THREE DAY WORKSHOP “APPROACHES TO SOCIAL RESEARCH” June 2527, 2015 About the Program Research Methodology workshops often comprises of methods and techniques of data analysis but with limited understanding of the reason behind the different techniques, methods and research design as a whole there remains a gap of logical and conceptual knowledge. This workshop will be helpful in filling that gap and will support us in the research progression. The aim of the three day workshop is to provide a basic knowledge of the complex web of information and knowledge surrounding research methods, when doing social research. Workshop Objectives The objective of this workshop is to provide the participants with knowledge of research methodologies in order to prepare them for their individual/organization research projects which ultimately lead to dissemination of knowledge in the form of publications/ presentations. For Whom This research methodology workshop is designed to enhance ‘research culture’ among development sector professionals , current doctoral students and aspiring doctoral candidates. Thus it has been structured so as to facilitate the participants get oriented to both research methodology and statistical methods. Workshop Content • Overview of Social Research • Research Design – Problem formulation, research questions and objectives • Overview Quantitative, Qualitative and Mixed Methods • Concepts, Variable and Hypothesis • Sampling • Identifying data sources and methods of data collection • Design of questionnaire and testing • Data analysis through SPSS: Hypothesis test, ANOVA, Correlation and Regression Analysis • Case Study, Grounded Theory and Ethnography • Qualitative data analysis • Ethics and Research • Writing Research Proposal • Report Writing Workshop Outcome At the end of the workshop the participants will be equipped to • Understand the importance of social research and how it can add value to the work they do • Develop research questions and acquire better understanding of various sampling procedures and sample size calculation • Gain confidence to design and conduct research study on their own • Understand the use of appropriate statistical analysis in order to meaningfully interpret the findings • Acquire knowledge in reporting and publishing the results in popular journals Venue Board Room, Ground Floor, Prof. M.S. Gore Academic Block, Naoroji Campus, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Deonar, Mumbai – 400088 Participant Selection The following criteria will be considered in the process of accepting the applications: • Development sector professionals • Professionals involved in research/teaching • Doctoral students or Postgraduates in social work, sociology, management, rehabilitation and any discipline of social sciences who are actively involved in research/plan to coordinate research at their institution Fee Structure Corporates: INR 3500/ NGOs, Academicians, working professionals & full time research scholars: INR 2500/ Life Members of TISS Alums Association (TISSAA): INR 2000/ Late Registration Fee (after last date of registration): 10% increase over the original fee Note: The fee will cover course materials, certificate, group photograph, tea and lunch during the workshop. Payment Procedures A participant can pay his/her registration fee by cheque/DD in favour of “Tata Institute of Social Sciences Alums Association” payable at Mumbai and send it along with the filledup Registration form and send to the Alumni Office (address mentioned under registration procedure). Admission to the workshop is based on first come first serve basis. Accommodation The Institute is in 'Mid semester' therefore, not in a position to provide accommodation at the Institute. Hence you are requested to make your own arrangement for stay and travel during the workshop.
