CAMS visits Canberra and political friends of
motor sport in positive push for more funding
In March, CAMS visited Canberra to continue promoting the cause
of motor sport by meeting with a number of Senators and Members
of Parliament.
Coordinated by Senator for the ACT, The Hon. Kate Lundy, CAMS
Chief Executive Officer Eugene Arocca attended the gathering of
the Parliamentary Friends of Motoring group at Parliament House
in Canberra, which carried the theme of ‘celebrating motor sport’.
In a presentation made to an influential audience, Arocca outlined
the positive growth, expansion and future direction of CAMS as
the national authority of four wheel motor sport in Australia. The
meeting also included a presentation by Colin Trinder on the
benefits of the World Rally Championship’s Rally Australia as a
major sporting and tourism event.
Arocca stated: “This is the most effective way for CAMS to inform
key decision makers about the significance of motor sport in this
country… to come here to Canberra and address a group of
parliamentarians and in particular advise them of the role that CAMS
plays in developing and promoting motor sport is very important.”
Attended by Fiona Scott MP, Senator Ricky Muir and Senator Kate
Lundy among others, Arocca was able to deliver the message on
behalf of all in Australian motor sport, calling for more support for
the industry.
“This administration is committed to do everything possible to
promote this wonderful sport and deliver a clear message about
the economic and sporting significance of motor sport. We will
seize every opportunity to tell our story to Governments across
the country and we are now doing this regularly for the benefit of
our members. We need a united front for this to achieve the best
possible results in terms of better and improved funding at all levels
of Government and today is about CAMS taking to power brokers
the information they need in order to make informed decisions in
this regard,” Arocca said.
Senator Lundy believes the CAMS message is getting through as a
result of this approach by CAMS.
“To have the CEO of CAMS, Eugene Arocca, here presenting in
such an effective way to a room full of MPs and Senators, not only
about the value of Australian motor sport to our economy but the
dimension of what it would be like… speculating about what an
increased investment, particularly in development pathways and
other facilities, what that could do to drive event tourism, what that
could do to drive interest in the sport… to focus on motor sport
generally,” Senator Lundy said.
Australia’s motor racing regulator says the sport deserves more
funding from government and support from the corporate sector
after a report showed motor sport contributes $2.7 billion to the
Australian economy annually.
In 2014 CAMS released an Ernst & Young report showing motor
sport generated $2.7 billion in direct industry output, including $1.2
billion in direct value added to the economy, in 2013.
The report, commissioned by CAMS, also said more than 150,000
people regularly participate in motor racing. It also found motor
racing accounted for 16,181 direct jobs.
Senator Ricky Muir believes the presentation in Canberra, in light
of the report produced by CAMS, has been incredibly important.
“It’s absolutely fantastic that CAMS has gone to so much effort to
push their cause, I think it’s absolutely brilliant and I really do hope
to see motor sport continue to flourish in the future.”
Senator Lundy admits the CAMS E&Y report has helped the cause.
“You can’t make good policy without good information and what
CAMS has provided through the Ernst & Young report is good
information, good data… Up until now we haven’t had good
enough information about how we can grow our economy on the
back of motor sport and motor sport related events and growing
grass roots participation.”
Despite the size of the sport and the international success of
Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo, motor racing receives only
$340,000 in annual high performance and development funding
from the Australian Sports Commission.
Arocca believes government authorities needed to step up and
provide more funding for motor racing, including a CAMS Centre of
Excellence that would cost close to $6 million.
“Ideally, we would love to build one. We feel Australia deserves a
motor sport base, a training facility for all. The centre could also be
used as a training base for competitors from other countries, with a
focus on the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region, particularly given the
increasing popularity of motor sport in India and China.”
“We have to continue to strive and drive CAMS and Australian
motor sport forward… to do nothing is not an option for me,”
Arocca said.

