FordNews Editor Kelvin Brown 01277 252102 [email protected] Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp shares his news and views T he Geneva Motor Show, the first international motor show of the season in Europe, is always a delight, as all manufacturers are anxious to show new directions for the year, with plenty of new models and concept cars wrapped together in a relatively compact display area. There was a mood of guarded optimism this year, with some recovery evident, albeit with some concern about over-capacity in the industry in Europe, where there is the capacity to build four cars for every three likely to be sold. New products and new technologies were at the forefront of an impressive Ford stand, with the B-MAX, the stunning Vertrek concept, the new Fiesta rally car and Focus BTCC car all demonstrating an exciting future for Ford. However, it reminds me that we already have showrooms crammed with excitement, especially with the medium car ‘portfolio’ – new Focus fivedoor, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX, Kuga, current model Focus (at very special value) and soon to be joined by the new Focus estate – what terrific choice in the medium car sector. Choice and excitement don’t stop there as nearly the entire range has been refreshed over the last two years. March is traditionally the single biggest sales month of the year, due to the registration plate change. The outlook for Ford is good with buoyant demand especially in the retail sector. March 2010 was a strong month, including 50,000 industry sales under the scrappage scheme – this year, without scrappage, we anticipate that the retail market will be only slightly smaller, with retail growth filling much of the scrappage gap. March is also a big month for commercial vehicles, and the commercial vehicle market is recovering rapidly this year – up by 30 per cent in the first two months, with Ford sales up by nearly 50 percent. Although I have been fortunate to have experienced many product launches, each individual new product gets the adrenalin flowing as the launch unfolds. Focus is no exception. We started with a few key journalists who drove the car in southern France towards the end of last year and took a further 100 to southern Spain in February. The next event with journalists was in Scotland in March, a 24-hour event for further driving and presentations. In February, we entertained 2,300 dealer delegates at the Magna centre near Sheffield, to test drive and learn the inner facts of the new Focus. Following this, key fleet customers were introduced to the new car. Meanwhile, the manufacturing launch is underway, and we had delivered 7,000 Focus models to dealers by the beginning of March. In parallel, the advertising launch is underway with TV adverts airing towards the end of March. We want everyone to know about Focus and Ford’s new user-friendly technologies. Months of preparation and enormous teamwork will be followed by a ramp-up of sales momentum over the coming months. With all checkpoints ‘green’ the all-new Focus is set for sales success in the UK. Ford commercial vehicles (CVs) continue to perform strongly, as highlighted in the official sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). These show that without the benefit of the scrappage incentive scheme total UK car sales last month were down 7.7 per cent to 63,424 units. Ford car sales of 7,542 were down from 9,915 in February 2010. Ford’s retail car market share in February was 11.2 per cent, 0.7 percentage points up compared with the same period in 2010. Focus is the UK car sales leader for the year with the Fiesta in second place. Ford people carriers were sales winners in February with C-MAX range sales up from 290 to 475 compared with February 2010 and Galaxy increasing sales from 271 to 387. Sales of the new C-MAX range rocketed in February Ford’s total CV share for the month was up from 23.4 to 25.1 per cent, compared with February 2010 and total Ford CV sales were up from 2,493 to 3,371. All Ford commercials (Fiesta Van, Transit Connect, Ranger and Transit) increased sales and share, compared with February 2010. Transit sales, for example, were 2,631, up from 1,864, and its share of medium CV sales was 28.7 per cent, up 0.4 percentage points compared with February 2010. Ford of Britain managing director, Nigel Sharp, said: “February is effectively a curtain raiser for the plate change month of March, when Ford customers will have the first chance to experience the exciting, new Focus at the head of the Company’s best ever vehicle range. “In addition to the Focus there is the new C-MAX range and a newly refreshed large car range together with a number of new low CO2 powertrain options.” Leading the way with 3D adverts Shoppers try out the new interactive 3D advertising campaign 4 FordNews April 2011 An outdoor augmented-reality campaign featuring the new Grand C-MAX on interactive screens has been run at selected UK shopping centres using 3D technology. The campaign, created by advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather and digital production company Grand Visual, allowed people to explore miniaturised 3D ‘virtual’ models of the cars on screen and in the palm of their hand. The agency claims it is the first UK outdoor advert to use 3D depth-imaging technology. Users were able to interact with the car simply by holding their hands up to the screen. Virtual buttons allowed users to choose the colour, open doors, fold the seats, turn the car 360 degrees and select demonstrations of the car’s key features such as Active Park Assist. The user interface was based on natural movement, allowing any passer-by to immediately start interacting with the screen. Ford of Britain marketing director Mark Simpson, said: “Using live interactive outdoor campaigns is a great way to really engage with the audience in a way that is not possible with static posters. This enabled us to create a targeted and tactical campaign that is relevant and fun to use.” Ogilvy & Mather associate creative partner Andy Dibb, added: “It’s eye-catching, intrusive, ground-breaking and brings to life ‘innovation in your hands’.” Award-winning Ford Last year Ford, its vehicles and technologies won 27 prestigious awards in the UK, and 2011 is off to a winning start with more plaudits from the media Ford has been given two prestigious awards in the last month, while Fiesta, C-MAX and Grand C-MAX and Mondeo have also been honoured. The new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX were voted best new company cars of the year at the Fleet News Awards, while Ford has been named franchise of the year by readers of AM, and two dealer groups have also picked up trophies. AM readers shortlisted three automotive brands based on the latest product range in their dealers’ showrooms, the support offered to its dealers by the manufacturer and how the partnership enhances customer service and satisfaction levels. Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp, who collected the award in front of more than 1,150 industry colleagues, said: “As the all-new Ford Focus follows new C-MAX into showrooms, and Ford works ever closer with dealers on offering the best sales and service experience, AM readers have recognised the positive impact on the blue oval brand.” Driving improved satisfaction among Ford customers is the Company’s Viewpoint programme, which has provided dealers with customer feedback about their sales and service record for more than 20 years and is a key factor in Fiesta, C-MAX and Mondeo also honoured Ford has secured a double victory in the inaugural carbuyer.co.uk awards. The specialist car buying advice site, a sister title to AutoExpress and Evo Ford of Britain fleet director Kevin Griffin, left, receives the best new company car award from television presenter Mary Nightingale producing the results which helped win the AM award. Another Ford success was the induction of Mike Muscroft to the AM Hall of Fame. Chairman and chief executive of Ford dealer TC Harrison, Mike has enjoyed 50 years in the motor industry as TC Harrison this year celebrates 80 years of trading and Ford of Britain its own centennial. Ford dealer Lifestyle picked up the Best Retailer of the Year and Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp, left, collects the AM Best Franchise award from Jim Monteith of sponsor Ai Automotive Best Dealer Group (more than 10 sites) awards. The Essex Auto Group, which