CUYAHOGA COUNTY DIVISION OF SENIOR AND ADULT SERVICES Elder Abuse - Warning Signs of Neglect Elder abuse can happen to anyone – a loved one, a neighbor and when we are old enough, it can even happen to us. Elder abuse affects seniors across all socio‐economic groups, cultures and races. According to current research, neglect is the most common type of elder abuse. While it can take many forms, the common red flags an older adult may be a vic m of neglect include: Poor hygiene Not enough food Unclean or inappropriate clothing Lack of needed medical aids (e.g., medica ons, glasses, walker, teeth, hearing aid, etc.) No supervision of person with demen a Person is confined to bed and le without care Home is clu ered, filthy, in disrepair or is a fire/safety hazard Home does not have adequate facili es (stove, refrigerator, heat, cooling, working plumbing, or electricity) Person has untreated pressure “bed” sores If you know a Cuyahoga County resident who is 60+ years and possibly a vic m of neglect, call Cuyahoga County APS at (216) 420‐6700.