Spectators at the Australian Grand Prix discover how to get started
in motor sport, and existing members get in touch with CAMS staff.
For Arocca, the move has been a success as thousands of people
across Australia are better informed and aware of what CAMS
does in its role as administrator, developer, promoter and regulator
of four wheeled motor sport in Australia.
“We have had more officials sign up, more children come and see
us, touch the cars that are on display, sit in the U Race It simulators
we have. For me it’s a no-brainer, we have to get out there and
make sure, at the high visibility events, that CAMS is present.”
Fans got up close and personal with the CAMS Jayco Australian
Formula 4 Championship car which was on display, just as it was
at the opening V8 Supercars Championship round of 2015 at the
Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.
As part of the aim to increase its presence at motor sport events,
CAMS was at the recent Australian Grand Prix in order to better
inform Australian motor sport fans and enthusiasts about motor
sport.
The CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship starts in
2015, bringing about an exciting an exciting new chapter in the
history of Australian motor sport.
“For us it’s about taking motor sport to the Mums and Dads with
their kids and have them experience the car up close and personal.”
Various car clubs had their promotional material on display and
there was plenty of interest generated in grass roots motor sport.
“I think every little bit of motor sport that CAMS can bring to the
public is a win in my view,” Arocca said.
CAMS’ vision is to have more people enjoying more motor sport,
so information about how to get involved in motor sport, be it as a
competitor or official, is a key reason for this CAMS venture.
Inspired by the surroundings… fans both young and old flocked
to the marquee over the weekend to set their best lap times of the
Albert Park track on the U Race It simulators. Intense competition
was had with many quick times set over the weekend. Younger
fans also had the chance to unleash their inner Daniel Ricciardo on
the slot cars.
CAMS Chief Executive Officer Eugene Arocca believes it’s the duty
of CAMS to better promote motor sport and taking information to
motor sport venues and fans at events has been seen as important
move in making that occur.
“As a promoter of motor sport in the country, in terms of young
people and developing the sport, we weren’t at tracks and one of
the first things I realised when I became CEO is that you need to
be present at the main events and for me the Clipsal 500, Bathurst
1000 and the Australian Grand Prix are the main events. So we
decided that we would put up a display tent and the results so far
have been outstanding,” Arocca said.
Karting Australia were also on hand with several karts on display
to cater to entry level motor sport participants of all ages.

The 31st Australian Grand Prix has
successfully been run and won with nearly
1000 CAMS Officials and CAMS staff
working together to put on the four day
event at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit.
Michael Smith, CAMS General Manager of
Motor Sport, thanked all for their exemplary
service once again.
“I took a walk around throughout some of
the various sectors of the circuit, it certainly
shows why Australian officials are held in
such high regard, the professionalism and
appearance is yet again exemplary.”
Of the 1000 personnel, 78 were
Internationals, coming from 17 countries.
“We know that this group of people are the
best in the world and that’s the reason why
we get to do what we do and travel overseas
to do what we do; and quite frankly this
event wouldn’t happen without them - the
internationals. They’re just such a great
group of people; and it’s just great to be a
part of the team that delivers the best Grand
Prix in the world,” Smith said.
This is the twentieth year the AGP has been
at Albert Park, and there were eleven years
before that in Adelaide. Smith said it just
shows how much commitment the marshals
have got to the event and how much
ownership they feel for the Grand Prix.
“We feel like we’re among friends. It’s great
that so many of them have done all the
races, and I feel lucky to be one of them.
I’ve worked all the Australian Formula One
races, and the first Melbourne AGP was my
first ‘Start’ in 1996.”
“I always feel the same way. I was looking
forward to this twentieth year at Melbourne.
It felt a bit special this year - a special
landmark. I think the circuit looks better than
ever. It’s come together quite well. We get a
nice reception from everyone when we do
our inspection, and I look forward to that. It’s
a nice feeling, almost as like being home.”
This year’s events saw to some transition
among the ranks with Alan O’Dea from
Adelaide retired, after 30 years as a Flag
Marshal, the last few years as one of the
Chief Marshals. Two new Chiefs were added
to the team this year; Wayne Oliver from the
Northern Territory and George Chrobak from
New South Wales.
Also, Ewan Cole announced that he was
stepping down as Chief Scrutineer at the
conclusion of the 2015 event.
A recipient of the 2013 FIA Best Scrutineer
award, congratulations go to Ewan, and
every other Official, for a job well done!
FIA F1 Race Director Charlie Whiting, said
he enjoyed the trip to Melbourne immensely
and always enjoys coming to Australia and
working with CAMS Officials.

As the 2015 Australian Grand Prix celebrated its twentieth running in
Albert Park, the event also marked 20 years of service for CAMS Officials.
CAMS is proud to continue its work with the Australian Grand
Prix Corporation with the assistance of 1,000 CAMS Officials and
Volunteers to ensure the success and safety of the world renowned
Grand Prix.
Our officials are recognised as among the best in the world and for
some, this year’s event made for a milestone moment.
Several CAMS Officials were taking part in their 20th FIA Formula
One Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park and CAMS thought
it worthwhile to tell the stories of some who have achieved the
milestone.

since Melbourne became host in 1996,
and started his career as a CAMS Official
in Newcastle in 1975.
After twenty consecutive Australian
Grands Prix for Jones, the silver level
official’s enthusiasm remains as high as
his debut race in 1996.

