PREFACE
'Art' education has unique significance at different levels of
school education. This subject is compulsory in primary education
from Std. I to Std. VIII, at secondary level under work education
and at higher secondary level this subject is optional.
Drawing Grade Examinations have been commenced in 1880
in old Mumbai State. Since beginning these examinations are
conducted in Maharashtra State and in other parts of India. The
States, where these examinations have been commenced, later
on started their own independent examinations based on the
method of examination in the Mumbai State. Since 1965 these
examinations, which are conducted by Directorate of Art of
Maharashtra State, are also conducted in Goa, Rajasthan,
Chattisgad, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh etc. alongwith
Maharashtra State.
At present these examinations have acquired great popularity,
which are prominently intended for school-going students.
It is expected to make corroboration about various issues
such as creation of taste for art and thereby development of
aesthetic attitude among students, creation of ability to
appreciate and evaluate arts, development of creative qualities,
fostering of art culture as well as Indian art traditions, creation
of consciousness-awareness about preservation of environment,
to be proud about enriched and all-inclusive artistic, cultural
and social heritage of the country.
Today the curriculum of said examinations is being
restructured keeping in mind the objectives of enhancement of
current educational attitude and significance of art education in
it, creation of harmony owing to said examinations, creation of
liking for art among students and thereby maximum possible
increase in proportion of students appearing for said
examinations.
Since 'Curriculum' plays important role in achievement of
expected personality development from the education,
'Curriculum' is considered as integral part of quality of education.
Hence, creation of high-class curriculum becomes important
step towards the path of achievement of quality.

According to current prevailing method 1) Still-life, 2)
Landscape (natural objects), 3) Memory Drawing, 4) Design, 5)
Free-hand drawing, 6) Plane Geometry (Elementary) and Solid
Geometry and Lettering (Intermediate) are the six subjects
Planned for Elementary and Intermediate Examinations. Both
of these examinations are completed within the period of five
days. Without changing basic aim and core of Grade Examinations
and taking into consideration total period required for
examination and interest of the students 'Curriculum and plan
of examination method' are restructured as follows.
While restructuring 'Curriculum' and 'Examination method'
of said examinations (1) Object Drawing, (2) Memory Drawing.
(3) Design, (4) Plane Geometry and Lettering are the four subjects.
which have been fixed for Elementary Examination and (1) Still
Life, (2) Memory Drawing, (3) Design (4) Plane Geometry, Solid
Geometry and Lettering are the four subjects, which have been
fixed for Intermediate Examination.
According to restructured curriculum, instead of earlier Still
Life, the subject 'Object Drawing' has been included for
Elementary Examination. It is expected to sketch elements
created by nature alongwith man-made objects, coloring with
shadow and light and graphic picture from the subjects 'Object
Drawing of Elementary Examination' and 'Still Life' from
Intermediate Examination. Hence study of the subject Landscape
is being conducted through these subjects, consequently the
subject 'Landscape' is adjusted in 'Object Drawing and Still Life'
respectively. Moreover figurative shapes and constructions such
as leaves, flowers, animals, birds are practiced more and more
in Design. Owing to said adjustment, changes have been proposed
according to needs in the pattern of Object Drawing, Still Life,
Design etc. and also in the pattern of other subjects. Owing to
said changes, papers of four subjects have been set for each
examination of Grade Examination and both of these
examinations will be completed within total period of four days.
Attempts are being made to establish coordination between
aims of curriculum of Grade Examinations, knowledge-based
attitude in art education and curriculum at different levels in
school education in the said restructured curriculum and
examination method.

The changes in curriculum have been made focusing on the
students. Alongwith traditional methods of art expression, use
of novel color medium and technique and coloring equipment
available at local area and passion of students have been given
importance. As a result of this, students will get more and more
scope for their free expression and creativity and they will also
get opportunity for novel creation, moreover they will get
encouragement for enhancement of artistic latent qualities.
Owing to said changes student will not feel tension or burden
of the examination and more and more students will be
encouraged to undertake said examinations.
Mainly school students from Std. VII to Std. XII are involved
in Grade Drawing Examinations. In spite of this, college or
private students can also appear externally for said
examinations.
Grade Drawing Examination is considered as necessary for
admission to higher studies in the drawing subject. Hence, the
utility of said examinations is not restricted to the field of art
education but art education is important for creative creativity
in changing modern and technological era. Skill and neatness is
created in the students from this. Professionalism in technical
and related fields requires beauty sensitivity and creative
creation and assimilation of basic drawing skills. Thus, experience
shows that Grade Drawing Examinations are extremely useful
for students desired to take admission in technical, engineering,
medical courses, interior decoration, animation, dress designing,
draftsman surveyor courses applied art courses and also for
trainees in the Teacher Education Colleges completing D.T.Ed.
course and students undertaking other subjects in the life.
Moreover, students successfully passing the examinations with
this curriculum are given preference in the admission process
of many other courses.
The curriculum corroborating needs, hopes and aspirations
of society , scientific progress, social and political events,
educational progress as well as policies such as environmental
protection, village sanitation, women's empowerment,
constitutional responsibilities• and values such as secularism
(equality of all religions), national unity, neatness should be
time-consistent and dynamic. Hence, many times changes in
Government Grade Drawing Examinations, Restructured Curriculum, 2015
(Seven)
curriculum are expected according to circumstances. Curriculum
is restructured taking into consideration some important
challenges and expectations.
The committee of senior and experienced art teachers enriched
with art teaching experience in various region of Maharashtra
as well as representatives of administration have restructured
the curriculum and prepared revised curriculum. After
preparation the curriculum has been reviewed through art
teachers of all departments throughout the state and their
remarks have been sought. Taking into consideration all issues
the formation of revised curriculum has been finalized.
Directorate of Arts expresses its gratitude to Art Examination
Committee for extending valuable cooperation in the formation
of revised curriculum. Special thanks are given to those, who
have sent their remarks.
In the current highly dynamic and modern technology era,
setting of any curriculum cannot be final. According
circumstances and time proper changes, reforms should be
introduced in it. Directorate of Arts will always takes into
consideration this need and wholeheartedly greet good and
studious remarks and suggestions in this regard from art
education experts, education experts, artists, art connoisseur
and art teachers.

