Exotic phases and strain in model perovskite under pressure. P.Bouvier1*, M. Guennou2, J. Kreisel2 1 2 Institut Néel, CNRS/UJF UPR2940, 25 rue des Martyrs BP166, Grenoble, 38042 France Materials Research and Technology Department, 41 rue du Brill, 4422 Belvaux, Luxembourg *e-mail: [email protected] Over the past 10 years, many efforts have been devoted to the (re-)examination of structural distortions in perovskites under high-pressure in order to identify general rules for their evolutions and interactions with reducing volume. I will present structural characterization of various model perovskites such as PbTiO3 [1,2], SrTiO3[3,4] and the multiferroic BiFeO3[5,6]. Thought those example, I will show that the use of single crystal x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy allows precise determination of symmetry adapted strains and order parameters and will discuss the appearance of either new kinds of large cells structures or the unusual emergence of a polar phase at high pressure. 1. Master in Material Science at INP-Grenoble in 2000. Post-doc in 2001 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF Grenoble) on the id27 high-pressure beamline. Joined French CNRS in 2002 to develop high-pressure studies on functional oxydes. Interested in crystallographic aspects and in the detailed knowledge of atomic-scale structural change (order parameters, strains) to understand the mechanism of phase transitions in solids. Mainly interested in oxides such as ABO3 perovskites and multiferroics where competitions of different instabilities (tilt, polar displacements, Jahn-Teller) are observed under high-pressure. Has skills in Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction on powder and single crystals using Synchrotron radiation, High-hydrostatic pressure in Diamond anvil cells.
