Members have attended many activities this month. Two
members went to Roundhouse Day in Santa Fe. Three
members went to the leathercraft meeting. Four members
went to Horse-O-Rama. We had a good turnout for Parliamentary Procedure practices. Members in the dog
project got together to work on training. Eight members went to TLC and presented workshops for
leadership. Novices attended these workshops at Fun Fest. Nine members went to the Hippology meeting.
The Woodall boys attended the Doña Ana County Fun Shoot. Three of our members had a great time at
Home Ec. School in Belen. Seven new members went to the Welcome to New Mexico 4-H and made banners
to exhibit at the fair. Eight kids went to the shooting sports meeting to practice for the county shooting
contests. Six members also attended the County Council meeting. Our club leader handed out raffle tickets
for members to sell. The raffle drawing will be held at the club dance after county contest on May 30th. The
prizes are two ¾ ton bales of alfalfa, a custom Southwest Metalwork sign and a Remington 870 Express 12
gauge shotgun. The tickets are $5.00 each and you can get them from any Desert Clover 4-H Club member.

Our club has been busy. We had kids go to Home
Ec School – Caitlin Erramouspe, Makala Gonzalez,
Katie Jennings, Emily Jennings & Harley Gardener.
Caitlin was a Junior Instructor.
We will be having a Club fundraiser March 28-29.
We will have a concession stand at a 3D archery
shoot.
Our Senior Shooters are excited about County
Shooting Sports!
Fort Selden 4-H group held its monthly meeting on
March 18th 2015. We had a lot to discuss as there are
many upcoming events going on in our club and county.
We talked about county contest, shooting sports
requirements, practices and upcoming shoots, project
meetings, purchasing show animals and Expo. There
will be a club rabbit project meeting on March 31st at the
Radium Springs Community Center at 6:30. Our community service project this month was filling Easter eggs
with candy to deliver to the homeless shelter. Next
month’s community service will be canned goods so
please bring a canned good item to next month’s
meeting. Also starting now till August our club will be
collecting everyday necessities to create care packages, please remember to be on the lookout for good
deals and free items; toothpaste, tooth brushes, little
shampoos, combs, travel size items, etc. Expo cash
party tickets are now on sale, there are parents within
our club still selling tickets. Silent Auction items for the
cash party can still be donated to the County Office.
Hope to see everyone at next month’s meeting.

Happy Spring everyone! We had Fun Fest earlier this month and it was a lot of fun!! We had several teen
leaders and 4-H members that were there. The food was great, the activities were fun and we had a lot of
fun spending time with old friends and making new ones. If you didn't get to Fun Fest this year, there’s
always next year!!
Our club has been busy learning new things and practicing. We have started baking workshops, sewing
workshops and other projects. Everyone is doing their best work and making sure they are ready for EXPO
and the fairs. We have some very talented members and can’t wait to see how they do!!
Our shooting sports members have been very busy with practice. The senior members are getting ready
for the Senior shooting sports competition on March 29th. I am keeping my fingers crossed for good
weather at the competition. Good luck to all the Seniors competing from Valle Verde and good luck to all
other club Seniors competing! !

We had several members give reports on activities they
have participated in this past month. A report was given on
the tour in Santa Fe at the legislature where they pass bills and the county’s Teen Leaders
Conference and Fun Fest. Our club will be participating in a community service project for the
Roadrunner food bank in April and will be having a T-shirt design contest which we will vote on next
month. Teresa talked to us about the Expo cash party fundraiser; she has tickets for sale and
Mrs. Deruyter and Mrs. Russell will be coordinating items to put together a silent auction item.

The Inspiring Minds had their March meeting on the 5th and talked about what we will be doing this month
and next. The Inspiring Minds 4-H group is donating to Showers of Grace. We asked our 4-H members to help
by picking up some items such as blankets, newborn sized clothing, diapers,
bottles and rattles for those who are unable to have a baby shower. ( see picture
below)
We are a new group made up of homeschoolers, with a lot of younger
members. We are taking it a step at a time as we gather at our meetings and
learn with one another, and get to know each other.
We discussed doing Easter crafts at our April meeting that we will take and
distribute to a couple of area nursing homes. We will also be doing an egg hunt at our April meeting.
National Volunteer Week – April 12-18, 2015
4-H Leaders –Thank You!
Somewhere between the sternness of a parent and the
comradeship of a pal is that mysterious creature we call a volunteer 4-H Leader.
These leaders come in all shapes and sizes, and may be male or female. But they all have one thing in
common - a glorious twinkle in their eyes!
4-H Leaders are found everywhere - at judging contests, 4-H meetings, fairs, and community service
activities. They always are preparing for, sitting through, participating in, or recuperating from an
event of some kind.
They are tireless consumers of muffins, experts at taking knots out of thread and spend hours on the
telephone, email, Facebook and other communication methods!
A 4-H Leader is many things - an artist making a float for the Fourth of July, a doctor prescribing for
an underfed calf, a counselor at camp, a lawyer filling out reports, and a shoulder to cry on when that
dress just won't fit. Nobody else is so early to rise and so late to get home at night. Nobody else has
so much fun with so many boys and girls.
We can't do without them. They receive no salary and we can never repay them.
They are angels in aprons, saints in straw hats. Their only reward is the love of the youth they work
with and the respect of the community. But when they look around them at the skills they've taught,
and the youth they've influenced, there's an inner voice from somewhere that says, "Well done."