Penrite Oil shows its support at the Australian Grand Prix as the
sponsor of the popular Heritage Touring Cars support race.
While Formula 1® made up a large portion of the billing at the 2015
Rolex Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix, the gathering of support
categories the Albert Park event hosts is the envy of the world.
CAMS corporate partner Penrite Oil has continued its support
for Australian grass roots motor sport, sponsoring the Heritage
Touring Cars grid.
“What we’ve done is sponsored the windscreens and side of the
cars, hopefully a lot of those competitors are using Penrite! I hope
a few of them are,” said Penrite General Manager Toby Dymond.
“We’ve been involved for the last three years. We’ve been doing
that now since 2012 and since our association with CAMS has
grown, we’ve been getting more involved with the F1.”
Neville Butler, competing in the #111 ex-Gary Wilmington XD Group
C Falcon, was thankful for the supporting from Penrite.
“We run Penrite Oil. We have their gearbox oil, their diff oil and their
engine oil,” said Butler.
“It really fits in with our vintage of car and the sorts of things we do.
Fantastic to have Penrite onboard and I hope we can continue to
have them onboard in the future. It’ll be wonderful.”
The Heritage Touring Cars were a popular category with the crowd
at the Australian Grand Prix, and a much welcome fixture to the
field of support categories.
“Great crowd, beautiful weather, brilliant track, all the officials are
fantastic, so yeah, having a great time! Of course with all my 39
other mates out there on the track, it’s really good fun,” said Butler.
Having recently signed with the newly formed CAMS Jayco
Australian Formula 4 Championship, Penrite was pleased to
finally see the Formula 4 car and is excited about the prospect in
collaborating with the category.
“I’m really impressed with it actually! I know the guys are starting to
test the car…We’re testing out a few oils with Cameron [McConville]
and the team. We’re excited and it’s going to look fantastic,” said
Dymond.
For Dymond, he spoke of the value that motor sport across all
levels brought to his business and ultimately back into the sport
itself.
“We’ve got a three tier strategy; we’re doing grass roots motor
sport, a lot of association with all the car clubs as well, obviously
with V8s and the Formula 4 championship starting in July and F1.”
“For us, we want to be involved in each tier of the racing sector,”
said Dymond.

Taking time out from a busy schedule in the lead up to the FIA
Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australian
Formula One star driver Daniel Ricciardo visited the CAMS display
at the Grand Prix.
A CAMS Ambassador, Ricciardo gave the organisation his seal of
approval for the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship
starting in 2015. Ricciardo personally signed the car that features
in the new open wheel development pathway that will create
Australian motor sport history when it begins in Townsville in July.
“It would be good definitely. Let’s just give me a few more years!”
“It would be great to have another Aussie to come out on the grid
with me and maybe take a bit of a load off my shoulders…”
“Mark Webber inspired me to make the jump to Europe and make
that happen, and if I can inspire the next generation, then that’s
great and I think this is a step towards that.”
Ricciardo stated he was pleased with the look of the new open
wheel racing machine and what the CAMS Jayco Australian
Formula 4 Championship brings to Australia and young aspiring
drivers.
“It looks good. Things are going in the right direction with wings
and slicks. It’s obviously what’s going towards what’s happening
in Europe. I think for kids coming out of karts it’s a really good
category,” Ricciardo said.
“It’s not too big and overwhelming. A kid can easily jump in it and
have some fun straight away.”
After signing the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 racing car,
Ricciardo admitted he will be watching when the new championship
starts in July, albeit from afar during his travels with Formula One.
“I will. There’s a few things I am keeping up with this year but I
will definitely see how this is going and try to obviously get some
Aussies making their way over to Europe eventually… see how we
go.”
As CAMS looks to unearth the next Ricciardo or Indycar Champion
Will Power through the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4
Championship and driver development program, the Formula One
star joked he’s not too keen on being replaced just yet. The ever
smiling and jovial Aussie said he could do with some help if his
popularity at Albert Park is anything to go by.

