His travels took him through France, Rome, Venice and Spain, and while Ireland remains his main subject matter, his work has a vibrancy, which seems to be suffused with both French flair and Mediterranean light. He has exhibited widely throughout Ireland, including the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition. Having worked in Saudi Arabia, he kept an art studio in Provence in the 1970’s, where he was a neighbour of Picasso, and Le Musee Schwatschke was established, while his work was promoted by noted Paris dealer Iris Clert. In 1929 she followed the advice of Mainie Jellett and travelled to Paris to work at the studio of André Lhote. From there she moved to London where she was a member of the avant-garde London Group, and from 1937-39 she lived in New York. After New York, she returned to Ireland, settling in Dublin, concentrating on her painting. Although her work remained figurative, she painted vivid, highly coloured landscapes, and her work shows the cubist influence of Lhote. She was associated with the modern movement in Ireland and helped found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1943, becoming its president in 1944 after the death of Mainie Jellett. With Nano Reid she represented Ireland in the 1950 Venice Biennale, and was elected an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1957, but later resigned. There was a retrospective of her work in the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Trinity College Dublin in 1968 and in 1973 the College awarded her an honorary doctorate. Her work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery and the National Library of Ireland, together with private and corporate collections worldwide. 63 DOLAN’S 157 Arthur K Maderson Born in 1942 in London, Arthur Maderson studied Fine Art from 1959 to 1963 at Camberwell School of Art, London, where in 1963 he won the Anna Berry Award in open competition with graduates from all leading art schools in England. Although Maderson continued to paint on a regular basis, it was only in 1982, at the age of 40 that he felt sufficiently confident to exhibit. From this period, he has enjoyed considerable success, and this success has been replicated in Ireland, where his reputation as a painter of distinction and passion is firmly established. He works at a frantic pace with dedication, determination and unflagging vigour, and now divides his time between his home in Ireland and a small hamlet high in a largely unpopulated mountainous region of the Cevenne, in the South of France. Arthur Maderson has exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, The Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy and he has represented Ireland in many prestigious exhibitions. Born in Co Armagh in 1893, Charles Vincent Lamb was the eldest of seven children, who in 1913 had won a gold medal as best apprentice house painter of the year and in 1917 he won a scholarship to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where he studied for four years and came under the influence of Sean Keating. At this time, he became profoundly affected by the nationalist movement which dominated Dublin intellectual and artistic circles of the day. As such, he looked to the West of Ireland and to the people and traditions of the Gaeltacht, visiting Carraroe for the first time in 1921 and regularly in the years that followed. In these early years, Lamb had met Padraic O’Conaire from Connemara, who encouraged him to go West and paint the unspoilt landscape and life of the people, in the Carraroe area in particular, a remote Irish-speaking area, at that time. In 1919, Charles Lamb had four works selected for the Royal Hibernian Academy and he continued to exhibit there for the rest of his life. Annual one man shows in Dublin followed and in 1923 he was appointed an associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy, and by 1924 he was exhibiting at the Magee Gallery in Belfast. In 1926 and 1927, he toured Brittany, painting peasant life in a manner derived from his experience in the West of Ireland. The following year, he was back in the West of Ireland, travelling around in a horse-drawn caravan. An exhibition in Boston USA followed in 1928 and in 1929 and 1930 in New York. Until the mid 1930’s he continued to produce important figure studies, there after he concentrated on landscapes, being elected a full member of the RHA in 1938. Through the 1930’s, he exhibited work in Dublin, London and Brussels and as far afield as Los Angeles in 1932, at the Olympic Art Exhibition and in 1933, at the Chicago World Fair. Lamb had a house built of local stone in Carraroe in 1935, where he settled and started a Summer School, while continuing his summer exhibitions. He was also elected a member of the Royal Ulster Academy and in 1938, he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. His work was included in the Contemporary Irish Painting exhibition to North America in 1950. As well as exhibiting at the Oireachtas exhibition in Dublin, he showed at the Munster Fine Art Club and was a member of the United Arts Club in Dublin. He continued to paint right up the end of his days and died in Carraroe in 1964. A number of summer exhibitions were held in the Carraroe studio in the years that followed and a memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in 1969. It is thought that this work ‘Carraroe, Connemara’, was exhibited in the 1969 exhibition in Dublin under the title ‘Western Scene’. His work is included in many and varied important collections, including the Crawford Gallery, Cork, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, and the National Gallery of Ireland, together with municipal and university collections across Ireland. 