Time for modern with Rayna Gillman
You do not want to miss renowned artist and teacher Rayna Gillman this month! Rayna
Gillman is an internationally known artist and teacher who whose work has appeared in
galleries and museums across the US. She works spontaneously in mixed media, often using
collage and printmaking techniques to add texture to her work.
Rayna brings her intuitive sense of color and design into her work and her classes, infusing
her students with a sense of play and encouraging them to use the words “what if?” as they
experiment in their own work. She was nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award in 2010
by Professional Quilter Magazine.
There are still a few spots left in her two workshops as well! Don’t miss you chance to learn
from this great teacher who will help you find your unique artist voice!
Thursday’s workshop, Endless Design Variations, you'll discover simple and exciting
variations on strips, squares, and rectangles. Using "what if?" to guide you, you'll quickly
and easily create one-of-a-kind units to use in endless combinations for your own original
quilt.
In Saturday’s class, Cinderella Quilts. Reinventing the UFO, get those UFOs out of
hiding, turn your rotary cutter into a magic wand and wave them over your
unfinished tops and orphan blocks. Work magic as you cut, add, delete, and
completely transform those stalled projects into beautiful new work you never
imagined they could be. Total fun!!
art!
Looking Ahead to May
Looking ahead: Virginia Greaves, a talented
local quilt artist, will be doing a trunk show and
lecture in May called "Journey of the Southern
Art Quilter". Virginia has gained international
recognition by winning many titles including
some at the International Quilt Festival in
Houston. Her stunning art ranges from portrait
quilts to animals to abstract!
Check out her extensive gallery on her website

Refreshments
April showers bring lots of time to do quilting
and maybe for those of you whose surnames
begin with
'H', 'I' or 'J'
time to decide what type of goody you will be
bringing to the guild meeting. Thank you for
those quilters who brought in a treat last
meeting. The cranberry bars and apple crumble
cake were delicious.

Greetings fellow Quilters!
We're now in my favorite month in Atlanta! I love
watching all the trees and bushes burst into
bloom. It's warming up, but there's no need for
air conditioning yet. By next month I'll want to
complain about the heat! What's not to like?
Unless you have allergies...
The best part about April this year is that we can
now definitively say that we are going to have a
Quilt Show!! We got so many beautiful entries.
We only wish we could take them all. Have you
volunteered yet? Be sure to try out our new
online sign up system. We have so many talented
quilters in the guild. It will be very exciting to see
all of our lovely quilts hanging together! It's all
thanks to YOU, so pat yourself on the back for
getting your entry done in time and then sign up
to be at the show. It's great fun!
If you want to try something you haven't done
before (and it's always good to stretch yourself!)
and you want to attempt to make a dent in all
those scraps you've been hoarding, then sign up
for Rayna Gillman's classes. She'll help you take
those scraps and ugly orphan blocks and make
them into something beautiful. Don't get hung up
because you think you don't do "modern". She
can help you make something uniquely yours.
I'll see you all at the April meeting. Until then,
sew on!
--Vickie
Why we love our Show!
Since I think our show is such fun, I decided to ask many from our Quilt Show Committee, "Why do
you love our show?" The responses were fabulous, so I thought I would share them with you. But I
would also love to hear your answers. Just email me at [email protected].

Looking Further Ahead
Renowned for her whimsical style, Mickey Depre considers herself both an art quilter and a
traditional quilter – all at the same time. Her newest book Pieced Hexies is a perfect example of
Mickey’s ability to combine old and new. Her colorful, playful approach to this time-tested shape
has introduced a whole new generation of quilters to myriads of designs and ideas.
Mickey remains in demand for her applique’ workshops that emphasize collage techniques, vibrant
color and lots of imagination and humor. Like many of us, she began with mending, garment making
and other crafts and then found the world of quilting. Beginning with traditional quiltmaking,
Mickey now describes her quilts as “whirlwinds of color, with oranges residing next to purples of all
shades in harmony.”
Go ahead and register for her two workshops, Pieced Hexies Buffet on Thursday, June 25 and Castle
Wall – The Block on Saturday June 27. The registration form is on the website and we are accepting
sign ups now. You will not be disappointed!
Community Quilts
Why do I love our Show?
Quilts, pillowcases and placemats! Oh, my.
More than 60 placemats were turned in at the
March meeting. Quilts and pillowcases are
beginning to pile up too. Join the stitching fun
and make something. Ideas and information
are found on the ECQG webpage.
http://ecqg.com/community-service/
Surrounded by hundreds of gorgeous quilts,
immersed in a riot of fabric and color, beguiled
by vendors displaying their tempting wares and
knowing that my friends, the talented members
of the greatest quilt guild in Georgia, are
responsible for putting it all together – what’s
not to love?
-- Pat Allen
We will celebrate the donations at the October
meeting - so get out that fabric and sew.