includes Essex Ford, won Best Retail Group (up to 10 sites). For the Fleet News Awards, the C-MAX and Grand C-MAX were praised for their low costs, suitability for business use and the manufacturer support. And in a double triumph, the C-MAX models were also named best people carrier in the same awards. TC Harrison’s Mike Muscroft, left, is confirmed into AM magazine’s Hall of Fame by Dennis Ryan of Motrade.com magazines, named the Fiesta as its best small car while Mondeo was named best large family car. The Fiesta’s citation read: “The Fiesta isn’t just a great car to look at, it’s extremely well built and fun to drive, too.” And on Mondeo, the judges said: “Almost flawless! There’s no better vehicle to cover long distances in .” And website Parkers named the CMAX 1.6 TDCi Titanium as its best MPV (£18,000+). FN 5 East is best in district challenge league table Company centenary celebrations Ford of Britain celebrated its 100th birthday on 8 March and this year also sees Ford marking 100 years of vehicle manufacturing in the UK. The history of those first 100 years is captured in entertaining, and comprehensive fashion in Eric Dymock’s “The Ford in Britain Centenary File”. Dove Publishing’s (www.dovepublishing.co.uk) book, which retails at £27.50, provides a fascinating insight into 100 years of Company history, with detailed descriptions of the vehicles that have touched the nation more than any other car company. Eric Dymock starts, of course, with the Model T, and writes with authority about the Ford range as it developed over the decades, including tractors, trucks and military vehicles, right up to the 2012 Focus ST. Ford-related events which celebrate the centenary are being held around the country including at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Hampshire, and the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon, Warwickshire. This year’s Goodwood Revival, the country’s premier historic motoring event, will see a significant number of classic Fords take to the circuit. Ford of Britain Eastern field sales team are the district champions, topping the UK annual league table to scoop the district award. The district challenge is a league table that gives a score for sales performance and customer satisfaction levels, awarding points to the four regional field teams for retail and Motability sales, customer satisfaction and dealership mystery shops. The award was presented to district manager Nick Themistocleous by Ford of Britain sales director Jon Wellsman, who said: “We must continually be looking to raise our sales and customer satisfaction performance across the network. “The strong performance of Eastern District is testament to their One Ford approach and the work they have done with the network to ensure the whole team is moving in the same direction.” Nick Themistocleous, added: “Everyone in the Eastern field sales team has worked incredibly hard to achieve this success. The car zone managers work closely with their dealer accounts and their counterparts in Ford Credit and aftersales to ensure they adopt a One Ford approach to engaging with their dealers and raising the performance bar.” Top priority for all the districts in March was working with the dealers on the launch of the new Focus in what is traditionally the biggest sales month of the year. Eastern district’s latest initiative is the creation of a Facebook site to further connect dealers to their district office. The site will contain contact information, news and marketing materials and dealer feedback. Nick added: “Our dealers are the best in the business and we will continue to offer them as much support as we can to ensure we stay ahead of the competition.” The Eastern field sales team is responsible for an area that includes East Anglia, London and the south east, and stretches north to Nottingham, Derby and Lincoln. The five car sales zone managers and small fleet business manager are backed up by colleagues in Ford Credit and FCSD. Dagenham steps up for Oliver Craig and Oliver Holmes by dad’s lorry on the Dagenham estate 6 FordNews April 2011 Nick Thermistocleous, front left, receives the award from Jon Wellsman A fund-raising ball supported by Dagenham drivers raised more than a quarter of the total needed to send a little boy to America for a life-changing operation. Driver Craig Holmes’ sevenyear-old son Oliver was born 13 weeks premature seven years ago; he suffers from cerebral palsy, has to wear special support clothing and splints every day and spends stints in a wheelchair. The family had thought there was no hope until other local boys, including his friend, Dagenham toolmaker John Wright’s son Jordon, were treated in America. Now Oliver is off to Missouri for an operation on his spine. Craig said that although he’s apprehensive, Oliver is mostly excited, and is looking forward to getting some new American trainers. Fund-raising to collect £40,000 needed for the treatment and travel began at the end of last year – and so far £32,000 has been collected – including £10,260 at the ball held in Orsett Hall, Essex. Craig, and wife Claire, thanked everyone for their support. Craig said: “We cannot thank everyone enough for their support which could make all the difference to Oliver’s future.” Lizz McCarthy launches up the quarter mile Lizz reaches speeds of up to 168mph on her specially built drag bike Living life in the (very) fast lane Daventry Customer Relationship Centre (CRC) call handler Lizz McCarthy must qualify as one of the fastest women in Ford, spending her weekends launching a 500bhp drag racing bike down the quarter mile! After more than 10 years supporting her partner’s drag racing exploits, Lizz decided that it was her turn to grab hold of the throttle, and has started competing in her own right. During 2010, she took to the strip on board a 1,428cc nitrous oxide-fuelled drag bike, which puts 500bhp to the track through a tortured 10-inch wide slick tyre. Despite her limited experience as a racer, Lizz was able to achieve a scorching 8.9 second quarter mile, and has reached speeds of up to 168mph. “Following many years in the support crew, drag racing had become a way of life for me,” Daventry CRC call handler Lizz McCarthy said Lizz . “But it had got to the stage where I wanted my own taste of the action, and I thought ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’! “When I was young, I was always mad on horses. But that’s all changed now, and I’ve swapped horses for horsepower,” added Lizz. For 2011, Lizz – who joined the Ford CRC team last October, just before the move to its new Daventry base – plans to race at six events, and hopes to bring her times down into the seven second bracket. One of the highlights is expected to be the ‘For Ladies That Launch’ competition on 1112 June, which is raising money for the Refuge charity that supports women and children threatened by domestic violence. Held at the Shakespeare County Raceway, this competition celebrates the contribution of women in motor sport, and follows the success of the first such event held in 2010. n To follow her on-track exploits, to support her racing programme or to make a contribution to the Refuge charity, contact Lizz via her website at www.nitrousjunkie.com Ford backs Rotary polio appeal Polio eradication is a top priority for Rotarians, which is why the president of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, Jim Moulson, visited Warley to meet Ford of Britain chairman Joe Greenwell and discuss how Ford can help drive polio out. Local Rotarians were on hand all day to sell purple crocuses – the symbol of the End Polio Now Joe Greenwell, left, with members of the Rotary and a Focus which was adorned for the day with purple crocus logos at Warley campaign – and cakes, which raised £545. With matching funding from Rotary and Gates Foundation, it will pay for immunisation for 2,725 children in the world’s remaining polio hotspots of Afghanistan, Nigeria, India and Pakistan. The colour purple is significant because as each child receives the vaccine, their little finger is dipped in purple dye. In October last year, the Rotary Club of Brentwood Breakfast planted 1,500 purple crocuses in front of the Warley offices to publicise their campaign. FN 7 Charles is football focused A Ford man obsessed with the beautiful game is looking for more football enthusiasts to join an initiative uniting workers across Southampton. Charles Chiguvare set up a five-a-side