Guidelines for Restructured curri
Guidelines for preparation of examinee~Uig to
restructured curriculum of Grade Examinations are as follows.
According to existing method both Elementary and
Intermediate laminations are completed within the period of
five days. Moreover, for this examination six subjects viz. 1) Still
life, 2) Landscape, 3) Memory Drawing, 4) Design, 5) Free-hand
drawing, 6) Plane Geometry (Elementary) and Solid Geometry
and Lettering (Intermediate) were planned
In view of creation of harmony between current educational
vision and changes consistent with time, instead of tension or
burden of examination creation of liking of art among examinees,
maximum possible increase in the proportion of students
appearing for the examin ation, curriculum of Grade examinations
has been restructured..
Without changing basic aim and core of Grade 'Examinations
and changing number of subjects and total period required for
examination consistent with time 'Curriculum and plan of
examination method' have restructured.
According to plan of restructured curriculum and examination
method, it has been planned in restructured curriculum to teach
four subjects viz. (1) Object Drawing/Still life, (2) Memory Drawing,
3) Design, (4) Plane Geometry/Solid Geometry and Lettering
with restructured curriculum and guidelines. Owing to said
changes papers of only four subjects have been kept for each
examination of Grade Examinations. Hence, both examinations
can be completed within the period of four days (two days for
each examination).
• Object Drawing
Instead of previous subject Still life, the subject Object Drawing
is included in the restructured curriculum. For object drawing,
object elements are kept before examinee, which include elements
created by nature along with man-made objects.
It is expected that examinee according to his/her own liking
should sketch object group put before him/her harmoniously and
proportionately in the sufficiently large size matching with size

of paper and make graphic delineation of color, shadow
differentiation, texture etc. on the object element.
Examinees are granted the freedom to use different color
mediums separately or in combined manner for painting of drawing.
Stifi - life Pattern of the subject Still life in the Intermediate Examination
is kept as before. While drawing Still life object group kept
before examinee is not only object group but it is spirit stabilized
at one place. In view of this, the aim should be demonstration
of live beauty through sketching of object group, construction
and painting. Attractive expression of shape, lines, color shades,
texture, shadow and light etc. should be given importance in
Still life. While drawing still life of object group, if need emerges
from point of view of drawing beauty, complete freedom is granted
to make the sketch and paint it with minor changes.
Objects used in the object group should be of attractive color

Subject and content presentation should be given more preference
in drawing than proportionality. Freedom of use of color should
be granted. In this case color pencils, wax,, crayons, pastels,
available colors in surrounding area, water color can be used
separately or in combined manner.
For intermediate Examination - construction according to
subject, color arrangement, extension of imagination, shadow
and light and creation of texture should be used in the drawing.
Proportionality, neatness and perspective should also have
significance in the drawing. While making construction of
drawing pertinent, main shape and background of drawing should
have significance. Complete painting of drawing is expected.
• Design
In this subject one is asked to use some shapes to create
beauty in the object and basic shape. In this case one is expected
to make decoration (Design) by proper use of different types of

for design. For this purpose, one should use basic principles of
design for the practice. Study of principles such as repetition,
diversity, contradiction, excretion, rhythm, balance and different
tones is expected in this subject.
Earlier only construction of geometrical shapes was studied
for Elementary Examination. However, in restructured
curriculum construction of some element shapes in outer
geometrical shapes is expected. For example, design can be
made in given geometrical outer shape from element shapes
such as lines, triangles, quadrangle, square, circles, semi-circles,
leaves, flowers, fruits, birds. Design can be made by proportionate
or disproportionate method. Moreover, geometrical, natural,
figurative or abstract shapes can be used for designing.
Government Grade Drawing Examinations, Restructured Curriculum, 2015
IS]
For said examination, element shapes such as saucer, plate,
tile, semi-circular manually operated fan, bag, designing in
square or hexagon, mat, seats on floor can be used for practice.
For Intermediate Examination, while making design, outer
shape can be given for particular elements and design can be
made ingeniously using natural, figurative or abstract shapes of
elements such as different geometrical shapes, leaves, flowers,
birds, fishes, butterflies, animals in this outer shapes. Sound
tone consistent with drawing subject should be used for painting
of design. In order to enhance the beauty and attractiveness of
design, one can create texture using different types of techniques.

border, fabric, purse, handkerchief, T.V. cover, pillow cover, teeshirt, kite, lamp shade, light hung aloft in outer shape for practice.
* Plane Geometry
Geometrical constructions to be studied for Elementary and
Intermediate Examinations are given in detail in curriculum.
Questions will be asked based on constructions mentioned in it.
While sketching geometrical figures, one should pay special
attention to neatness and meticulousness. Habit of making bold
intangible (blurred) lines and required other lines should be
created in the students. Construction lines should not be erased,
but they should be kept intact.
* Solid Geometry
Students should be explained visionary aspect of following:
How solid figures suggested in curriculum of Intermediate
Examination can be sketched in straight , vertical position, how
said solid figure will appear from above, on seeing laterally?.
Students should have practice of drawing plan and elevation
of said objects. Sketches of elevation or plan of these objects
