replaces the company’s 57-footer. The 58
has all the trademarks of other Selenes—
standard single engine, raised pilothouse
with forward-angled windshield, flybridge,
slightly hollow sheerline, and covered
cockpit and side decks. However, the 58
has a completely new, longer, deeper, and
more efficient hull design and a new interior layout. We were fortunate to be accompanied on the sea trials with Selene’s Howard Chen who was able to explain many of
the design features.
Design and construction
The 58
has a deep ballasted full keel and large protected rudder to reduce the tendency to yaw
in following seas. The forward half of the hull
below the waterline is rounded like a typical
full displacement hull, but the aft section flattens out and has more pronounced chines in
order to help reduce rolling. The flatter after
section is also said to provide more lift and
reduce the tendency for the hull to squat as
it reaches hull speed. An 8-inch scallop in
the hull above the propeller is designed to

established by Howard Chen in
Taiwan in 1998. Chen is also the designer
of the company’s China-built Selene line
of raised pilothouse trawlers from 38 to 86
feet. These fibreglass vessels are known
as good long range cruisers and comfortable liveaboards. Selene has sales offices
throughout North America and Europe,
and their trawlers have been sold to clients
around the world.

increase water pressure in the hollow and
reduce propeller cavitation. It also allows for
a lower-than-normal shaft angle of 5 degrees
(instead of 10 to 12 degrees on most displacement hulls), which focuses the thrust
more efficiently. Waterline length has been
increased thanks to the addition of a gradually rounded cruiser stern that extends the
hull back to the aft end of the integral swim
platform. The 58 has a bulbous bow designed
to increase the waterline length, cancel the
normal bow wave and therefore reduce drag
and improve hull efficiency. The in-house
designed bulbous bow is slightly modified to
reduce pitching through the use of a reverse
teardrop shape said to provide standard bulbous bow drag when the bulb rises, but a
sharper angle and less drag when the bulb
drops. While none of these design features are
revolutionary, they all help improve the ride
and efficiency of the Selene hull.
The hull is hand-laid with solid glass below
the waterline to 6 inches above. Corecell core
sandwich is used for the rest of the hull, decks
and superstructure. Vinylester resin is used
on the outer four layers of glass to help prevent osmosis. There are five collision bulkheads. Vacuum bagging is used throughout
to ensure good penetration of resin into the
various layers. The hull-deck joint is glued,
bolted and then laminated with mat and
woven roving.

Just forward of the swim grid,
two transom gates and port and starboard
bulwark gates provide cockpit access to the
58. A hatch in the cockpit sole provides access

the fly bridge. Wide, covered side decks with
high bulwarks extend forward to the Portuguese bridge where a gate opens to the spacious foredeck. The arrangement of the raised
anchor windlass, double bow rollers and
stainless Sampson post give the 58 a real “big
ship” feel. The flybridge has plenty of room
for a dinghy, and there is ample settee seating
for entertaining and hanging out under the
permanent hardtop. The helm has duplicate

All the interior spaces are panelled in rich satin-finished Burma teak with
teak cabinetry and teak and holly floors. The
saloon is entered from a Dutch door at its aft
end. The layout is fairly standard: L-shaped

to port and a sliding hi-lo table. The finely

finished teak table can be slid in to serve as
a coffee table or pulled out about a foot to
serve as a dining table. Large windows provide ample natural light. On the test boat,
the owners had installed a gas fireplace below
the flat screen TV in the aft port corner of the
saloon. The U-shaped galley is forward and
to starboard on the same level as the saloon.
The granite galley countertop has two tiers,
with the upper tier suited for informal bar
stool dining, plating food or simply keeping the cook company. The galley features a
three-burner Force 10 stove with oven and
a convection oven and full-size fridge with
a small freezer compartment. Across from
the galley is a fancy circular stairway leading down to the master suite and hallway
forward to the VIP stateroom.
The pilothouse is three steps up and forward of the galley. It features a cozy L-shaped
settee and table and L-shaped helm station,
with plenty of room for laying out paper
charts. Port and starboard Dutch doors

provide access to the side decks. Two stairways provide access to either below decks or
up to the flybridge.
Below decks, the V-berth VIP stateroom
features a walkaround queen and plenty of
louvered cupboards for storage. The en suite
has granite floors and counters and a mirrored ceiling which makes the room appear
much larger. Aft and to starboard on the test
boat is a U-shaped office, perfect for doing
business while at sea. Alternately, the room
could be used as a small third stateroom with
stacked bunks. The master has a walk-around
queen and lots of hanging lockers and drawers for clothing. It also has a deluxe en suite
with granite floor and countertops and separate shower and head.
The engine room can be accessed through
a watertight door next to the master. Aft of
the engine room is a large multi-use area
called the commissary, where supplies can
be stored for long voyages. It also contains a
washer, dryer and freezer. The extra freezer
space is an excellent idea, but it is accessed
through a relatively small side door and when
full, I imagine it would be difficult to find
a specific item. A standard top-loading

was powered by an optional single 341-horsepower, 6-cylinder, 12.5-litre John Deere diesel
driving a 34-inch four-blade prop through a
3:1 reduction gear. A 450-horsepower Cummins QSM11 6125 AFM diesel is standard.
The 341 hp John Deere is the same engine
as the 520 hp model, but de-rated to 341 hp.
These days, this is done by simple computer
programming. All the juice available from the
larger engine simply isn’t necessary and the
341 hp provides plenty of power to drive the
Selene 58 at hull speed.
A fuel polishing system is standard—an
important feature when taking on dubious
fuel in foreign ports. The bow and stern
thrusters are electric. Wesmar active fin stabilizers will help keep things level in big seas
and a Wesmar hydraulic get-home system
(auxiliary power unit) powered by the generator can drive the boat at about 4 knots
should the main engine fail.
The engine room is clean and well laid-out
with an impressive 6’ 2” headroom (due in
part to the new deep hull design) and great
access around the engine. SoundDown insulation does a great job of keeping engine noise

Underway The bow and stern thrusters made it easy to manoeuvre out of a very
tight fit at Selene Seattle’s docks. Idling down
towards Lake Washington the engine was
turning at 713 rpm and we were making
5.3 knots using 1.3 gph. It was immediately
apparent that Selene had done a very good
job of soundproofing, there was no need to
raise our voices and this carried right through
to top speeds. Once clear of the no-wake
zones, we increased the throttles to 1,000
rpm which gave us 7.2 knots and a fuel burn
of 2.7 gph. At 1,500 rpm, we were making
9.7 knots, burning 9.2 gph and using about
184 hp. This would make a great economical cruising speed and give a range of more
than 1,600 miles. Not surprisingly, fuel consumption beyond this speed increased rapidly. The bulbous bow seemed to do a great
job of reducing the bow wave (especially at
about 1,400–1,500 rpm and even the stern
wave was minimal at all speeds. At wide open
throttle (1,845 rpm) our speed was 10.6 knots
and we were burning 17.3 gph. Engine load
was 92 percent. The power-assist hydraulic
steering—three turns lock-to-lock—was a