DAC 4-H and FFA EXPO
We just wanted to send out a friendly notice to all of you regarding silent auction items for
the EXPO Jackpot Party (Cash Party) on April 11th, 2015.
The EXPO Board needs 4-H’s help. We are asking for each club to contribute items to the silent auction.
Funds generated from the auction go back to members’ premium checks. We know our 4-H families know
many people and have connections with numerous businesses to ask for donations of gift certificates,
merchandise, and other items of value. All silent auction items can be dropped off at the Extension Office no
later than April 10th.
Also, we have Jackpot tickets available. Tickets are $100.00. Funds raised from the Jackpot go directly back
to 4-H/FFA members in premiums! We have a successful EXPO due to the commitment of parents,
supporters, businesses, and youth working together to raise funds and recognize the achievements of our
youth. It is through these efforts our youth receive premiums at EXPO. We need everyone’s help. Please let
Teresa or Eva know if you need a jackpot ticket.
Another way to support the EXPO is through sponsorship advertisements ranging from $25-$5,000. You may
contact Dawn Harty-Evans, DAC 4-H/FFA Expo Secretary at 575-650-1050 for ad sponsorships.

2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Futurity and 3-Year-Old
Versatility Nominations
Horse Certificates
Horse Certificates need to be completed or
renewed every year with approval of the County
Agent. The horse certificate is a form similar to a
registration form. You can find it on
the 4-H website under “Forms and
Publications.” They are due on MAY
1ST to the county extension office
(not the State 4-H Office).
4-H’ers with advanced skills in horsemanship are eligible to
nominate a two-year-old horse for the Western Pleasure
Futurity and Showmanship Classic held each
year during the State Fair 4-H Horse Show.
Nominations are due in the State 4-H
Office by May 1st of the current year.
Horses eligible for the two-year-old Western
Pleasure Futurity must be totally green, that is,
having never received any riding by ANYONE
other than the 4-H’er who nominates the
horse to the Futurity. During the State 4-H
Fair Horse Show, the horses will participate in
three go-rounds of Western Pleasure.
Horses get sold, traded, and/or leased
and this is the purpose to do them
each year. This is a unique aspect to
the
project. Horse Certificates are
required for any sanctioned 4-H
horse show. The only way that the agent can verify that the horse being used is the project horse, is
for a 4-H member to document that they are the
exhibitor, lessee, or owner of that particular horse.
The horses properly nominated as two-year-olds to the
Futurity are eligible the following year to enter the threeyear-old Versatility Class. Advice and counsel on training
techniques may come from outside sources, however, the
4-H member must do all the riding and work on the
Versatility Horse.
NEW FILLABLE FORMS CAN BE FOUND ON
THE DOÑA ANA COUNTY WEBSITE!
The Versatility Class is held during the State Fair 4-H
Horse Show. Nominations for the Versatility Class are due
to the State 4-H Office by May 1st of the current year.
Nomination forms and complete rules are available on the
4-H website under “Horse and Livestock Events.” There is a
$20.00 nomination fee.

The New Mexico State 4-H Dog School was designed to help youth and leaders become
familiar with the 4- H Dog Project, the different events youth may participate in with their
dogs and to promote Responsible Dog Ownership. State 4-H Dog School is two and a half
days of workshops and presentations to help develop leadership, self reliance, sportsmanship,
a greater understanding of their dog and citizenship responsibilities by working together to
support community dog projects and activities. 4-H members between the ages of 9 and 19 may attend
Dog School, along with leaders, agents and parents. Dogs do not have to be full breeds to participate in
4-H Dog School, but for the safety of the dog and youth, must be older than 6 months as of January 1,
2015, have all vaccinations, not in season or aggressive.
WHEN: June 12-14, 2015