My favorite part of our guild meetings is show &
tell and I consider the quilt show the ultimate
show & tell! It’s a place where non-quilters can
see how quilting is evolving into an art. The
stories behind the quilts and the ways quilters
express their creativity are so interesting. If you
want to be inspired go to the quilt show!

Why I love our Show?
Where to start?!
• Three days to wander among over 350 quilts
made by so many people I know!
• So many chances to be inspired by amazing
artists and their creations! Lots of vendors and
shopping opportunities! (Note to self - Must
remember to set and stick to a budget!)
• The chance to volunteer and show support for
a craft that I love – the one that ‘stuck’!
• Best of all, the chance to invite friends and
family to see, in a very public way, what ‘this
quilting thing’ is all about! There is a reason
for that ‘fabric store’ in my house!
-- Shelby Smith
Sunshine
I know this time of year we all
need a little SUNSHINE! But, perhaps, you
know someone who could use an extra dose.
If you know a member who is experiencing a
serious illness, a hospitalization, or the loss of
a family member, we’d like to let them know
that ECQG CARES. I can’t do that unless you
send the information my way. Email me at
[email protected]
or call me at 770 424 7568 or 404 936 7568
and we’ll send some SUNSHINE their way.
Thank you.

Why do I love our Show?
To show my quilts in this premier event that our show has become is an honor to me. That should be
enough but there is much more that I really enjoy about the quilt show. There are those people
whose names I may have heard before and those I've never met whom I get to know by working
beside them in preparation for the show; there's the joy that comes from hanging the show &
looking at how beautiful the quilts are & seeing who has won ribbons at the Preview Party; then
meeting some of the families of other members & hosting our family & guests & showing our quilts
with pride. And then after it's all over, sitting back & realizing what a great show it was, & finally
reaping the financial rewards of the show with our great line up of guests speakers that is a big part
of our ranking as a nationally recognized guild.
– Ben Hollingsworth
Quilts, quilts, quilts and shopping, shopping, shopping!!!!!!
-- Denise Allee
Call me eclectic… When I look around my home, I see vintage, traditional, & contemporary; I see
colorful rainbows & intriguing black & white; I see many art forms. The same is true of our show &
our guild. We have so very many quilt styles displayed, & we have diverse backgrounds &
personalities in our guild-- all beautiful in their own way. That is why I love our show. That is why I
want to invite the world to come see, & share our passion. That is how I got hooked.
-- Carolyn Powers

Why do I love our Show?
I enjoy the camaraderie of the people and our guild members who have this love of quilting and
seeing the happiness on people's faces when they walk into the show - knowing they are going to see
beautiful quilts and the enjoyment received.
-- Carole Lubbers
When I think of our Quilt Show, I think of OPPORTUNITIES! Opportunities to be a part of something
wonderful. Opportunities to get to know members that I don’t have time to get to know at our
meetings. Opportunities to learn about members and where they can best share their
talents. When I was a very new member I volunteered at several different spots and spent 2 hours
with people that I did not know at all. It was an eye opening experience to get to know not just
people but the inner workings of our guild and the hard working people involved. I think working on
the show and AT the show is the lifeblood of our guild.
-- Jan Cunningham
• Because it gives every quilter the chance to be a star. For three wonderful days, her quilt can hang
with hundreds of others, making her famous to her friends and family. Every single quilt
contributes to the glow and sparkle of fabric, fiber, color, design and delight.
• Because together, Guild members create something that wouldn’t exist without us – Georgia
Celebrates Quilts. We learn so much about ourselves, each other, and our community as we
imagine, organize and pull together for a common purpose.
• Because the show creates a space in which fabric & art and creativity are at the forefront. Visitors,
vendors, quilters and guild members all interact in a different way. We talk about things we
wouldn’t otherwise; we see each other and our quilts in a different way & we just learn SO much.
In other words, I love the quilt show because it’s just magic!
-- Robin Meyer
Happy days, Spring has arrived!
It's exciting to have a 'New Bee' meeting because it gives me the opportunity to meet new(er)
members. There is always a round of questions about the Guild, about Bees so I appreciate Vickie
Lord and Andi Barni coming out for the meeting. With the upcoming quilt show, Carolyn Powers and
Jan Cunningham were able to answer their questions.
On the Bee horizon, we have in the works a new Bee in the Kennesaw, Acworth, Woodstock area;
and maybe another evening group. Details to follow, or email me since I'm working on this.
Suggestions, comments, thoughts - I'm just an email away!

