Viceregal Lodge

The Viceregal Lodge in Shimla is an
imposing British-raj Palace constructed
under the supervision of Viceroy Lord
Dufferin in 1888, who used to live here.
Today it is known as Rashtrapati Niwas and
is located on the picturesque Observatory
hill of Shimla. The palace is constructed in
the famous Jacobethan style, which is a
popular English architectural design
depicting the Renaissance revival.

A gothic Victorian style marvel built some
122 years back in the colonial period of
India, Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex is
one of the oldest cultural complexes in the
state of Himachal Pradesh as well as India.
Located at Mall road, today it has gained the
status of a historic monument and attracts
history buffs from all across the country.
The humongous structure of
the cultural complex comprises many
sections. It has a City Museum, art gallery,
an old theater, amphitheater, a multipurpose Theater as well as a conference
hall. The art gallery has the contemporary
and traditional art of India displayed in a
beautiful manner. In the City museum you
can witness various historic forms of
region's art and crafts. The amphitheater
conducts
cultural performances and in
the old theater and the multi-purpose
theater you can see the classical events that
are held there.
The Gaiety, on The Ridge, was the place for
amateur theatricals during the Raj. After a
long restoration, it was made ready for

public viewing. The beautfiul theatre is tiny,
just nine rows deep, 12 seats across, with
the box of honour for the Viceroy and his
staff. The players on Gaiety’s stage have

Building (next to
Gaiety) is an imposing stone structure.
Watch out for the way it’s lit up at night.

is a historic palace that was built by Lord
Dufferin, who was the Viceroy of India from
1884–1888. Estwhile called the Viceregal
Lodge, is today the Rashtrapati Bhawan as
well as the Institute of Advanced Studies.
Most parts of the institute is closed for
public viewing, however the rest of the area
which is open attracts a big number of
tourists to the place.

famous monument in the city that houses
the Institute of Advance Studies. It is one of
the most influential reserch center in the