92 3rd MAY 2015 188 188 Charles Lamb RHA RUA 1893 - 1964 CARRAROE, CONNEMARA Oil on Canvas 19.5"x23.5" (50x60cm) Signed Exhibited Chicago World Fair 1933. From 1925 she exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy and intermittently until 1968, forty two works in all. In 1928, she moved to Paris and attended La Grande Chaumiere along with fellow Irish artist, Catherine Fox. She later spent a period studying in London before returning to Ireland in 1930. Associated with the Dublin Painters, her first solo show was at their Stephen’s Green Gallery in 1934. Many of her paintings feature the landscapes of the West of Ireland and Achill. In her second solo show in Dublin in 1936, she exhibited fifty three watercolours and twenty three oils, an exhibition that was later brought to Drogheda, at the request of the Mayor. She exhibited at the Watercolour Society of Ireland from 1939-1950 and a writer in The Bell in 1941 considered that her watercolours ‘conveyed a deep psychological understanding of her 96 landscape subjects, with such economy of her medium, as to mark her independent merit ...’ Meanwhile, to earn a living, she painted portraits, including that of Estella Solomons and Patrick Hennessy. Earlier in 1938, she was represented at the Irish Drawings and Paintings Exhibition in New York, while during the War years, she continued to exhibit at the Dublin Painters Gallery, illustrated books and in 1943 exhibited at the first the first Irish Exhibition of Living Art, where the Dublin Magazine described her as ‘a bold and original painter, inclined to be rather too energetic in her approach’. She also exhibited at the Oireachtas Exhibition, and in 1946 at the Living Irish Art Exhibition in the Leicester Galleries, London. She also produces murals in Dublin Zoo and in the ballroom of the Four Provinces in Harcourt St, Dublin, none of which survive. From 1947, she exhibited at the Dawson Gallery, Dublin and from 1950 at the Victor Waddington Galleries in Dublin and London, during which time she lived in Fitzwilliam Square. Examples of her work toured North America in 1950 and more importantly in the same year, she represented Ireland along with Norah McGuinness at the Venice Biennale. Exhibitions at Dublin’s Dawson Gallery followed, while she also exhibited in Lugano in 1956 and at the Guggenheim International Award Exhibition in New York in 1960 and at the New York World Fair in 1964. She was represented in the Arts Council’s Modern Irish Painting European tour in 1969-70 and later in the Rosc Exhibition in Dublin in 1971. The following year, she won the Douglas Hyde Gold Medal at the Oireachtas Exhibition. A major retrospective exhibition of 108 of her works dating back to the 1930’s was held in 1974 by the Arts Councils in Dublin and Belfast. A close friend of Gerard Dillion, she painted in the West of Ireland with Dillion and George Campbell, often using the paint itself in ‘a spontaneous and even childlike manner’ Ambiguous about her age throughout her life, she died in Drogheda in 1981, where a retrospective exhibition took place in 1991 and another in 1999, a joint exhibition with Camille Souter in Castlebar, Co Mayo and yet another retrospective exhibition at the Taylor Galleries in Dublin. 3rd MAY 2015 191 191 Seán Keating PRHA HRA HRSA 1889 - 1977 AN SEAN FHEAR Charcoal Drawing 15"x13.75" (38x35cm) Signed Original David Hendriks Gallery Label Verso ¤2,000 - ¤2,500 97 DOLAN’S 192 Edward Delaney RHA 1930 - 2009 ABSTRACT COMPOSITION, FIGURE STUDY Sculpture in Mixed Media, on base with Granite Plinth, approx 22"(56) high overall 192 98 ¤2,000 - ¤2,500 3rd MAY 2015 193 Mainie Jellett 1897 - 1944 193 THE WAVE Gouache 14"x9.75" (35.5x25cm) Literature: Analysing Cubism, Irish Museum of Modern Art and Crawford Art Gallery 2013, illustrated p.97, The Wave c.1937, Oil on Canvas, for which the present work (lot 193) is a study in gouache Bruce Arnold, Abstract Cubist Rugs, Art Deco Rugs designed by Mainie Jellett, Ceadogan Rugs, 2008, p.13 ¤4,500 - ¤5,000 99 DOLAN’S 194 194 Manus Walsh b.1940 BURREN LIGHT, SUMMER WINDS Acrylic on Canvas 29.5"x39.5" (75x100.5cm) Signed ¤1,000 - ¤1,500 100 Born in 1940, Manus Walsh began his career in the field of stained glass, working for the Abbey Stained Glass Studios in Dublin, in the sixties. Definitions In these Conditions, West of Ireland Art Auctions Limited, trading as Dolan’s Art Auction House, who act as auctioneers and agents for the vendor, are called ‘The Auctioneers’ (which expression shall be deemed to include their servants and agents) and the representative of Dolan’s Art Auction House conducting the auction is called ‘The Auctioneer’. As auctioneers, Dolan’s act as agent for the seller. A sale contract is made directly between the seller and the buyer. However, Dolan’s may own a lot (and in such circumstances act in a principal capacity as seller) and/or may have a legal, beneficial or financial interest in a lot. 2. Third Party Liability Every person at or on the ‘Auctioneers’ premises or at any premises being used by the Auctioneer at any time shall be deemed to be there entirely at his/her own risk and shall have no claim whatsoever against the Auctioneers or their servants or agents in respect of any accident or incident which may occur, nor any injury, damage or loss howsoever arising and whether or not same is the subject of any allegation of negligence. 3. General Whilst the Auctioneers make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogue and the description of every lot: a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot or lots is sold by the vendor with all faults, imperfections and errors of description. b) The auctioneer shall not be responsible for any discrepancies between the colour in the catalogue illustration and that of the original work being offered for sale. c) Any claim under any Statute must be received in writing by the Auctioneers within three months of the sale. d) The Auctioneers shall not be liable for consequential or resultant loss or damage whether sustained by a Vendor or a Purchaser or the owner of any item or their respective servants and agents arising in any circumstances whatsoever and irrespective of any claim made by any party as to negligence or lack of care of the Auctioneers or any party acting on their behalf. e) All lots are made available for inspection for a reasonable period prior to auction. A buyer who makes a bid for any lot thereby acknowledges that he has satisfied himself as to the physical condition, state of repair or restoration, age and catalogue description of such lot and also that he accepts these conditions of sale. Dolan’s knowledge, in relation to each lot, is partially dependent