Vickie Lord called the meeting to order at 11:05 and read a note from Joan Clabby thanking the Guild for honoring her
community service quilting over the years.
Vickie noted the publication of the minutes in the newsletter and asked for their approval. Pat Allen made a motion to
approve them as published, Carolyn Powers seconded, and the motion was approved unanimously.
Programs - Vickie reported on Programs for Christie Stevens, 3rd VP. The Programs Committee is developing a publicity
plan including the use of our Facebook page and outreach to other guilds. As of the meeting, 13 students were
registered for Charlotte Angotti’s classes, and 10 and 6 for Rayna Gillman’s classes on Thursday and Saturday,
respectively. Mickey Dupre will be sending samples shortly for use in publicizing classes. Vickie also reported that
online sign-up and payment for classes was under consideration. Michelle Rook will encourage the NewBees to
register for Charlotte Angotti if they are new to quilting.
Membership - Vickie and Michelle Rook reported for Jeanette Walton, 2nd VP. The workload is very high for this time
of year and Michelle has been helping Jeanette. Discussion ensued as to the security issues related to the
Membership Directory being online, even if it is password protected. It was decided that each time Jeanette sends
Carol Stanek an updated directory, Carol will email it to all members as an attached PDF.
Quilt Show – Carolyn Powers began her report on the Quilt Show by circulating a sign-up sheet for volunteers needed
for Raffle Quilt appearances. She also encouraged entries, which are coming in slowly, and talked about the need for
more small treasurers. Lots of volunteer opportunities remain.
Hospitality - Alycia Davis reported that we had 7 visitors in January and 1 in February.
Door Prizes – Judy Alexander reported that she has purchased door prizes for the next several months.
Community Service – Laura Bishop reported that she has all the records for the position and that we have accepted 13
pillowcases, 5 placemats and 9 quilts so far this year. Laura indicated that she will provide updated information for the
website, including information on how to prepare pillowcases and label quilts.
Show and Tell – Vickie led a discussion of when applause should be given. It was felt that each person should receive
applause, and the group volunteered to make sure that everyone was applauded.

Group in March. The February evening group meeting was cancelled due to weather. The rules are on the website,
and Melinda has created a Pinterest Board for the Challenge.
Website – Carol Stanek is investigating Paypal and form submission options.
With there being no further business, Vickie adjourned the meeting at 12:10pm.

East Cobb Quilters’ Guild General Meeting Minutes
The Catholic Church of St. Ann’s, Marietta, GA
March 27, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 9:35am by President Vickie Lord.
Minutes -- Vickie referenced the minutes of the February 27 meeting published in the newsletter and asked for a
motion to approve them. Michele Bautsch made the motion, which was seconded by Carole Lubbers. The motion
passed on a voice vote.
Treasurer’s Report – Amy Knoespel reported the following account balances: Guild - $28,954.17, Quilt Show $13,151.83 and Quilt Show CD - $30,290.21. The total of the accounts is $72,396.21. At Amy’s request, Carolyn
Powers, former Guild Treasurer, explained the need to keep a significant financial cushion available. Carolyn stated
that the Quilt Show costs about $47,000 to produce, up from $42,000 in 2013. We have looked into event insurance,
but it was too expensive, so we “self insure” for catastrophes. Carolyn, with comments from members, related that, in
recent years, loss of the venue, a hurricane, a tornado and 9/11 have each put the production of the show in doubt.
Carolyn also pointed out that programs (speakers and workshops) cost the guild about $18,000 a year. Not only do we
have the current expenses, but we have signed binding contracts with speakers up through 2017.
Quilt Show – Carolyn continued with a Quilt Show report, reminding the members that it was 3 months away. We
have over 360 quilts entered and today is the last day for entries. At the break, there will be volunteer sign-ups. On
April 15 at the Community Christian Church on Chastain Road at I-575, there will be a postcard workshop. Carolyn
introduced Lynn Rinehart, who is heading up the jurying and judging process and Vickie Lord and Devon Pfief, who will
layout the quilts in the show. The April meeting will feature Small Treasures and members are encouraged to bring
their small treasures to that meeting. Carolyn announced that all members should have received an email last night
announcing online sign-up for Hanging, Package Check and Hostesses.
Community Service – Laura Bishop announced that she was continuing to receive quilts for the Department of Family
and Childrens Services (DFCS), placemats for Meals on Wheels, and pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer. She also offered
labels for the DFCS quilts. Laura especially thanked the Mount Bethel Quilters for Christ who donated a large quantity
of placemats.
Bee Groups – Michelle Rook reported that the New Bees will meet on March 31 at 1pm at Whole Foods, and invited
anyone to attend. She also reported that there is interest in a bee in Woodstock and Canton.
Programs – Christie Stevens announced Charlotte Angotti would be our speaker today and that registration was open
for workshops with Rayna Gillman in April. Registration for Mickey Dupre’s classes in June will open later today.
Christie and Shari Chastain are available to take registrations at the break. Virginia Greaves will be our speaker in May.
Christie also reported that she had received a request from Sope Creek Elementary School for a quilter to help with
Pioneer Day. Lastly, Christie asked that Jan Cunningham’s copy of Rayna Gillman’s book be returned, as it was missing
after the February meeting.
Membership – Jeannette Walton announced that 110 members were present at the meeting, and that membership
renewals had been extremely busy this morning.
Sunshine – Jan Cunningham asked the membership to please let her know who needed a card from the Guild.
Photographer – Vickie asked that anyone interested in filling in for Photographer Cindy Richards when Cindy could not
attend please talk with Cindy.