league at the plant to boost morale and bring workers together as part of One Southampton. The league, which kicked off the 2011 season in February, is going well – but Charles, who works in Special Vehicle Operations, would like to see more players coming on board. “The more players we get,” he said, “the more fun we have.” When he’s not at work, Charles spends much of his time playing football or coaching others – and he’s convinced that lessons you learn on the pitch are beneficial in the workplace too. “A while back, there was a series of meetings with management and all the companies working on site about trying to bring good understanding with everyone working at Ford and I suggested the idea of starting a football league to my then foreman,” said Charles. “I thought it would help promote teamwork and he gave me the go-ahead.” The league, which Charles organises with some help from colleagues, brings together people from across the plant, Ford employees and contractors alike – and from every level. Even plant manager Thomas Fischer plays when he can, in the managers’ team Body Parts. He also presented the trophies at the end of the first season last year. “In his speech he said this is the sort of thing Charles Chiguvare, second left, wants to see more players in the five-a-side league that should be encouraged as it promotes good teamwork,” recalled Charles, who joined Ford in 2004. Charles devotes much of his free time to football, coaching an under-15 side in which his son plays, and playing in a veterans’ league. As well as looking for new players and teams, Charles also wants to find sponsors for the league, to cover the small cost of hiring the pitch at a nearby leisure centre each week. Players of every level are welcomed – and encouraged to have a drink with other players afterwards. Other players in the league recognise Charles’ commitment and find his enthusiasm contagious. Referee Chris Ventham, from Body Construction, said: “It wouldn’t happen without Charles.” For Charles, it’s a way to do his bit for the Company – and a passion.“I’ve been playing since I was a child and I couldn’t do without it,” said Charles. “Through the league, I’ve got to know some people I would never have known even if I worked at Ford for 20 years.” n For more details, contact Charles on 07740 799105. Chris’ eggs-ellent fund-raising idea One man’s quest to make sure hard-up children get a fair deal at Easter and Christmas has led to his plant “adopting” the charity involved. Chris Ward has been involved in helping on bike runs collecting Easter eggs and toys for needy kids across the east end of London for 25 years. For the past eight he has been urging Ford colleagues and fellow motorcyclists across Dagenham to join in and support Newham-based charity Community Links. Now Stamping and Tooling Operations’ (DS&TO) charity committee has recognised Chris’ 8 FordNews April 2011 Chris Ward: Easter egg appeal efforts, and is forming a partnership with Community Links to promote its appeals in plant. Posters are up, and the word is out – please donate Easter eggs to prevent some youngsters going without. Committee chair, financial controller Dave Brown said: “This is a really worthwhile charity which supports the worst off in this area. I am sure we will all do what we can to help others who are struggling.” Even though Press Shop quality control inspector Chris is too unwell to ride his motorbike this year, he is determined to drive his car filled with eggs in support of this year’s Easter egg appeal run on 9 April. As Chris, who now has a son of his own, said: “The poorest kids, those who go without all the time, miss out at Christmas and Easter too. “Knowing that we do really make a difference to kids with very little else to look forward to this Easter makes this worthwhile.” n To donate Easter eggs, contact DS&TO community partnerships co-ordinator Patsy Morrison on [email protected] To join the ride see the Community Links website at www.communitylinks.org TOps Focus launch praised Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp thanked Transport Operations (TOps) for making sure deliveries of the new Focus to dealers met high customer demand. On a visit to the Dagenham transporter fleet in March he said: “I am delighted to see for myself how the team manage deliveries. We had just the right number of new Focus in place for 1 March. “We could not have asked for a better launch.” TOps manages deliveries throughout the UK. UK TOps manager Paul Arrowsmith said: “It was thanks to efforts from the whole team that we met our delivery targets, and I would like to thank everyone involved for making that happen.” Nigel met driver Gary Scott, who has driven the charity Macmillan-branded transporter for four years. To reflect the levels of technology on the new Focus, a high-tech venue was chosen for the event: the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham. More than 2,000 dealer staff attended the one-day event, gaining an insight into the new model and the best ways to introduce the new technology to customers. “The Focus brings an unprecedented level of technology to the C segment, and this provides our dealer staff with exciting new opportunities,” explained Stuart Harris, manager, Ford College strategy and integration. “Our training programme was designed to highlight the wealth of innovative n The all-new Ford Focus is set to continue the model’s success story, which saw the UK favourite enter the March plate-change month as 2011 best seller. Over the weekend of 12/13 March, Ford’s 550-strong dealership network welcomed customers new and old to its nationwide showrooms, eager to see the blue oval’s new star. Focus training was based at the Magna Science Adventure Centre features available on the car, and the different ways dealer staff can communicate these.” The Focus training programme was put together by a Ford College team led by Stuart, in conjunction with medium car product manager David Calder, Howard Kee and Nigel Pointer from the Ford experiential marketing team and the events agency Imagination. Priced from £15,995, every Focus comes with voice-activated Bluetooth, USB connectivity, DAB digital radio, Thatcham Category 1 alarm and a Torque Vectoring Control system as standard - the latter optimises engine torque distribution between both driven wheels and mimics a limited slip differential. Frugal new Dagenham-built 1.6 TDCi The programme involved classroom-based seminars, interactive sessions comparing the Focus to its competition, and driving exercises with both road and circuit routes. The seminars addressed key aspects of the Focus, including the innovative driver assistance technologies, the low-CO2 ECOnetic technologies, and the vehicle’s outstanding design and craftsmanship. Sessions also looked in more detail at the typical Focus customer and how best to engage them about the new model, and discussed the growing role of social media – such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – in the way customers gain information. The driving exercises also gave the opportunity to experience the new Active Park Assist semi-automatic parking system, which is available for the first time on a Focus. diesel-powered versions of the new Focus deliver combined economy of more than 67mpg, while powertrains featuring Ford’s new 1.6 EcoBoost turbo petrol engines return more than 47mpg on the combined cycle. Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp, said: “Our new Focus delivers a level of refinement and comfort, combined with hi-tech features and connectivity, not previously found on a volume car in this sector. Dealers are ready with enough new Focus to keep the car in pole position.” About 55 per cent of UK cars ordered are Zetec series, 25 per cent top-end Titanium models and the balance Edge. Estate deliveries will start next month to bring this body style to dealerships by May. FN 9 Dagenham safety review An idea to prevent damage to lorry air lines was admired by the Company’s top two safety minds on a visit to Dagenham in March. Dr Greg Stone, director, Occupational Health and Safety and his number two, Chris Petersen, were on a global review of Ford plants which included a two-week European tour starting in Cologne and ending in Valencia. In Dagenham they joined the regular safety walks in Stamping and Tooling, Engine Plant, the Diesel Centre and Transport Operations, flagging up concerns and giving feedback. They described the drivers and fitters initiative, of a sliding “Mavis rail”, as “excellent”. This rail prevents the curly air lines and electrical feed which join the tractor cab to its trailer from getting caught up, overstretched or breaking on tight turns. The latest design was developed over a News in brief Cortina celebrations Above: Dr Greg Stone, left, and Chris Petersen took an in-depth look around Dagenham during their visit and met many members of the workforce number of years by a group of supervisors and union representatives from the Central Repair Garage and the truck fleet, following a number of benchmarking exercises. UK Transport Operations manager Paul Arrowsmith said: “This design is the most effective yet and improves safety, reduces maintenance and hence helps us to operate cost-effective service.” The Cortina is 50 years old next year, and the Mk 1 Cortina Owners’ Club is planning to mark the occasion with a number of events. The club – which will be 20 years old – will celebrate its annual show at the Stratford-upon-Avon racecourse in August 2012. At the event last year 300 cars were assembled, and organiser Brian Raymond is hoping for a special turn-out for the car’s golden jubilee. Brian is inviting former Ford employees who were involved in the car’s design and manufacture to join in. Because bride-to-be Kate has written to Alan’s organisation showing an interest in the new mental and emotional health charity he has founded – and he’s hoping she’ll be its patron. Qualified clinical hypnotherapist Alan, who has worked for Ford for more than 10 years, founded the charity ChangeZ to plug the gap in care available from the private sector and the NHS. Alan said: “We have already attracted interest from the public, the media and fellow counsellors. Radio and newspaper coverage, and high-profile patrons, all help raise the profile of the charity. “All too often we hear from people who have had to wait between six and 12 months for an Dunton Sigma powertrain engineer Alan Piper has founded a new charity NHS appointment, only to find they can only see therapists for a limited time. The private option, having to pay up to £250 an hour, is usually not possible for the people we see. “We see clients for as long as they need, without any fees. We do ask for donations, but only what clients can afford, which is sometimes as little as £1.” Alan’s motivation in setting up the charity with his partner Kate Hudson-Hall was failing to find the help he needed during an emotional crisis in his 40s. In only 18 months ChangeZ has proved a success. The 22 therapists allow the charity to help 40 clients with problems ranging from stress to severe mental and physical abuse, from phobias to the most common, family crises and relationship breakdown. n For more information go to www.changezcharity.com or email [email protected] Kevin Lazell’s inaugural Dunton 10-mile run attracted 132 runners and raised £3,500 for Essex hospice St Luke’s. These Hull College students pictured are working on two scrap engines – unsaleable warranty and testing units – from Dagenham. The college’s other diesel engines date back to 1995. Motor vehicle workshop tutor Scott Irwin (pictured in red overalls) said: “Thanks to Ford, our trainees gain experience on the very latest engine technology available.” Dagenham engine evaluation supervisor Steve Plaxton, who manages the scheme, said: “We donate around four engines each year to schools and colleges to allow them to benefit from waste products which would otherwise be scrapped.” Mounted on stands, the 2.0-litre Puma and 1.4-litre Tiger engines allow mechanics to carry out a range of tasks including removing cylinder heads, pistons and fuel injection systems. Ford Mobility dealer relationship manager David Potter, left, hands over the prize cheque to Sue Humphreys, with Ford Retail group Motability manager Malcolm Tutton and Joe O’Leary of Dagenham Motors Gearing up for Motability Ford is looking towards a bigger share of the Motability market in 2011, partly because of the launch of the new Focus which is expected to account for more sales than the out-going model. “In 2010 Ford supplied 43,000 cars to the Motability market, 33 per cent of them Focus. “We would expect the new Focus to grow share this year,” said Ford Mobility dealer relationship manager David Potter. Motability is a charity that leases cars to people who use all or part of the higher rate mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement to obtain a vehicle on its contract hire scheme. The £51.40 weekly allowance is sufficient for a wide choice of cars, including Ford Ka, Fiesta and Focus. If someone wants a bigger vehicle such as an S-MAX or Galaxy, they can pay a premium at the start of the contract. Focus was Ford’s most popular Motability car in 2010, followed by Fiesta, C-MAX and S-MAX. There is a higher percentage of estates and MPVs – which allow mobility scooters and wheelchairs to be carried – than in the overall market. Not surprisingly, automatics make up almost a third of vehicles supplied, but less than seven per cent are adapted for use by a disabled driver, and the majority of those adaptations are simply changes to hand controls to operate the brake and accelerator, although more complex adaptations can be made by a specialist company if required. A competition run on the ford.co.uk website to win the equivalent of a year’s higher rate mobility allowance (£2,553), was won by a woman who runs an amputee support group in Surrey. When told she had won, Sue Humphreys said: “I am still on a high from taking delivery of my new Galaxy and now this. How wonderful. “My first car was a Ford which I had for about five years, my next car was a new Mk 2 Escort which I had for 14 years and now I’ve returned to the fold with my Galaxy, and I just adore it,” she said. “Thank you Ford – I can certainly feel the difference.” May UK SHORT BREAKS EXCLUSIVELY FOR ADULTS SAVE UP TO 25% Off 2011 brochure prices all year round * Half Board Breaks from only £224 † pp Saving of £75 Littlecote House Hotel, Berkshire TO BOOK CALL OUR PRIVILEGE HOLIDAY TEAM on 0800 1 388 399 quote HG368 OR VISIT www.warnerleisurehotels.co.uk/phc (lines open 7 days a week 9am- 9pm) 47778 *Save up to 25% offer excludes Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year, Special Themed breaks, Spa breaks and 2 night midweek breaks. Peter, who retired in 2005 following a 36-year career with the Company in IT, has already cycled 3,000 miles from the top to the bottom of Australia, toured England on his bus pass, cycled around Wales and taken part in some of the most demanding sailing races in the world, including the Fastnet, crossing the Atlantic and racing from Sydney to Hobart. Peter, 64, said: “I’ve always enjoyed travelling and I’ve been sailing for many years, plus I got cycling again in 2005. When I retired I chose a pair of bicycles as my leaving gift. We also have two sons who have lived and travelled in various countries, so we have visted them too. “For the Australia trip, I was invited to take part in the SydneyHobart sailing race, and thought In action on choppy seas during the Sydney to Hobart race Peter during his trip to Australia that if I’m going to travel that far, I want to see a bit of the country so decided to cycle while there. “The reason for doing these trips is simple: you only live once.” There have been highs and lows during Peter’s adventures; the toughest being the 2006 Round Britain and Ireland sailing race which saw Peter and the crew battling for 14 days nonstop against strong winds, with just four hours’ sleep at a time. And there was the time when the crew had a man go overboard on a foul night in the Channel, struggling for 13 minutes to get him back on board while battling gales and 15-foot waves. But the highs have been amazing. Peter added: “I had the most amazing adrenaline rush skiing the Mont Fort glacier in Verbier, and seeing Madeira appear at dawn while sailing from Galicia to the Canary Islands was amazing. It was also great to sail into Hobart on December 30.” Peter has always kept himself fit by playing team games, primarily rugby, and also by running, including the Ford halfmarathon. Peter and his wife, Mollie, live in Hertfordshire and keep in contact with current and former colleagues. During his time with the Company, Warley was Peter’s long-term base, but work took him across European offices and even further afield to Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires. He also spent on average a week a month travelling to Detroit between 1996 and 2000. And as for future trips? Peter said: “There are no firm plans yet, but on the agenda is walking the Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, and cycling along Route 66 in the States. “This summer, I’ll probably cycle to visit an ex-Ford colleague who runs a jazz festival in the south of France.” n To see what Peter’s been up to recently, go to one of his blogs at http://averagepomonabike. blogspot.com FN 15 Bright future for Ford CVs Commercial vehicle director Steve Clary looks ahead to a successful 2011 for Ford n “Transit has been an iconic product for us since launch in 1965 – it has been at the top of the sales chart since the day it was launched and we celebrated 45 years of Transit and 45 years of CV market leadership last year. “At the CV Show we will unveil our 2011 Stage V Transit. The current model continues to be an outstanding success – taking over one in three of all one- and two-tonne sales in the UK. That success is built upon listening to our customers and ensuring, wherever possible, we have a product developed that meets the need of all operators. Demand for the current variants remains as strong as ever due to its very competitive cost of ownership story.” T he outlook for commercial vehicle sales is very good for Ford this year, according to commercial vehicles director Steve Clary (pictured right). “The early signs for 2011 are very encouraging – and I know we have the product, dealers and appetite to substantially grow our volume this year,” he said. “We saw in 2010 the first signs of recovery in the CV industry, particularly in the medium segment where we are very strong with Transit. “The market accelerated in the second half of 2010 and has grown in 2011, which is very, very encouraging.” Overall, the January market was up 45 per cent versus the same month last year, and in n All 2011 diesel Transits will be fitted with the new global Puma engine built at Dagenham and all will meet Euro V emission standards; this new engine produces more power and torque. Six-speed transmissions will be standardised across the range and longer service intervals – 50,000kms/two years – introduced to help reduce operator cost and cut vehicle downtime. A 12year anti-corrosion warranty is also being introduced. Dunton duo help restore a classic The restored 1934 Ford AA truck on Islay 16 FordNews April 2011 A 1934 Ford AA truck left rotting in a field on the remote Scottish Isle of Islay has been restored to its former glory thanks to two current and one former Ford employees. Dunton vehicle safety manager Paul Fay and homologation supervisor Andy Bush – members of the 20year-old Basildon Malt Whisky Circle – visited the island last January on their “annual pilgrimage” to check on the progress of their casks of whisky. On this particular visit distillery manager Duncan McGillivray, who knew that they worked for Ford, showed them the restoration project he had undertaken – the 1934 Ford Model AA which has spent its life on Islay. By the time they got to see it the rotten wood on the vehicle had been removed, leaving a recognisable chassis and powertrain... plus a giant puzzle of parts. As Paul said: “It was a bit like doing a jigsaw puzzle “Transit is extremely strong in the one and two tonne segments. It’s the absolute backbone of the CV market. Year to date our one the medium segment, where the Transit is extremely strong, it was up 60 per cent. In February the overall market was up 22 per cent, with a 37 per cent increase in demand for medium commercials. tonne segment share is 36 per cent and two tonne share 43 per cent. Our performance is on the back of a very strong product offering. Transit helped with the significant growth in Ford CV sales in 2010, up 12.3 per cent compared with 2009. Transit sales on their own were up 25.9 per cent while Fiesta Van was up 28.3 per cent. There was an 18.4 per cent increase in UK CV sales in 2010, compared with 2009 and it is predicted that this positive trend will continue through 2011 with UK CV sales increasing by 5.3 to 232,000 units. Ranger to set a new standard The all-new Ranger, which will also be on display at the CV Show, has best-in-class safety features, towing capability, service intervals, wading depth, double cab rear legroom and interior noise levels. It is the largest truck in its segment and has class-leading CO2 emissions and fuel economy, as well as best-in-class turning circle, payload and volume, power and torque, from the engine, ESP off-road system, interior comfort and pedestrian protection. “New engines, transmission, chassis and the implementation of state-of-the-art technologies, make the all new Ranger a major leap forward for Ford in the 4x4 pick-up segment,” said Steve. Adding in the latest Ford technologies, found in much of the car range, means that the all new Ranger is dramatically improved in terms of the driver environment. “Electronic shift from two to four-wheel drive while on the move, state-of-the-art in-cab entertainment, integrated controls on the steering wheel and hands-free voice control and Bluetooth connectivity mean that the all new Ranger truly is a vehicle worthy of carrying the blue oval,” Steve added. n “The 2011 Transit will be best in class for fuel economy and CO2 output. The new entry level 2011 Stage V Transit with 100PS and six-speed transmission as standard achieves a massive £1,600 fuel saving over 80,000 miles versus the current entry level model,” said Steve. “This saving can be achieved today with our Econetic derivative, but the new 2011 Transit Econetic saves a further £1,000 over today’s Econetic model – therefore if you choose a 2011 Econetic over today’s entry level vehicle you can save £2,600 on fuel alone.” “Add in the savings operators get from extended service intervals and the 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, and we believe we have a very compelling customer proposition.” without the picture on the lid, and with an unknown number of missing and/or damaged pieces.” Having scoured the Company for engineers’ drawings, manuals, service books, pictures, photos and listings, the duo ended up at the Dagenham Heritage Centre. With the help of the centre’s resident engineers Ivan Bartholomeusz and Colin Gray, they spent a day pouring over the collection’s own 1931 AA truck – making notes and taking hundreds of photos . They sent all the information back to Islay, and one year later Andy returned to see the fully restored vehicle. He said: “It looks amazing, and is a tribute to the expertise of those Dagenham workers who made it back in the 1930s, and their modern-day equivalents on Islay who took the time and trouble to lovingly restore this fantastic, functional vehicle.” Paul added: “I like the fact that the original truck was driven the 570 miles to Islay from Essex nearly 80 years ago, and now a group of us regularly do the same trip in a Galaxy.” Pictured right: Scottish farmer David McLellan, left, Paul Fay and Andy Bush from Dunton and distillery manager Duncan McGillivray with the chassis FN 17 100 years of moto Henry Ford was the first man to win a race in a Ford vehicle in 1901. The same engine, in different guises, would go on to win 155 Grands Prix over the next 15 years in the hands of greats such as Nelson Piquet, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt and Sir Jackie Stewart. By the late 1980s, the DFV had become the HB and this unit went on to win 11 races before the Zetec V8 took Michael Schumacher to his first world title in 1994. By 1996 a new V10 engine had been designed for the Stewart Grand Prix team, and latterly Jaguar, before Ford retired from Formula 1 in 2004. The Company’s last F1 win came in 2003, with Giancarlo Fisichella winning the Brazilian Grand Prix in a Jordan-Ford. The early years Henry Ford was the first person to win a race in a Ford car, taking his 26bhp 1901 Racer to victory in a 10-lap race on a one-mile oval at the Detroit Driving Club at Grosse Pointe. He promptly retired from competition after his victory as he didn’t enjoy racing, but it set in motion a series of events which established the Ford Motor Company and laid a foundation for further motorsport success. With the arrival of the Model T in 1908, motorsport participation blossomed, with drivers taking their modified Ts to the oval tracks of America. In 1912, Henry Ford came to visit his new factory at Trafford Park, Manchester. While he was in England, he went to watch the August Bank Holiday meeting at Brooklands in Surrey. A special race was organised for Model T Fords, and Mr Ford presented a silver cup to Ford dealer A.E.George, who had won this “capital race” at a speed of nearly 57 mph. Formula Ford Formula Ford has the longest and most illustrious pedigree of any single-seater championship in the world. Since its introduction in 1967, Formula Ford has given thousands of young drivers and technicians unrivalled racing experience, and produced 10 Formula 1 world champions: Jenson Button, James Hunt, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jody Scheckter, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen. The Formula Ford concept is simple: teams can design and build their own chassis, but they must all use the same 1600cc Ford Duratec engine. 