Snap-on & Gateway Partnership
NC3 Certification Opportunities:
Industry Partnerships Leading To Industry
Credentials
• Around 2006 Gateway & Snap-on began
discussing a partnership model centered on
automotive diagnostics.
• Snap-on identified a skills gap: Auto
Technicians used at best 20-25% of their
advanced diagnostic tools’ features and
capabilities.
• Could this be increased to 70% or more?

Partnership Evolution: NC3
NC3 is . . .
• After the Horizon Center opening other colleges
and businesses began to look at this partnership
model.
• Increased interest required a separate
organization to spearhead the expansion and
facilitate future partnerships with new schools
and businesses.
A network of education providers and corporations that
supports, advances and validates
new and emerging technology skills
in the transportation, aviation and energy industries.
• In 2010 the National Coalition of Certification
Centers or NC3 was established. Non profit
separate company.

What NC3 Certification is NOT . . .
• NC3 Certification is NOT:
– A Snap-on or Trane exclusive school (the
certification equipment is Snap-on and Trane,
everything else is school choice).
– Require a continuous investment in new
equipment (one time minimum purchase, to
certify unlimited number of students)
– A stand alone curriculum that replaces current
classes (specific equipment knowledge
currently taught, but now can be done at a
deeper level and with a certification
opportunity at the end.
What NC3 Certification Costs . .
• NC3 Certification Costs:
– Certification Equipment (your choice): One
Time upfront purchase
– Example Multimeter Certification Kit:
• 20-Multimeters & Leads, 20-Signal Boards, 1Wrapped and Foamed Toolbox, Curriculum & Exam

Questions?
FAQ’s and Common Concerns
• Does the school have to use only/all Snap-on tools

• Next Up: FAQ’s and Common Concerns.
or Trane equiptment?
• Answer: No, only the equipment they wish to
certify students on needs to be from the partner
company.
• Does it hurt the student’s career aspects to learn
on only Snap-on or Trane equipment?
• “Tools & Equipment” have to be taught either way,
Traditionally taught in broad terms with little
depth of knowledge. New model: deeper
knowledge is easily transferable to other brands
and platforms.
FAQ’s and Common Concerns
FAQ’s and Common Concerns
• Does it hurt the student’s career aspects to learn
• Does this program aim to help students &
• Helps standardize the classroom; efficiency, greater
mastery of skills
• Snap-on: Frost & Sullivan (Market Research)
Normally report a 60-70% market share for Snap-on
in diagnostics. Odds are: of 10 shops 6-7 will have
some Snap-on equipment.
• Trane is a global leader in HVAC.
• Snap-on has been in business for over 90 years,
Trane over 100: Solid companies to build skills
around
• Answer:
on only Snap-on or Trane equipment?
Instructors or is it just more ROI for Snap-on?
– They do make money on the equipment sold to schools,
but NC3 is the lowest pricing they offer (lowest margin)
– They donate $100,000-150,000 PER YEAR, to NC3 to run
the testing site and support schools and instructors. NO
ADDITIONAL COST TO SCHOOLS TO ISSUE CERTIFICATIONS
(unlimited in number).
– They pay for the curriculum to be developed, reviewed, and
then authored into workbook/instructor guide form

• Answer:
• Answer:
Instructors or is it just more ROI for Snap-on?
– They provide diagnostic schools with YEARLY FREE software
updates for all the tools they use in certification
– NC3 price for ShopKey5 & Pro includes 100 seats, so it can
be shared with local high schools.
Instructors or is it just more ROI for Snap-on?
– They support and sponsor NC3 Train-the-Trainer events
for instructors, but all proceeds go to NC3, not Snap-on.
– Separate from NC3, Snap-on is a supporter of WATDA
Scholarships, Skills-USA, and other educational endeavors
– Snap-on provides free architectural consulting for
shop design and remodels
– Provides 4 full time people that travel to schools to
advise and work with administration, faculty, and
other potential industry partners when requested
– Any significant ROI might come years later with the hope
that students who learn on Snap-on tools, will eventually
buy Snap-on tools. Same could be said for any school
vendor, not just in transportation (AutoCAD, Solid Works,
other software and hardware used in schools).

Questions?
–
• Does the curriculum fit within NATEF standards?
• Answer: Yes, there are NATEF standards requiring
students to use and learn about tools and
equipment such as multimeters, scan tools, lab
scopes, wheel service equipment, etc.
• These certification “modules” are able to integrated
into current course offerings and curriculum. We
sometimes refer to them “courses,” but they are
more like individual “units.”

• To increase employability students need:
– Theory & Skills (Automotive Degree)
– Industry Driven Certifications (bridge over
lack of experience – NC3 Certifications
through Snap-on)
– Tools (technicians must bring their own tools
to the job – NC3/Snap-on Partnership)

Increase the Graduation Rate
• The combination of earning tools and
stackable industry credentials allow the
students to “see” what they are
accomplishing.
Increase the Graduation Rate
• The Associate degree is motivation for
some, but many of today’s students
need shorter term objectives to serve as
benchmarks that keep them focused on
their longer term goals such as
graduation.
• NC3 Certification program provides
these benchmarks and incentives