Interest continues from leading Australian motor sport outfits ahead of the first
round of the 2015 CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship in July.
Leading Carrera Cup outfit McElrea Racing plans to create a multitier development pathway for young drivers by adding a CAMS
Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship team to its stable.
Team owner Andy McElrea has targeted a three-car attack on the
new championship.
Three teams – AGI Sport, Team BRM and DREAM Motorsport
– have currently committed to the open-wheel class, for which
CAMS has purchased 20 cars from manufacturer Mygale.
McElrea says that adding a Formula 4 program will enable his
Queensland-based operation to take youngsters from karts and
prepare them for seats in the team’s Porsche stable.
“I’ve spent a lot of time around go-kart tracks in the last couple
of years and have been overwhelmed by the amount of talent in
Australian karting,” McElrea said.
The team currently runs two cars in the Carrera Cup and five in
the second-tier GT3 Cup Challenge, as well as three Australian GT
Championship entries.
“Being a Carrera Cup team, we really have no stepping stone from
go-karting to what we do, both for Australian and Asian kids.
“Formula 4 makes perfect sense for what we want to do and we’re
very keen to get our teeth into it.
“We’ve been working closely with Cam McConville (CAMS’ Formula
4 category manager) who has been great with communication with
some of the interested parties,” he added.
“We’re very focussed on making it happen and putting three cars
on the grid by Townsville.”
McElrea’s current Carrera Cup line-up is spearheaded by 19-yearold Matt Campbell, who won Class B of the GT3 Cup Challenge
with the team last year.
Campbell and long-time McElrea driver Warren Luff have been
named as driver coaches for the team’s planned foray into F4.
“But for us it’s not so much about the financial side, it’s about
the strategy of introducing new drivers to our team who we can
potentially have on board for three or four years.
“We can take them into F4 and then all the way through GT3 Cup
Challenge and the Carrera Cup.”

Joseph (Joey) Mawson will take part in the forthcoming inaugural
2015 German ADAC Formula 4 Championship with the support of
the Foundation.

patrons Alan Jones, Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo have

A talented racer from Sydney, Mawson has signed with Dutch
racing team Van Amersfoort Racing as its first ever Australian driver.
Joey Mawson stood out in karting at an early age. He won three
Australian championships, a round of the CIK-FIA U18 World
Championship and finished second in the Rotax Junior Max Grand
Finals, before moving to Europe to boost his racing career.
CAMS Foundation Chairman Geoff Morgan stated: “The Foundation
is very pleased to be supporting Joey as he embarks on this latest
and, no doubt, most important step in his motor sport career. The
Foundation has provided a high level of support in this instance in
order to see this undisputed talent stay in Europe where we are
confident he can realise his full potential.”
“We fully support the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4
Championship starting this year, but with Joey having spent the
previous two years in Europe establishing relationships there we felt
it most advantageous to take this next step. We certainly wish him
well in this exciting opportunity,” Morgan said.
Eighteen year old Mawson, said he wanted to thank the CAMS
Foundation and its members for making his European charge
possible.
“Geoff Morgan and all from the CAMS Foundation have been very
supportive and I can’t thank the very generous supporters and
members of the Foundation enough. I look forward to getting to
Germany and doing the CAMS Foundation and myself proud with
some great results,” Mawson said.
Mawson also said he was excited to be joining his new team and
team-mates being 15 year old Mick Schumacher, the son of seventime Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher and 15
year old Harri Newey, son of Adrian Newey, Red Bull Formula 1
Technical Director.
Joey impressed in his single seater rookie season by securing 8
podium finishes, including 3 wins, 3 pole positions and 3 fastest
lap times in the French Formula 4 championship 2014. Despite
missing the last 3 races due to technical and mechanical problems
with his car, Joey ended 4th in the final championship standings in
his first season.
In order to be fully prepared Joey Mawson will run an extensive
testing program with Van Amersfoort Racing to learn about the
car and become familiar with his new team. The season of the
debuting German ADAC Formula 4 Championship kicks off in the
last week of April at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben. The calendar
also contains meetings at the Formula 1 circuits Red Bull Ring in
Austria and Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

Australian drivers on their way to higher levels and aspiring to make
their motor sport dreams come true.

working group to undertake a review of Australian motor racing.
The newly formed Australian Motor Racing Commission (AMRC)
Strategic Working Group has been charged with the responsibility.
This working group of AMRC Commissioners, is specifically
charged with the strategic planning and development of the Race
discipline, along with assisting in the ongoing management of
motor racing activities conducted within the territory of CAMS.