Livestock Projects
Its almost time for the majority of your livestock projects to be bought. There are some major
considerations to think about before you buy your livestock project. You can show livestock
and feed them while on a budget. But it is important to remember that a good animal costs the
same to feed as a poor quality one and sometimes even more. Set goals as a family with what
you want to accomplish this year. Set a budget. Know how much money you need to feed and
care for the animal before you buy your animals. Feeding your animal a good show ration along with the proper
amount of feed everyday does make a huge difference in the show ring. It can be the difference between making the
sale and getting the gate. One problem people continually make is buying too many animals and those animals not
getting the amount of time they each need to reach their full potential.
Cost to consider:
 Feed
 Show supplies
 Animal Health Costs
 Equipment
 Animal Cost
Showing livestock is one of the best activities youth can be involved in. I don’t know of any other projects that keep
kids out of trouble and help prepare them for the real world, than a summer of livestock projects. But it is important
to work smarter not harder. If you have any questions please give Teresa a call.
Tips that will assist you with the Swine Project
1. Find a breeder or breeders that are trustworthy and have a very high health program.
2. Purchase pigs that are the correct age.
A. Do Not buy pigs that are too old. With the current trend of making pigs wider with more body and more
fat, the pigs will gain weight faster. Most pigs should be 175-195 days old when shown.
B. Prior to purchasing your pigs, make sure you have a warm dry barn to put them in. Many of the pigs
have been in a climate controlled environment and sudden changes can cause sickness.
C. Try to start the pigs on the same feed as the breeder has had the pigs on. Use the very best feed you have
access to and you can afford. Keep clean fresh water available at all times. Keep your pigs wormed
(every 30-40 days) alternating wormers. Safeguard works very well, however it will not get rid of external parasites. Keep your pens clean!!
D. If at all possible you should try to attend pig school. It is a great learning experience.
It is very important that you ask questions to learn about your project. Don’t be shy. Ask your 4-H Agent or Ag
Teacher questions you have about your animals. Many of the breeders are very willing to assist you as well.

New Mexico 4-H Community Service Scholarship
Would you like your way paid to attend a state event??? That can
be done just by organizing a community service project!!
This scholarship is available to any Novice, Junior or Senior 4-H
member, applying for funding to cover event registration fees or costs associated with
serving on the State Leadership Team. This scholarship will cover the registration
expenses for Senior Leadership Retreat, Youth-Get-Away, Horse School, State 4-H Conference or a portion of the team fees for serving as a State 4-H Officer, Ambassador,
or Diplomat.
Scholarship Criteria

Must submit a New Mexico 4-H Community Service Scholarship application Form.

IMPORTANT - There has been a revision made to the scholarship application and a
reminder regarding projects submitted. Below is the following revision and reminder:

Multiple youth, including siblings cannot do the same community service project. If
applications are submitted by multiple youth with the same project proposal they will
be denied. Siblings can do a community service project at the same location as long
they are different projects.

Applications that have community service activities through established organizations like cleaning up trash along the highway or just working as a volunteer for an
established organization for example will not be accepted. If the applicant would like
to work with the organization in creating a new program that is acceptable. The project must be an activity that the youth designs, organizes and implements that will
have an impact on the community.
 Scholarship Applications for the events are due two months before the event regis-
tration deadline. Here are the scholarship application deadline dates for the following
events: Officer Positions and State 4-H Conference - April 15, Ambassador and Diplomat positions September 15, Senior Leadership Retreat October 15, Home Ec School
January 2, Youth Get-Away January 15, 4-H Dog School March 1, Horse School March 15.
Applications are not accepted after the deadline date.
 After a youth applies for a community service scholarship, receives it, and either
decides not to attend the event or cannot due to a conflict, they may: 1. Apply the
scholarship to another 4-H event, 2. Use it the following year if they have submitted
their complete community service report, or 3. Not do the community service
project.
If they decide not to do the community service project it will not be held against them if
they apply the next year. The only time they will not be allowed to apply again is if they
receive the scholarship, attend the event they applied for, and do not complete the
community service project and submit a report within the year following the time the
application was approved.

necessary to "letter" is to complete the requirements in their age level and submit the appropriate forms to
their County Extension Office by September 1. The first year a member letters they receive a "clover" letter
as you would see on a lettermen jacket. Bronze, Silver, and Gold pins in the shape of the letter "H" are
awarded in the respective age levels. A member can "letter" at anytime, even if they did not begin as a
novice, but they will receive the pin for the appropriate age level. In addition, two platinum letters will be
awarded each year in the form of a plaque. The platinum letters are based on overall achievement and may be