18 FordNews April 2011 Rallying Ford is the most successful manufacturer in the history of the World Rally Championship, and continues to be so thanks to the stunning 1-2-3 scored by the new Fiesta RS WRC on the first round of this year’s championship. Ford has a long and successful history in rallying, from an Anglia winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1936 through the glory years of the Escort and latterly, the Focus. And the motorsport centre at Boreham was behind this run of success for more than 40 years. From when it opened in 1963 to it closing in 2004, Boreham’s team masterminded Ford’s worldwide rallying success. In those years, great names such as Roger Clark, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Bjorn Waldegard, Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae steered Ford to victory on rally stages around the world in iconic cars such as the Escort Twin Cam, RS1600 and RS Cosworth, Zephyr, Cortina, RS200 and Focus RS. Formula 1 Ford is synonymous with the Cosworth engine in Formula 1, and between them the two have notched up 176 Grand Prix victories. The story started in 1966 when Keith Duckworth (one of the Cosworth founders) signed a deal with Ford to develop a 3.0-litre engine. This spawned the legendary DFV Saloon cars A Lotus Cortina cocking a wheel while cornering hard, an RS500 Sierra spitting flames on the overrun… these are just two iconic images from Ford’s involvement in saloon or touring car racing over the years. Ford’s run of success in saloon car racing started with a Zephyr MkII scoring points in its first race at Mallory Park in 1958 and winning the British Saloon Car Championship a year later. A variety of Ford models competed in saloon car race series across the globe over the years – Anglias, Cortinas, Galaxies, Escorts and Falcons in the 1960s, Capris in the 1970s, Sierras in the 1980 and 90s, Mondeos in the 2000s right through to the present day Focus. Le Mans 1966 proved to be a momentous year in sport for reasons other than football – it saw Ford take first, second and third at the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans race with GT40s. The GT40 would go on to win the next three Le Mans with legendary names such as Jacky Ickx, Chris Amon, Bruce McLaren, Jackie Oliver, Perdo Rodriguez, Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt behind the wheel. Bikers unite for Ride of Respect For a biker, there’s no greater rush of adrenaline than riding out with the pack – and, for Southampton bike enthusiasts, the next ride will be a special buzz. On Mother’s Day, about 18 bikers from Southampton were due to join up to 10,000 others taking part in the Ride of Respect through the Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett to pay tribute to the town, nearby RAF Lyneham and the armed forces – and to raise funds for serving and retired military personnel. Southampton’s John Palmer gets a huge kick out of riding out with some of the other 20-odd biking enthusiasts at the plant on their monthly summer gettogethers. So to ride with thousands from across the country at Wootton Bassett – the town made famous by the funeral parades of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan – is exciting. “You can’t understand it unless you’ve done it,” said John, who organises the Southampton rides. “It’s just such a great adrenaline rush. I love it when people look behind them and see us all coming towards them.” The Southampton bikers, who shy away from describing themselves as a club, don’t conform to the traditional blackleather, wild-child stereotype. In fact, their aim is to get out, visit the odd pub and enjoy the scenery. The Wootton Bassett Ride of Respect is slightly different as it is a fund-raising event on behalf of Afghan Heroes, a charity supporting military personnel and their families. Throughout the day, up to 10,000 bikers process through the town. Several of the Southampton bikers took part last year and are keen to go again. “We were looking for something to put our energies into and we thought it would be a good thing to do,” said Lee Havinga, who comes to work every day in Body in White on a Honda CB650. He went to Wootton Bassett last year with his 15-year-old son riding pillion – and they both loved it. “It’s good to get out as a group and do what you can for charity.” His colleague in Body in White, Glenn Hunt, was converted to bikes about four years ago when he decided to buy one to save money and petrol. “I thoroughly enjoy it now,” said Glenn, who rides a Kawasaki KLE 500. “I only put it away when it snows but otherwise I use it all the time. It’s a big part of our social life. John Palmer has been organising a regular programme of summer events for bikers at the plant for the past three years. The informal club has been a great leveller and people from all sections come along. John also brings his wife Jeanette, as pillion on his Triumph Legend 900 – and she is the only woman in the group. “The group wouldn’t have happened without John,” said Glenn. “He organises most of what we do. Every time you go out to the bike shed, John’s always there.” FN 21 Introducing a new family of New Fords In showrooms now. Take more than a test drive. Ford Privilege Body wax helps Martin raise £1,200 Retiree Ron Cummins marvels at the automation at the Southampton plant during his visit Retiree Ron goes back to the future It was 20 years since Ron Cummins stepped foot in the Southampton Assembly Plant and what he saw took his breath away. The automation, the high-tech wizardry, the cleanliness, it was all a world away from the plant where he worked for 38 years from 1953. “I didn’t recognise anything – things have changed so much,” said Ron, 80, after a recent visit to the plant. “I could just about work out which corner I worked in. When I saw the robots changing their own heads, it amazed me.” When Ron joined Ford in the 1950s, he earned seven pounds three shillings a week and worked a 48-hour week as standard, plus night shifts. He spent 21 years in production – mainly building the 508 lorry cab – followed by a brief spell in the paint shop. For the next 17 years he worked in maintenance, focusing on fork lifts. In fact, when he joined the factory in 1953, it was still Briggs Motor Bodies and he worked on the Rolls Royce aero engine exhaust unit. His equipment in body construction in those days consisted primarily of a jig and a spotweld gun – and, although towards the end of his time at Ford, there were “some robots in a big cage”, automation did not feature. During his recent tour, Ron was fascinated that robots can recognise a left- or right-hand side part, trimming down the margin of error to virtually zero. “It was possible to get the wrong part on the wrong side in my day, though I’m glad to say it didn’t happen very often.” One of his abiding memories was changing the 7,000 ceiling strip lights each year during shutdown, with his colleague Mike Mason, using a cherry-picker for the job. Another was the visit of Southampton Football Club when they won the FA Cup in 1976. Ron’s visit recently was the result of a conspiracy between his daughter Kim Sutton, and the plant’s training officer John Powell. Kim had noted her father’s curiosity about “what went on in the plant these days” and, unknown to Ron, put in a request for a visit on his behalf. “It seemed a small thing to ask, but he is a humble man who would not want to put people out,” says Kim. “It meant a great deal to him to revisit the place. He came home glowing about modern technology and