COMMISSIONERS
FOR 2015
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport has appointed
Commissioners for 2015 and beyond.
Under recent changes to the Standing Orders, CAMS
Commissioners are now appointed for three year terms, however,
initially there must be a transition requiring staggered renewal dates
of 1, 2 or 3 years before consideration for reappointment. This is
necessary to avoid all the Commission appointments lapsing at the
same time. In order to achieve this result, a rotation schedule for
reappointment will be determined by each of the Commissions.
Commissions play an extremely important role for CAMS in
performing its role of National Sporting Authority (ASN) for motor
sport in Australia as delegated by the Federation Internationale
de’l Automobile (FIA). As direct delegates of the CAMS Board,
Commissions are entrusted with the responsibility of providing high
level strategic support to the CAMS administration in achieving the
objectives set out in the 2014 – 2016 Strategic Plan.

Australian Formula 4 Championship and Australian Kart Championship.

Australian Kart Championship that kicks off April 3-5 in Melbourne.

CHAMPIONSHIP SET
TO BECOME RICHEST
IN HISTORY
The 2015 Australian Kart Championship is set to become the
richest in Australian karting history with more than $110,000 in
prizes up for grabs.
Among this prize pool are 11 opportunities to compete in overseas
karting events and seven new engines.
Australia’s representatives at the 2016 CIK-FIA Winter Cup in Italy
will be the Champions in each of the KZ2, KF3 and KA TaG classes.
Drivers in the KF2 class will be vying for more than $8,000 in cash
and prizes across the five rounds of the Championship.
“Since announcing the format of the Australian Kart Championship
last year we’ve been working very hard on ensuring that it not
only provides the best platform for Australian karting in terms of
competition but also some great opportunities and rewards for our
drivers,” said Karting Australia Chairman Mick Doohan.
The KA12 Champion and Runner-up will each receive an entry and
travel costs to compete in the 2016 Vortex Rok International in Italy.
“When you look at the prize pool that has been established it is
undoubtedly the most significant across the board of classes that
we’ve ever seen here in Australia.
In the IAME-powered classes (KA Junior, KA1 and X30) both the
Champion and Runner-up will receive an Arrive and Drive package
to the 2016 IAME International Final. The Champion in each of
these classes will also receive a $1,500 travel allowance.
“The opportunities presented are second to none and I look
forward to see Australia’s best competitors battle it out for the right
to become National Champion throughout the year.”

DS3 has rewarded him with victory at the 2015 Quit Forest Rally.
Eli Evans consistent performance on his debut weekend in the
Citroen DS3 has rewarded him with victory at the 2015 Quit Forest
Rally. Molly Taylor, fresh off her inaugural Heat win on Saturday’s
competition, claimed second spot on the podium ahead of a hard
charging Simon Evans in third.
“It was good today, much better than yesterday, no issues at all,”
said Eli at the finish in Nannup.
“It’s a big relief to get this result and the car never let me down. The
longer I drove it this weekend the more and more comfortable I felt,
and that resulted in more speed.”
The result is remarkable in itself after Eli was slowed on Saturday
morning’s stages after running heavily off the road on only the
second forestry stage, and then driving for five kilometres with a
flat tyre on the very next stage.
“This is a tough sport and I think our fortunes yesterday compared
to today prove that you can never give up. You can be up one
minute and down the very next,” said Eli’s co-driver Glen Weston.
The win, which came on Eli’s very first weekend driving for Team
Citroen Australia, was a hard fought affair after almost zero testing
prior to the start of the event.
“It’s a very special feeling to win for a new team, it feels just like when
I took my first win for Honda. The team have worked incredibly hard
in the pre-season, and again this weekend, so it’s a huge relief to
be in the fight and take the win. I’m so proud of the work Glen
(Weston) and I did this weekend,” added Eli.
For second placed Molly she was starting to find the limit of the
Renault Clio. “It’s a really aggressive car, you have to give it a lot of
revs and things like the gear change, with the flat cut, you have to
be quite aggressive with and use some force,” she said.
“I’ve had a great weekend! My first rally in this car, my first rally
with Bill (Hayes, co-driver), just fantastic. I have so many people to
thank and this hopefully pays back their support.”
For veteran navigator Bill Hayes he was blown away by Molly’s
speed and maturity. “Absolutely amazing from the very first stage
of the weekend. Molly stays so calm and collected and her speed
is just incredible.”
Mick Patton was able to maintain his solid pace in his Mitsubishi
Lancer Evo X to claim maximum points in the National 4WD’s,
ahead of Doug Tostevin’s Subaru Impreza and Justin Dowel’s
repaired Mitsubishi Lancer.
“I had a pretty strict plan this weekend and my co-driver Bernie
(Webb) definitely kept reminding to stay in check. I’m stoked,
absolutely stoked. I think the last couple of year’s in the (front-wheel
drive) Polo has definitely helped my driving style,” said Patton.
Consistency over the weekend allowed local Subaru driver Brad
Markovic to claim second outright in the 4WD’s with Scott McKenzie
third. “It’s been one of those days today but we got through and
persevered,” said Markovic.
The Classics was looking to be a fairly straightforward affair for Neal
Bates, until he suffered two rear punctures this morning and then
the team noticed the rear diff housing was cracked. A quick weld
job in service had Bates back up and running, and he didn’t slow
for a moment, despite the rear axle crabbing on the right corner.
“We felt it at wasn’t quite right,” said Bates of the diff. “But
sometimes as a driver it’s best not to know how bad something is
and just drive on.”
Bates eventual margin over five minutes to the identical Toyota
Celica of Clay Badenoch, with Trevor Stilling settling further back
in third.
The East Coast Bullbars Australian Rally Championship takes a
six week break before the next Round, the National Capital Rally
in Canberra, on the 15th to 17th May where the Outright 2WD,
National 4WD and Classics will be joined by the Side-by-Side’s
from Polaris and Can-Am.

