It includes cost paid by the employer to cover active employees, costs for spouses and dependent children, costs for behavioral health and prescription drug coverage and employer contributions made to HSAs and HRAs. It does not include dental or vision coverage costs, nor the costs for retirees and surviving spouses, nor employee contributions made to HSAs. Company ABC's costs are above both the industry and EMPAQ Total median and your average costs are above the EMPAQ average. Initial steps in determining the reason for these differences include: Benchmarking your employee cost sharing and the scope of covered benefits against industry standards Evaluating whether or not the average family size is above average; consider a spousal surcharge to encourage the usage of the spouse’s own benefit option Examining more closely your spending for specialty drugs. This is an area of rapidly increasing costs that has attracted attention as a place where savings can be realized by coordinating specialty pharmacy benefit management and benefits design.