the clean working environment. “He has always been grateful to Ford that it paid his wages, gave him a pension and where he made good friends. And my father’s hard work and loyalty to the Company helped us respect them as local employers.” Ron retired at Christmas in 1991 and, after moving to Dorset, spent a decade in Cyprus, from where he returned last Christmas. Though he was thrilled to visit the plant again, Ron recognises technology has overtaken him. So, when asked if he’d fancy a job with Ford now, he smiled and said: “I’m afraid I’m quite happy with my retirement, thank you very much.” A promise made at a charity dinner culminated in “the single most painful experience” in former arm wrestling champion Martin Cockburn’s 41 years. Martin, a precision grinder in Dagenham Engine Plant’s central maintenance, was attending the dinner for Essex charity Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Group (MSTG). The promise was made to Elaine Bosley, a nurse who has helped Martin’s mother Ellen since she was diagnosed with MS 14 years ago. Despite being nicknamed The Gorilla and Chewbacca by colleagues because he is so hirsute, Martin submitted to the hot wax treatment on his back, raising £1,200. The beautician described Martin as “the hairiest client she had ever seen”, and the process took 45 “very long” minutes. Former semi-professional arm wrestler Martin knows a thing or two about pain. Besides the exertions of the bouts themselves, he used to spend hours in the gym lifting up to 120kg in arm curls designed to maintain his upper body strength. “But I wasn’t prepared for how painful waxing was,” said Martin. “It was terrible, but nothing compared to what some MS sufferers have to endure. I wanted to do everything I could to support MSTG, which offers help and support to MS sufferers like my mum.” The charity offers exercise sessions and therapies to help patients maintain mobility. It also provides support and information, and the company which Martin is sure “offers a lifeline which keeps some patients going”. Family members have done sponsored walks and run marathons and Martin wants to focus on more unusual sponsored events. n If you have any fund-raising ideas, call Martin on 07833 954 770 or email Ian Frost on [email protected]. Ford gets in SYNC A look at the latest Ford technology for all of those readers who do not see @Ford, the Company’s pan-European magazine Ford customers in Britain will be among the first to benefit from the global launch of SYNC, the Company’s award-winning voice-control and connectivity technology, when it makes its European debut on the Focus in 2012. SYNC has been described by Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally as “a smarter, safer and simpler way to connect drivers with in-car technologies and their digital lives”. SYNC with the MyFord Touch interface makes vehicle functions, settings and information easily accessible to the driver through voice control, steering wheel controls or a simple tap of the centre stack touch screen. SYNC will give drivers access to one of the most advanced voice control and device connect technologies on the market with unrivalled connectivity and integration options. Ford anticipates that nearly two million new vehicles in Europe will feature the system by 2015. Powered by the Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive platform, SYNC has been designed to offer a smarter, simpler and safer means for drivers to operate mobile devices inside their cars. “SYNC’s unique connection between the 24 FordNews April 2011 driver’s devices and the vehicle means that the user’s voice can control both the car and the device,” said Jason Johnson, SYNC product development engineer. Key to SYNC is the voice command and control system developed in partnership with Nuance, the world’s leading provider of voice technology, which can recognise 10,000 commands in any one of 19 languages. Working with Nuance, Ford engineers have developed SYNC to be highly responsive to spoken commands, eliminating the need for multiple layers of command entry in many cases. For example, SYNC allows the driver to state aloud a full destination address without needing to prompt individually for city, postcode and street. It also allows voice operation of the climate control system, audio and entertainment functions, navigation and, crucially, devices linked to the car via Bluetooth or USB port. SYNC is able to connect to mobile phones via Bluetooth, offering a fully integrated handsfree, voice command and control that is safe and convenient. It offers far more than a basic level of phone integration however, being able to automatically transfer contact information and photos from the device phonebook to the vehicle. When connected to a compatible phone, SYNC can retrieve text messages and read them aloud, allowing a response to be sent using voice activation. Media can be acquired using built-in USB ports for devices such as MP3 players, an SDCard port and RCA inputs for audio and video. SYNC can also turn the car into a mobile WiFi hot spot. Offering a connection using a portable USB modem or Bluetooth-tethered compatible smartphone, SYNC can turn an incoming single point of internet connectivity into a WiFi broadcast inside the car for up to five passengers to connect their internet-powered devices. When SYNC combines with existing technologies including Lane Keeping Aid, Lane Keeping Alert, Driver Alert and Active City Stop presently available in the new Ford Focus, the result will be a level of driver assistance technology not offered by any other vehicle in the Focus’ segment or the one above. More than three million Ford vehicles in the US have been equipped with SYNC since late 2007. The WBS has been a regular visitor to the plant since it opened, and hundreds of employees have donated under the scheme, but bone marrow donors are very rare by comparison. In Wales as a whole, nearly 69,400 people donate blood but under 730 have been suitable bone marrow matches in 22 years. Jo Allen of the WBS said it appreciated the help given by Bridgend Engine Plant, particularly in finding bone marrow donors. “Those who can donate bone marrow really are a small percentage of the total who give blood so it’s very important we recruit as many people as possible into the scheme and Ford has been a tremendous help to us over the years,” she said. When someone requires a bone marrow Pictured at a previous blood donor session is Bridgend’s Lee Griffiths transplant, typically after invasive treatment, the most common route to getting it is through the patient’s closest family, but this is not always possible. Donors between 18 and 46 years give blood for about 10 minutes and get their samples analysed for type and also bone marrow. There is no additional test, and if a suitable bone marrow is discovered there are different ways to extract it. The most common method involves an overnight stay in a hospital unit, the marrow is extracted from the thigh in the morning and the donor goes home later that day, leaving with just a “dull ache” in their leg. The service is also using an alternative method where marrow is donated over a period of days in the donor’s home and a specialist nurse visits them to give them a special sort of transfusion in which some of the marrow is flushed out. This can leave donors with a sensation similar to aching joints or flu, although they are really healthy. Donors replace their own bone marrow within 10 days of giving. n The Welsh Blood Service visits Bridgend Engine Plant two or three times a year but anyone who wants to donate blood or bone marrow can get more information by calling 0800 252266. FN 25 All-round marathon effort It’s marathon time again, with the London marathon on 17 April and Edinburgh event on 22 May among the 26-milers that Ford people will be competing in Warley-based travel office administrator Neill Lockett will be running his first marathon. “It started out as one of those things to do in life, but since my mum Marlene died in October at the age of 57 it has become very personal to me,” said Neill. “Running on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support gives me the opportunity to run in memory of my mum and to give something back.” n Neill can be sponsoreded at www.justgiving.com/nlockett Football appeal The Ford Sunday Football League needs more teams if it is to continue to thrive; although two more clubs are likely to join for the 