Finke Legends Dinner to celebrate
the achievements of past winners
The Finke Desert Race Club has announced that tickets for the
Finke Legends Dinner to be held on Thursday 4th June during
Finke week are on on sale on Monday 30th March.
The dinner will celebrate the achievements of past winners, both
car and bike and acknowledge the significant efforts of those who
have put this event on the national sporting calendar.
“This will be the event to be part of at this year’s Finke” said Antony
Yoffa, President of the Finke Desert Race Club. “Held the night after
Finke Family night* and the night before Scrutineering, this will be
a must attend dinner.”
All former winners have been invited to attend the event and along
with interviews and commentary, there will be a rolling presentation
of old photos and a video feature of the winners from each decade.
There have been 19 bike champions in the 39 races and 13 car
champions in 27 races (cars first admitted in 1988).
“In 2005, we had the 30th Celebration dinner that sold out quickly
and this time, we anticipate a crowd in excess of 500,” said Mr
Yoffa. Given the speed that entries filled in both car and bike
sections, it is highly advisable to book seats when they go on sale.
There are expected to be almost 900 competitors at this year’s
event with 600 bike places and 140 car places confirmed.
The dinner and celebration will be held at the Alice Springs

FUTURE WOMEN IN MOTOR SPORT
Williams Martini Racing’s deputy team principal, Claire Williams,
inspired and educated sporting and corporate guests at a new
networking evening that formed part of the Women of Australian
Motor Sport’s expanded calendar of events during the lead up to
the 2015 Rolex Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
WAMS has for the past four years hosted various functions during
race week with the support of the Confederation of Australian
Motor Sport, and 2015’s new initiative with the Melbourne Business
School provided the opportunity for Williams to speak not only to
motor sport professionals but the wider business community about
the roles in which women play in motor sport, as well as increasing
participation and developing opportunities for women in motor
sport.
Hosted by WAMS Executive Committee member Amber Anderson
at the MBS graduate facility in Carlton, Williams addressed more
then 300 guests about the journey she had taken to her current
position of DTP, which was founded by her father and legendary
motor sport identity Sir Frank Williams. Williams Martini Racing to
date boasts nine Constructors’ championships and seven Drivers’
championships and is one of the most successful in the Formula
1 pitlane.
Exemplifying the traits required for success in such a fast-paced
and male-dominated environment, Williams also spoke about the
need to help the younger generation get into motor sport earlier to
help grow women’s participation long-term, the key ingredients of
teamwork, the business of motor sport, while also commending it
for being a strong equal opportunity industry for women wanting to
make a career within it.
“Formula One is my oxygen. What I love about it is that there are
no barriers to entry for women to come into Formula 1 because all
we’re looking for is the best talent,” said Williams. “So when I’m
recruiting, I don’t care that the person I’m talking to is a man or a
women, but are they going to do the best job for my team. And
similarly for racing drivers, we’re one of the very few sports in the
world that allow women to compete alongside men. There are no
barriers for a woman to line up on the grid on a Sunday afternoon.
“Formula 1 and its stakeholders are really trying to push the diversity
conversation, so if you do come to the paddock nowadays you
see so many women working so may different roles that have
traditionally been roles for men.”
Williams also added that having role models is one of the most
important ingredients in helping increase the participation of
women in motor sport, thanks to the efforts of the FIA’s Women
in Motorsport Commission and locally through committees like
WAMS.
“Their roles are so important because they can create pathways,
they can mentor, they can guide the younger generation of females
that want to come up in our sport. And Susie [Wolff] is a perfect
example of a great trailblazer in Formula 1 because it is all about
role modeling, and showing the younger generation of women that
you can come and do this because people are doing it already.”
WAMS Chair Samantha Reid thanked Williams for her time and for
being a role model herself for women wanting to be a success in
the industry.
“We really are fortunate to have someone as experienced and
professional as Claire inspire us to keep striving to be successful
in motor sport,” said Reid. “She is someone who all generations of
women can look up to as proof that women can achieve anything
in motor sport and also generally in business as well. I’d also like to
thank the Melbourne Business School for opening up its doors and
allowing us to reach a new audience of supporters. Hopefully this
event can become something we can grow as a future staple event
on the WAMS calendar.”
In addition to the evening Q&A with Williams, Professor Jill Klein
PhD from the MBS also spoke on Leading and Learning Resilience
for Women at the WAMS Luncheon held early that afternoon onsite
at the Australian Grand Prix.