East Cobb Quilters’ Guild Evening Meeting Minutes
March 26th, 2015
The meeting was called to order by Shelby Smith, evening leader at 6:50 p.m.
Evening speaker Charlotte Angotti explained her “no math” process of quilt making. She makes various units
(half/square triangles, 4 patches etc.) and then assembles them on a design wall. Once she is satisfied with her
“design” of units then she sews them together. Charlotte also entertained us with some of her interesting quilt making
stories.
2016 Challenge Quilts (Melinda Rushing) The theme for 2016 is Inspired by Dance. She has a Pinterest board with
some examples http://www.pinterest.com/gingkoquilter/quilts-that-dance/. Quilts do not have to any applique on
them. Challenge quilts are due at the January 2016 meeting.
Membership (Laura for Pat Decon) 27 members were in attendance. 4 guests were in attendance. Carol York passed
out membership cards.
Upcoming Programs (Christie Stevens)
April - Rayna Gillman – Modern Quilts, registration available on website
May - Kelly Nagel from Sulky threads
June - Mickey Depre – Pieced Hexies, registration for her workshops will be on the website shortly.
ECQG Georgia Celebrates Quilt Show (Carolyn Powers Jones)
Show dates are June 11-13 (Thursday – Saturday). 10am – 6pm each day. There are roughly 350 quilts that have been
entered so far. Next month bring small treasures to the meeting.
Various committee members were at the meeting to explain volunteer duties that are needed for upcoming Quilt
show. Please consider volunteering, as there is much to do. Everyone should receive an e-mail about the new
electronic signup facility that is available on the ECQC website (in member area). A list of the various committees and
their needs is also posted on the website.
New Bees (Michele Rook not in attendance) Next Newbie meeting will be on March 31st at Whole Foods.

Seeking Volunteers for Quilts of Valor
If you appreciate your FREEDOM and want to express how much it truly means to you, then here's an opportunity
you'll not want to miss.
Participate in the second 'Stitch-In' on Thursday, May 14, 2015, 9am-4pm. East Cobb Government Center, 4400 Lower
Roswell Rd., Marietta, GA.
Bring your machine, fabric and all quilting supplies needed to make patriotic red, white, blue &/or gold blocks.
Consider working with a partner and together make 12 blocks for a quilt.
I will have 108" wide red & blue backing as well as batting for anyone that expresses an interest in making a complete
top. (Do have the finished size of the top drawn out so I'll know how much fabric you'll need.)
Lunch will again, probably be provided - still working on it at this writing.
Reserve the dates NOW for the 2016 QUILTS OF VALOR Retreat to be held at the Toccoa Conference Center, Toccoa, GA
January 15-17, 2016. Cost: $170
Registration forms will be available at the April 24, meeting.

Marietta/Cobb Musesum Call for Quilts
The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art (MCMA)
has issued a call for entries for Metro
Montage XV, a juried exhibition of art works
set for exhibit at the Museum in late
summer. The deadline for entry is April 30,
2015. More information is available at the
Museum’s website,
http://www.mariettacobbartmuseum.org/m
etro-montage-xv.html. The online
information does not directly address
unframed fiber art, but Museum staff
confirmed that submissions of art quilts and
other textile pieces are welcome. Fiber
artists must provide whatever is needed to
hang or display their piece. For more
information, contact the Museum staff.
NCQS 2015 Quilt Symposium
Please note in your next newsletter that there are openings in the
classes being offered at the NCQS 2015 Quilt Symposium, May 28-31,
2015. This annual event will be held at Bonclarken Conference
Center in Flat Rock, NC. Information and registration materials are
available at www.westernncquilters.org.
In 2011, MCMA hosted an exhibit of quilts
awarded blue ribbons in past Georgia
Celebrates Quilts® shows. The exhibit was
very successful for the Museum – and great
fun for the Guild. Since that time, the
Museum has hosted other exhibits
showcasing fiber art in various forms. It
would be great to see some quilts among the
paintings and sculptures at this exhibit!
