Welcome back from Spring Break! We are now in the home stretch with our last school day scheduled for Wednesday, June 24. Please note that June 24 will be an early release day. As many of you know, during Spring Break I traveled to China to set up sister schools for Eliot. I established one sister school in Beijing and a second in Ningbo, which is a city located south of Beijing. By having these sister schools, we will be able to pursue exchange programs for both students and teachers! The goal for our students is to have them travel with me to China, stay with Chinese families, and attend one of our sister schools. This arrangement will mirror our current exchange program where students from China stay with Needham families and attend Needham Public Schools. We will pursue opportunities for our teachers to travel to China, too, so they have the opportunity to teach Chinese students. In addition, we will invite teachers from China to come and teach classes at Eliot. It is my belief that this exchange program will benefit all those involved as we experience another culture and truly participate in a global initiative. During the visit, I toured many primary, middle and high schools. I observed the similarities and differences between the schools in China and our own. The primary schools (which we call elementary schools) consisted of grades 1-6 with kindergarten students housed in a separate building. Their schools were significantly different in terms of physical size, the student population, the length of the school day, and the teaching style. The size of the schools rivaled any professional office building. The average student population of each school exceeded 1,000 students, with about 37 students per class. Consequently, the teaching style consisted of students sitting in rows with teachers delivering lessons as lectures. The average school day ran from 8:00am to 4:00pm, and this longer day permitted students to participate in such after school activities as art, dance, band, and various athletic programs. Students chose their after school activities and rotated these activities throughout the year. In terms of similarities with our western teaching style, students were actively engaged and allowed to work together in cooperative groups during their art, music, and athletic classes. Other highlights of my trip included taking the Bullet Train from Ningbo to Shanghai and visiting the Great Wall. Overall, this trip was very informative and exposed me to the rich and proud culture of the Chinese people. The food was delicious and the people were extremely friendly and generous with their time. I can’t wait to return and continue to learn about Chinese culture. Attached are pictures from the trip. I will be hosting another coffee talk on Wednesday May 20, 8:00-10:00 AM. Please come out and have a conversation with me! Have a great weekend. Sincerely, Roderick MacNeal, Jr. Principal PHOTOS FROM CHINA Mr. MacNeal with an Eliot bag at the GREAT WALL. More photos from China, will be published in our next bulletin.