review of the application of Fuel Tank requirements.
Technical
The CAMS Technical Department is undertaking a review of the
application of Fuel Tank requirements, in particular the use of FIA
Homologated Fuel Safety Bladders defined as FIA FT3 1999, FT3.5
1999 and FT5 1999.
The FIA Fuel Safety Bladders are commonplace in a range of CAMS
disciplines, categories and classes, governed by the requirements
for homologation as defined by the FIA. These FIA requirements
include a specific time frame for expiry of the homologation after 5
years with the possibility of a further 2 years, following recertification
by the manufacturer or a manufacturer’s agent.
Fuel Safety Bladders, contained within a fuel tank structure, are
designed to increase the ability of the fuel tank to resist rupturing as
a result of an incident to the fuel tank structure, thereby preventing
the rapid discharge of fuel and the likelihood of ignition and
subsequent fire.
The homologation time frame, applied by the FIA, is based on a
range of factors in consultation with the manufacturers. The main
consideration is the volatility of fuels used in motor sport that often
contain compounds and chemicals that are detrimental to the
integrity of the bladder, particularly the seam sealants used in the
construction.
Whilst contained, and in normal use within the fuel tank structure,
the bladder can remain fit for purpose, however the true test is
when the bladder is required to perform the task of fuel containment
in an incident.
Regulation Moratorium
The review will seek to gather data on the current use of FIA Fuel
Safety Bladders. During this data collection period, a moratorium
has been placed on the application of the FIA homologation expiry
on Safety Fuel Bladders and will remain in place until 30 June 2015.
Of course, any bladder with visible or evident signs of deterioration
of leakage will not be permitted to remain in use.
Following the moratorium and data collation period, CAMS will
review the application of current fuel tank regulations and consider
the future application of regulations for fuel tanks.
This review will include working with the manufacturers to ensure
that the Fuel Tank market in Australia is well supported. In addition,
it is anticipated that CAMS will publish a list of manufacturers
and/or agents in Australia permitted to undertake recertification.
CAMS also seeks to work closely with the FIA to ensure that the
FIA standards are applied in a measured and considered manner
within CAMS Motor Sport.
CAMS, as the custodian of Motor Sport in Australia under the FIA,
takes the application of safety in motor sport very seriously. This
review is not intended to be alarmist, but does seek to ensure that
any identified risk is considered appropriately and managed with
the best interest of those participating in motor sport.
CAMS appreciates the support and assistance from all stakeholders
as this process is undertaken.
To discover that an out of homologation bladder can no longer
perform as required with the resultant potential for a significant fuel
fire is a substantial risk that requires consideration.