on information provided by the seller and Dolan’s are not able to, and do not, carry out exhaustive due diligence searches on each lot. Bidders acknowledge this fact and accept responsibility for carrying out inspections and investigations to satisfy themselves as to the lots they may be interested in buying. Bidders also acknowledge the fact that many lots are of an age that they may not be in perfect condition. All lots are offered for sale with any imperfections. Catalogue descriptions and condition reports may on occasions make reference to particular imperfections of a lot, but Bidders should note that lots may have other faults not expressly referred to in the catalogue or condition report. Illustrations are for identification purposes only and will not convey full information as to the actual condition of lots. 4. The Auction a) The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving any reason or previous notice. He may bid on behalf of the vendor for all goods which are being offered subject to reserve or at the Auctioneer’s discretion. b) The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen, he has absolute discretion to settle it or to re-offer the lot for sale. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance or bidding or refuse a bid. 138 c) Each lot is put up for sale subject to any reserve price placed by the vendor. Whether or not there is a reserve price the seller has the right to bid either personally or by any other person (who may be the Auctioneer). d) All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogue and elsewhere concerning any lot are subject to any statements modifying or affecting the same made by the Auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the lot. 5. Rescindment Notwithstanding any other terms of these Conditions, if within 12 months after the sale, the Auctioneers have received from the buyer any notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within twenty one days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the Auctioneers in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies the Auctioneers that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the sale refunded. In the event of a dispute then the matter shall be settled by the President of the Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the Republic of Ireland. Both the buyer and the vendor agree to be bound by the decision. 6. Default The Auctioneers disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the vendor because they act as Agents for the vendor only and therefore do not pay out to the vendor until payment is received from the buyer. Instructions given by telephone are accepted at the sender’s risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith. In the event of a sale by private treaty both the vendor and the buyer agree to be bound by these conditions and any other special conditions of sale. 7. Retention of Title All goods remain the property of the vendor until paid for in full. The Auctioneers will not assume liability to discharge net proceeds arising from the sale of goods until those goods have been paid for in full. 8. Instructions All goods delivered to the Auctioneers’ premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction and will be catalogued and sold at the discretion of the Auctioneer and accepted by them subject to all the Sale Conditions. By delivering the goods to the Auctioneers for inclusion in their auction sales the vendor acknowledges that he or she has accepted and agreed to be bound by all these Conditions. 9. Collection and Deliveries The Auctioneers do not normally undertake the packing, collection or delivery of goods but will if requested use their best endeavours as Agent of the Owner to arrange for an independent contractor on the owner’s behalf to deal with packing, collection and/or delivery. The Auctioneer will not in any event arrange insurance of the goods and will accordingly not be liable for any loss or damage to goods howsoever arising including breakages or for any damage to premises, fixtures or fittings therein caused by such contractor or otherwise and the owner is responsive for all arrangements to verify that any such contractor and the goods is/are appropriately insured. Unless instructions are received to the contrary, charges (including VAT) for such services will be charged to the vendor’s account or discharged through the Auctioneers by the purchaser as the case may be. The Auctioneers’ liability (if any) will arise only where they themselves carry out packing and collection/ delivery and only in the case of breakage or loss caused through deliberate negligence of their employees and in any event in one single contract and the Auctioneers’ liability will not exceed C = 500. Provided further the Auctioneers will not be liable for consequential loss in any circumstances whatsoever. 10. Loss or Damage and Storage The Auctioneers reserve the right to store or arrange for the storage of goods held by them or delivered to them either on their own premises or elsewhere at their sole discretion and entirely at the owner’s risk. The Auctioneers shall not be liable for any loss (including consequential loss) howsoever caused or damage to goods of any kind including breakages, or for unauthorised removal of goods. 11. Right to Re-sell The Auctioneer reserves the right to re-sell any item that has not been collected within fourteen days. 12. Telephone bidding Every effort will be made to facilitate persons wishing to bid by telephone at auction but the auctioneer disclaims responsibility for any failures for whatever reason, in this regard. 13. Absentee Bidding Every effort will be made to facilitate persons wishing to leave commission bids with the auctioneer but the auctioneer disclaims responsibility for any failures for whatever reason, in this regard. 14. Droit de Suite The artist’s resale levy, the droit de suite, where applicable, will be deemed to be the responsibility of the vendor. Dolan’s Art Auction House will not charge this levy to the purchaser. The vendor by entering his goods for sale with Dolan’s Art Auction House acknowledges that he/she is responsible for the payment of this artist’s resale levy.
