in Owasco's own Mock Caldecott contest.
With volunteers and book-themed snacks provided by
the Owasco Parents' Team, students played a board
game based on one nominated book; had a moving-day
themed race to go with another; and had to dig for
“treasure” by searching in a giant mound of Easter
grass to accompany the theme of the third nominated
book. Each of the elementary libraries in the AECSD
celebrate the Caldecott medal by holding a mock
Caldecott vote and party each year.