Anthony Martin cultivating success in USF2000
Perth-born F2000 driver Anthony Martin continues to impress
spectators and rivals alike with his driving abilities. Signed to John
Cumminskey Racing, one of the top teams in the USF2000 series,
Anthony has adapted well to the ‘wings and slicks’ vehicle.
“The race format here is a lot different than what I am used to, with
a lot more laps in the races and a lot more practice time as well.
And the race rules are harsher than what we have in Australia,”
said Martin.
Martin made his US debut at the Nola Motorsport Park in New
Orleans, qualifying eighth and finishing an impressive fifth in a field
of 19 competitors. In the final race of the day, Martin finished third –
ahead of experienced drivers, and the equal-highest ranked rookie
of the meeting – despite the foreign nature of the US format.
Success is no stranger to Martin: he won the 2013 WA Formula
Ford title in his rookie year. So what’s next for this Australian-bred
star-in-the-making? St Petersburg, Florida for the USF2000 Round
1 Grand Prix late March, before racing in New Orleans, Indianapolis,
Toronto and California.

WORLD FINALS
Australia’s newest F1 in Schools National Champions from
Melbourne and Adelaide are about to go on a journey of a lifetime.
Eight high school students from Melbourne and Adelaide are about
to go on the journey of a lifetime…representing their nation later
this year at the World Final of the biggest technology program
on the planet involving 17,000 schools and more than 9,000,000
students, the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge.
‘Hyperdrive Performance’ from Trinity Grammar School, Kew and
‘Precision Racing’ from Brighton Secondary School, Adelaide,
managed to outperform thousands of other F1 teams from across
Australia through a series of interschool, regional, state and national
elimination finals.
They designed and built miniature F1 cars capable of reaching 0-80
KM/H in under 2 seconds. They mastered NASA-type 3D design
and aerodynamics software and used smoke and wind tunnels and
industry-standard manufacturing centres in order to build them.
They collaborated with industry, produced a detailed technical
portfolio which was judged by engineers, and were judged across
11 criteria from innovative design and car speed to public speaking
and marketing.
Twenty four teams competed in the National Finals which were
staged over 3 days in a trackside pavilion at Melbourne’s Albert
Park during the running of the 2015 Formula 1® Rolex Australian
Grand Prix. They were visited by competition patron Alan Jones
MBE the former F1 World Champion, and federal and state
politicians, V8 Supercars teams and representatives from long time
National Sponsor the Defence Materiel Organisation.
‘Hyperdrive Performance’ and ‘Precision Racing’ hope to emulate
the success of previous teams from their schools which were
crowned F1 in Schools™ World Champions in 2005 and 2012.
Team Australia has won 4 world titles – the most of any nation.
The World Champions receive a solid crystal Bernie Ecclestone
Trophy presented by the legend of Formula One himself and the
Formula One teams, which are patrons of this global student
technology competition, donate car parts as trophies.

SAFETY PLEDGE
The FIA has launched a new online pledge aimed at promoting
road safety and committing drivers to obey the rules of the road.
The FIA has launched a new online pledge aimed at promoting
road safety and committing drivers to obey the rules of the road, as
part of the FIA Action for Road Safety campaign.
The fans, the general public as well as the motor sport and motoring
communities are invited to pledge their support and commitment
to the FIA’s 10 Golden Rules for safer motoring. The Golden Rules
are a set of tips intended to help motorists improve their driving
behaviour and remind them of their responsibilities to themselves,
their passengers and all other road users.
The FIA Action for Road Safety campaign was launched in May
2011 in support of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 20112020, which now reaches its mid-point. In order to remobilise
international attention on this global challenge, the FIA is promoting
awareness on road safety through its Member Clubs, partners and
utilising its leading role in motor sport.
Road accidents kill 1.3 million every year and injure 50 million more.
They are the number one killer of 15-29 year olds. Every day 500
children die on the world’s roads.

2014 Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton has given
his support to this initiative as a 2015 FIA Action for Road Safety
Ambassador. Along with FIA President Jean Todt, he was one of
the first signatories of the pledge, sending out a strong message to
his fans about the dangers of the road. Lewis is the first in a series
of high-profile ambassadors to be unveiled.
Lewis Hamilton said: “As an F1 driver, and even more now as a
World Champion, I feel I have a responsibility to promote safe
driving outside the track. The FIA’s 10 Golden Rules are simple
rules that everyone should follow. I strongly encourage my fans to
respect them and show their support by signing the pledge.”
Jean Todt, President of the FIA, said: “Road safety is a top priority
for the FIA. We’re calling on all road users to be responsible and to
obey the rules on the road. By taking our pledge, you are making
a personal commitment to improving road safety, one of today’s