2011/2012 season, there is a possibility of some clubs leaving. The league currently has two divisions, each with seven teams, said secretary Derek Green. But it continues to contract, with four fewer teams today than in 2008. The first KO Cup final in the 1933-4 season was won by Miscellaneous Steel and that cup is still competed for, although it has now been renamed the Syd Morrell KO Cup in memory of the league’s chairman who died earlier this year. n For more details, contact Derek on [email protected] 26 FordNews April 2011 Senior financial analyst Graham Page is running in London for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. “It’s my first marathon, and I have not run much distance since I was at school, but it is something I have always wanted to do”, said Graham, who chose his charity because an old friend died of cystic fibrosis. “My priority is getting round, and enjoying the day,” he said. n You can support Graham at www.virginmoneygiving.com/ grahampage Dagenham HR welfare supervisor Clare O’Keeffe is competing in her fourth marathon, this time in Edinburgh. She has been training hard and hopes to finish in under four hours, having just failed to do so last year in London. Clare is running for Macmillan Cancer Support and hopes to raise at least £2,000. n Clare can be sponsoreded at www.justgiving.com/Clare-OKeeffe0 Warley senior plant protection guard Ian Barton is running in London for a second time, after completing it 13 years ago. “I had no real desire to do it ever again, but answered a call for help when someone pulled out,” said Ian. That call for help came from St Luke’s Hospice at Basildon, which Ian raised money for last year by walking across England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. n Ian can be sponsored at www. justgiving.com/Ian-Barton6 Beating the conditions Ford runners helped TriSport Epping triathlon club to victory in the final round of the South East Cross Country League run at Dunton. More than 200 runners from 10 clubs raced over a 4.5-mile course around the Dunton estate. “The day was very cold and damp, conditions were very muddy and the ground waterlogged,” said club secretary Simon Jolly, who works at Dunton. “The course even took the runners through a knee-deep stream, but everyone managed to make it.” TriSport Epping won the race and finished second overall in the league for the 2010/2011 season. The Ford runners who took part in the race, back row, from left: Mark Laing, Paul Gudgin, Alex Davis, Peter Brittle, Gary Paisley, Rob Fulbrook. Front row, from left: Ian Tinworth, Richard McHale, Stuart Paul, Kevin Smith, Simon Jolly Stepping out for charity Walkers in Bridgend Engine Plant have been putting their best feet forward for charity. The group has raised over £2,100 for Macmillan Cancer and the British Heart Foundation with treks around South Wales and Lakeland beauty spots and is planning another fund raising walk later this year. Founder member Jeff Rees said: “We meet up once or twice a month for a range of walks in Wales or further afield and usually about 20-25 of us take part. “We took the decision to open up the club to former employees and people who do not work at BEP and this has seen membership jump, which means we ultimately raise more for charity.” He said the club was open to people with various levels of fitness or experience as they all encouraged one another. Partners and families are encouraged to take part and the club is always willing to consider new charitable causes to assist. Jeff added: “We will be having our annual general meeting in a few weeks when we will pull together a programme for the next 12 months and we are always looking for more people to join.” BEP Walking Club members enjoy the high life on the edge of the Brecon Beacons Eduardo is in pole position Dunton’s Eduardo Correia Sports car mad Eduardo Correia is realising one of his dreams this year after winning a coveted place in a Mazda MX5 racing team. Eduardo, 30, is a specialist exhaust after-treatment engineer in Dunton and has worked for Ford since 2008. In January he beat off the competition from 70 other racing wannabes in a series of test races over two days at Silverstone. His £25,000 prize is a racing season as a driver in the five-man Blendini team, which has won the Ma5da Racing Championship two out of the last three seasons. Eduardo’s race entry fees, tyres and race fuel will be paid for, with mechanical support and that allimportant competitive Mazda race car provided. Even so, as Eduardo found on his first test day in March, motor racing is an expensive pastime. Even though Blendini paid some of the test day fees, with fuel costing £1.50 a litre the day cost him £350. Eduardo is looking forward to the season’s 20 races spread over nine weekends which go on until September. He said: “I am over the moon. I am also looking forward to getting my custom-painted helmet – in yellow, green and red, like my racing hero Ayrton Senna’s. “My parents are coming over from Portugal to watch the first race at Silverstone. Several friends will be there too, and I hope that some of my Ford colleagues will come along to support me as well.” That would be only fair, as it was a driving day in Ford cars (Fiesta ST, Focus ST and Mondeo ST) in 2006 that sparked off his interest in track racing. Before that he had only tried karting in his native Portugal in his early 20s. “I love the feeling of driving on a race track, feeling the speed and make it as precise, consistent and fast as possible. It is a good sensation to brake at just the right point, turn in where you should, hit the apex, and exit the corner as fast as possible! “It is a sport that takes a huge amount of skill, technique and concentration – and I hope to improve all that during my racing season.” n For more information see www.blendini-motorsport.com FN 27 A feast of old Fords The Ford Y & C Model Register is organising the annual Old Ford Rally at the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire on 24 July, where hundreds of cars are expected to be on show - possibly the largest range of classic Fords assembled in one place in the year. Everything from Model Ts through the cars of the pre-war austerity years, agricultural and military vehicles, and on to the more luxurious post-war Zodiacs, Capris and Granadas will be invited to show alongside Ford commercial vehicles from the past. They will be joined by cars representing every decade from the Ford heritage collection to celebrate Ford’s UK centenary, and there will be an opportunity for visitors to ride in an enthusiast-owned old Ford in return for a charity donation. “This will not only raise money for a good cause but also give a superb opportunity to experience a flavour of motoring in the past,” said organiser Bob Wilkinson. “Maybe this is where we encourage the next generation of enthusiasts. A range of old Ford cars will be available from participating clubs.” “Indoor facilities such as Gaydon’s film theatre will provide visitors with footage of thrills and spills over the years. “Gaydon offers a splendid museum for the Above: Ford V8s at the 2010 show. Left: A 1936 V8 Woodie which won car of the show last year whole family. The outdoor arena will hold parades of some of the best Fords in the country and hard standing areas ensure that the show will go on whatever the weather,” said Bob n Exhibitor entries and all ticket enquiries should be made to HMC Gaydon on 01926 645031. Application forms can be obtained from www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk n General enquiries to Bob Wilkinson, [email protected] (01832 734463). Date announced for Warley Vehicle Enthusiasts’ Day World Cup-winning Escort was on show last year at Warley 28 FordNews April 2011 The sixth Vehicle Enthusiasts’ Day organised by Ford News will be held at Warley on Friday, 22 July. If you own a vehicle of historical interest or significance, or a classic, unusual or unique vehicle, and would like to bring it along to this year’s show, then please register your interest by emailing [email protected] and we will send you joining instructions. We would particularly like to see some motorcycles this year, and we are already hopeful of a 1936 Sunbeam and probably a 1998 Harley Davidson. Interesting ex-military vehicles would be very welcome, such as the 1945 Ford Jeep that Ian Giblin exhibited last year. The 40 vehicles on show in 2010 ranged from a 1928 Bentley to a 2009 Focus RS.
