Announcement First IAEA Technical Meeting on Divertor Concepts 29 September – 2 October 2015 IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria INTRODUCTION The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will organize the first Technical Meeting on Divertor Concepts from 29 September to 2 October 2015 at the IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria. OBJECTIVE The objective of the meeting is to provide a forum for discussing open physics and technology issues associated with conventional and alternative divertors as complete concepts for controlling plasma-wall interaction while providing optimal conditions for core fusion performance. The meeting will aim at fostering, in particular, discussions of the state of the art and solutions for different power exhaust problems. TOPICS The meeting will cover the following topics: 1. Approaches to open issues in divertors (detachment, confinement performance, compatibility with 3D fields) - OID 2. Steady state and transient constraints (component cooling, armor lifetime, material migration, detachment stability - or robustness -, radiative dissipation, control diagnostics, etc.) - SST 3. Alternative concepts for next step fusion devices: new designs and technologies ACS MEETING FORMAT The meeting will have invited and contributed oral papers presented in sessions devoted to special topics with subsequent discussions. It is expected that invited talks, as keynotes for the sessions, will be 40 minutes plus 10 minutes discussion and session talks will be ~20 minutes with ~5 minutes for discussion. An electronic projector connected to a computer capable of reading CDs and memory sticks will be available for the presentations (Power Point recommended). It is expected that the meeting will start at 9:00 on 29 September 2015 and end by 17:00 on 2 October 2015. A summary session will provide the possibility to review the progress reported at the meeting and recommend directions for future research. Language The working language of the meeting is English; no interpretation will be provided. Participation About 60 experts from IAEA Member States and International Organizations are expected to attend the meeting. Participants should be actively involved in the topics of the meeting. Participants will be accepted only if their duly completed Participation Form (Form A) is transmitted to the IAEA through their appropriate governmental authority by 17 July 2015. ABSTRACT Participants wishing to make a contribution at the meeting are requested to submit a one-page electronic abstract. Abstracts should be submitted to the email address [email protected] by 30 June 2015. Abstracts should be prepared according to the following instructions: 1) Page size: A4 (297mm by 210 mm) – vertical orientation 2) Margins 25mm all around 3) Layout: Title: single-spaced, 14-point size, Times New Roman Font (TNR), bold Authors: single-spaced, 12-point size, TNR Font Affiliation: single-spaced, 12-point size, TNR Font, italic Text: 1.5 spaced, 12-point size, TNR Font Length: one page Abstracts can be text only or contain figures and graphics. The abstracts must contain the authors’ names, affiliation and email address. Acceptable file formats are Microsoft Word (preferred) or PDF. The filename should be in the following format: "lastname.i.n.i.t.i.a.l.s.acronym of the topic.filetype". Authors must make sure that the files do not include copyrighted fonts or any other impediments for reproduction. The abstracts will be reviewed and selected by the International Programme Advisory Committee. Authors will be informed of the acceptance of their contributions via email by 27 July 2015. A Book of Abstracts will be compiled for distribution during the meeting. PAPERS Manuscripts should be prepared for inclusion in the meeting proceedings published by the IAEA (it will be available on the web and will include presentations as well). If agreed, a summary report of the meeting will be prepared by the International Programme Advisory Committee, coordinated by its chair, for submission to the “Nuclear Fusion” journal. MEETING LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION The meeting will take place in M2 meeting room, M Building at the Vienna International Centre. Detailed information regarding accommodation and transportation in Vienna can be found under the following link http://www-pub.iaea.org/iaeameetings/2015HotelList.pdf. EXPENDITURES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT The costs for the organization of the meeting are borne by the IAEA. No registration fee will be charged to participants. As a general rule, the IAEA does not pay travel and accommodation expenses for meeting participants. However, limited funds are available to help meet the cost of attendance of a few selected specialists, primarily those from developing countries with low economic resources. Generally, not more than one grant will be awarded to any one country. The grants awarded will be in the form of lump sums usually covering part of the cost of attendance. Governments wishing to apply for a grant on behalf of one of their specialists should address specific requests to the Scientific Secretary responsible for this meeting to this effect. Governments should ensure that applications for grants are: 1) received by the IAEA by 17 July 2015, 2) accompanied by a duly completed and signed Grant Form C including the abstract of the paper to be presented, 3) should include an estimate from an official travel agency of the travel cost. Applications that do not comply with the conditions mentioned above will not be considered. Awards will be announced by 27 July 2015. VISAS Participants who require a visa to enter Austria should submit the necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of Austria as soon as possible. An official letter of invitation will be issued to all participants. This letter will be needed for the visa application. In case of special requirements, please contact Ms Lilla HÉDERVÁRI ([email protected]). DEADLINES 30 June 2015 Deadline for submission of abstracts according to the instructions above for paper selection 17 July 2015 Deadline for submission of the Participation Form through the appropriate governmental authority. 17 July 2015 Deadline for request to the IAEA for financial support 27 July 2015 Participants will be informed about the acceptance of their papers. 27 July 2015 Grant awards 29 Sept. 2015 Meeting begins - please bring an electronic copy (word or pdf file) of your paper to be collected by the IAEA Scientific Secretary.
