A FARM IN THE CITY
Saturday May 23: Family Day at
Southlands Heritage Farm
Enjoy an afternoon on a working farm in
Southlands. There will be a spring market,
pony rides, a Southlands-wide scavenger
hunt, pizza made in a cob oven, and more.
Meet the bees, pigs, goats, chickens and
ducks on a guided tour of the farm. The fun
starts at noon!
SALMONBERRY DAYS is Dunbar’s unique,
month-long neighbourhood environment
festival. It is organized each year by
volunteers. We are interested in
neighbourhood ecology, the history of the
neighbourhood, backyard gardening, and
other pursuits that build a sense of
community. If you have never been to a
Salmonberry Days event, let this be the year
you come out and see what it’s all about. Let
these family-friendly events become part of
your kids’ memories of their childhood.
Theme: Transportation
One Hundred and Twenty-Five Years of Transit in Vancouver
On the 27th of June in 1890, the first electric streetcar rolled through the streets of
Vancouver. This year we celebrate 125 years of transit service in the City, and just over
one hundred years since the first streetcars ran in Dunbar. From the Musqueam First
Nations in 800 BC, to the McCleery farm in 1862, and through to the present day, the
North Arm of the Fraser has been a major route for river transportation of goods and
people. Salmonberry Days events will include two bus tours, a river walk, a talk on the
history of the transit system from earliest days, and a presentation by two retired transit
employees on their long service in the industry.
We will be offering various walks around the neighbourhood to examine nature, history
of housing and the changing commercial scene. A new event will be "The Heart of
Belonging" workshop. If you are new to the area these events will help you to learn
about Dunbar, and meet the residents.
The Dunbar Community Centre organizes the annual Salmonberry Days Fair on May 24,
a Sunday. Check out this calendar for detailed information on the month's activities.

Vancouver Yacht Club all of which
are on the east side of Jericho
Beach Park.
The tide will be low and we will walk east
from Jericho Beach along the beach
looking at the rocks and land features. We
will see coal-bearing sandstones laid down
in 50-million year old river deltas, the
roots of 32 million year old volcanoes,
giant concretions, plant fossils, and how
the unceasing action of the waves is
slowly eating away the beach frontage.
Looking around Burrard Inlet, we will
observe rocks and land forms that were
created over the last 100 million years by
plate tectonics, sea-level changes and ice
movement. The route will be muddy,
rocky and slippery with many puddles left
by the retreating tide so wear appropriate
non-slip footwear.

Prof. Alec Globe from UBC will present an
illustrated talk on the history of roses in
Canada. For 25 years, he has grown
hundreds of roses and rhododendrons in
White Rock. Steve Whysall's feature on

mosses in our region. We will find out how
moss is a key component of the Camosun
Bog, and how other organisms make the

through the forest, looking at the mosses
that live there. Shona will test our

Built in an open field in 1912-14, as the
Convent of the Sacred Heart, this historic
building came close to demolition when
the convent closed in 1979. It was
acquired and renovated by St. George's
School, to become their expanded Junior
School. We will have a walking tour of the
grounds and the interior of the building,
and learn some of its early and more
recent history.

Meet at the Farm Gate
The new access road to the Farm is well
signed from Westbrook Mall on South
Campus. UBC Farm parking is free for the
first two hours, then must be paid. Ross
Drive Parking is free for two hours but
then one cannot pay for more.
This is Nature Vancouver’s monthly bird
survey at the UBC Farm and takes about 2
to 3 hours. Route is about three km in
length, including walking farm fields and
second growth forest. All levels of birders
are welcome to join the walk.

Anna Dean started her career in 1975 as
one of the first women bus drivers hired
since the 1940s. Her story will detail the
challenges of entering a male dominated
workplace. Angus McIntyre started his
long career as a bus driver in 1969, and
not long after retirement in 2010,
exhibited his archival photographs at the
Baron Gallery. Part of his talk will be:
“How I Became an Artist”. Toonie
donation appreciated.

See the yearly progress of bog restoration.
Join the Crazy Boggers as volunteers to
assist in restoration of the bog. Wear your
old clothes and waterproof footwear.

What is the Jericho Stewardship Group up
to in Jericho Park? Learn about the
history, ecology, and re-naturalization
efforts, and how you could contribute.
Join JSG volunteers in a walk through the
area south of the ponds. Focus on wetland
restoration, native plants, forest
replanting, and future linkage with Jericho
Lands. Kids are welcome!

This 2-4km walk along Locarno Beach is a
fund raiser for the Vancouver Hospice
Society's new Granville St west-side

Meet at the corner of Celtic Ave.
And Balaclava St.
From farmers' barges, salmon cannery
steamboats and put-puts, they were all
used in the early days on the North Arm of
the Fraser River to move produce to the
local and overseas markets. Tides, winds,
ice and shallow channels made river
transportation difficult most months of
the year.
The river trail is compacted chip seal
gravel, and can be used by wheelchairs.
Children are welcome, but no dogs please
because of equestrian horse riders using

Emergency Preparedness. Included will be
the MYN film developed by the State of
Washington and an easy stepwise
checklist for what to do when an

Streetcar History with Henry Ewert

The city of Vancouver was but four years
old when its transit system began
operating, on June 27, 1890. Its streetcars
were state-of-the-art, and Vancouver
thereby was one of the world's very first
cities, young as it was, to offer its
inhabitants sophisticated, affordable
transportation. Henry Ewert, with his
extensive cache of early images in slide
form, will take us back to those times of
beginning, then forward into the
succeeding years. Toonie donation
appreciated.

we will continue along trails bounding an
Environmentally Sensitive Area within
Pacific Spirit Regional Park to look at the
structure and biology of the forest which
would have claimed the bog if the
restoration programme had not been
implemented.

collection of heritage trees at the
Riverview Arboretum in Coquitlam,
courtesy of the Riverview Horticultural
